A Super Typhoon has swept through the Philippines which is to beleived to have killed over 1000 people on one town. Looking at the pictures it looks like a war zone and i'm amazed that anyone has survived.

A couple of friends of mine landed in Saigon, Veitnam, yesterday and they even felt the impact of the storm there.

It'S down to only 100MPH now - even that is probably stronger than what most parts of Britain experienced back in 1987

A very sad situation and as far as I'm concerned we should be concentrating our foreign aid on natural disasters like this and not on paying out money to countries engaged in non essential space programmes Sad

I've read that some south coast areas / Isle of Wight did suffer 100+mph winds in the October 1987 storm (the yard-stick with which the media have measured every subsequent storm to cross the uk since then) I believe this may also have happened in the one that the media have forgotten about that was almost as bad as Oct 1987, that was the 'Burns day' storm of January 1990. It was probably worse than 1987 in one respect in that it struck in the daytime hours when many more people (myself included, so I'll never forget it!) were around. The 1987 one (like the 'St Jude' one of a couple of weeks ago) hit in the small hours.

I remember that morning. Paul McKenna was doing the Chiltern Radio breakfast show from their Dunstable studios andnothing was working properly. The turntables, cart machines and tape machines were all suffering from fluctuating power supplies - how the hell he held it together is anybody's guess, but he did!

Very amusing. That was before his Capital Radio and short-lived Radio One career, btw.
