Had the misfortune to tune into 45 mins of the SW show earlier this week-sadly just a throw back to 10 years ago-nothing seems to have changed at all. Had to switch to another station after a while as SW just talks and talks over all the music-a really annoying habit.

How much longer can this dross of a format continue to be broadcast.

SW needs to be retired and someone fresh with a new format for the 3 hrs needs to be brought in without all the hangers on etc and who has some kind of respect for the music played.

What do others think.

I agree 100%. I listened to about 20 minutes while in the car earlier. The samey, tired format led me to plug my iphone in and I listened to Radio Caroline on 3G. At least those guys put the music first!

I agree with you Mark

What on earth is all this 'hands up' silly stuff about and why does SW insist on reading out news items we've just heard about shortly before his show starts Confused

We are bombarded by his obsessive stuff about 'One Direction' and other reality TV non entities and the only bit of the show worth listening to is the Non Stop Oldies - by the way which were absolutely superb today Very Happy

I'd far rather see Richard Allinson on in the afternoon slot or even Chris Tarrant: both of whom bring something far more interesting to Radio 2 in 2013 Smile

'A throw back to ten years ago'? Er, how about 30 years ago. The guy's completely stuck in the 80s. What really annoys me, and it's only a minor point, is that he feels he has to repeat several times the name and home town of whoever chooses the oldies. 'Today's oldies are chosen by Joe Bloggs from London'--repeat several times. He certainly loves the sound of his own voice, and talks far too much over the songs, even worse than Gingerknob.

And what he does say is just vacuous rubbish, the intellectual level of his questions to his guests rarely ascending above 'what's your favourite colour?' He's a complete halfwit.

(Eat humble pie time: I have to admit that his music at times is pretty good, certainly when compared to the pop disco rubbish that Ken Bruce has to play).

I've noticed lately that he likes to sing (wail, even) over music. It's rare that I can tolerate him for long. Trouble is that, OneD apart, the music can be quite good.

I can't count the number of times I've thought the same about the news that has been on literally less than 10 minutes earlier. Rolling Eyes The 'hands up' is just stupid.

He was one of the reasons I stopped listening to Radio 1 back in the early 80s, having done a shift at the airport starting at 6 am I couldn't turn him off fast enough on my drive home.

Yes a tired old format...but DJs joining Radio2 eg Evans, Ball, Whiley don't give me much hope for the future with the tired old R1 format, and others like Winkelmann, Feltz don't get me listening Rolling Eyes

I drove down to London and listened to him for 30 mins and he sang over records twice. No self respecting dj does that the format is old hat and the false laughter did my head in.Radio 2 is pap during the day and the only time i tune in is overnights

Nice to see the return of Lynn Parsons standing in for Janey Lee Grace on the show today

Let's hope it's the first step in getting this excellent presenter back as a regular on Radio 2 - I thought that today she was far more bubbly and amusing than previously on the network - seems like her own personality and sense of humour previously only experienced on Smooth has finally made the transition to the BBC Very Happy

Yes, I agree that Lynn Parsons is a good but seemingly undervalued presenter. I did hear her a few times on Smooth recently and I thought she sounded like she was trying to run a studio desk and talk at the same time while in a straitjacket - but that's down to the format and the appalling playlist.

I think she'd do very well in the afternoon "Big Show" slot actually. I'd go to the effort of actually tuning in - which is something I don't do now.

Happened to tune in to this show today and I was transported back 10 or 20 years, and not in a good way. The style, the music and the content was dire.

I know I only caught 10 minutes or so, and it's not a presenter I would intentionally listen to, but as a prime time representation of Radio2 product it is not long for this world.

How do you know 'it's not long for this world'?

I heard a bit (around the time Neil Sedaka was one of the guests) and it wasn't that bad. I don't listen that often or for very long periods but there are shows that are far, far worse.

The format is very tired the show is irritatingly repetitive and the guests are generally boring and only there to sell us their latest products

Whilst it's not the worst show on the network I'm firmly of the view that it's time for a change Smile

I agree. It's a heavily-edited and pre-packaged show, too, which annoys the hell out of me. I don't listen very often - and when I do it's by accident!

I think my use of the phrase 'not long for this world' is a case of wishful thinking!

You're right, it is far from the worst show on R2, but that's a pretty damning indictment of the majority of shows now put before us in the name of entertainment. I'm afraid that the Big Show doesn't generate hugely strong feelings in me one way or the other, it simply leaves me indifferent, and I can happily live without it.

About the only daytime show where I like nearly all of the music (apart from the enforced playlist drivel).

I always like the music that SW plays, lots of oldies that you don't often hear. Certainly better than the drivel Ken Bruce has to play.

The trouble is that you have to put up with his drivel in between!!

Agreed, Colin, in fact not just between records but all over them. He talks over songs and is far worse in that respect than a certain breakfast presenter whose name I can't remember.

For some time now, R&M have been my favourite show on any station.

Only gripe is how often one of them is away..... the show is best when both are in it!

If some of you are members of the SOTS Facebook, there's a thread started by one Adge Mason which is reminiscent of the rants some of us used to post, on the old BBC messageboards, about Steve Wright....

There's over 20 replies on the thread, no familiar names there. Most dislike Wright and Evans, prefer when they have stand-ins, they like Alex and Ken.

SOTS Facebook is quite a good read sometimes though it's mainly a weekly thread after each SOTS show.

I alerted them to the 'Cilla' ITV drama and another thread started after Episode 1.

Listening to Hazel O'Connor's Will You on Steve's programme, this afternoon, got me wondering...are there many songs that have such long instrumental endings as this one?

He's a bit of an imbecile of course and doesn't have to be drunk to say something inane, but I have to say I always like the music he plays.

What really annoys me at the moment is Ken Bruce's nonstop playing of Christmas songs. It's not Christmas yet, but despite that he played three in a row yesterday. And why play Chris Rea's 'Driving Home For Christmas' on December 7? Who the hell drives home for Christmas on December 7?

I don't mind the Christmas songs. There's so much going on in the world, so much misery and so much to keep track of, that I can't begrudge a bit of early Christmas cheer.

Was stuck in several traffic jams yesterday and I've got to say I enjoyed Steve yesterday and the Christmas music.

I was able to switch off from worries a bit too. Hope things improve for you Angela.

I would rather that Christmas songs were left up to the week before Christmas to get the true Christmassy feeling but Christmas these days seems to start in November,in some regards, and there doesn't seem to be much we can do about it...it's all around us!

I agree completely Becky. Early December is far too early to play Xmas songs. From mid December, fine, but Ken Bruce has been droning on about Christmas since August.

That said, I do actually like most of the seasonal songs played.

For me it's been wonderful to have Gary Davies back on the network on afternoons this week

I'm truly amazed he's been away for so long although I know he did recently stand in for Sara Cox on her Friday night show

He made the point of mentioning that the BBC had given him his own e mail address - perhaps that's his way of telling us that he's here to stay - I really hope so Very Happy

Yeah, it's great. But I can only assume Ore Oduba was too busy on his 27 other shows to stand in this week.

Yes I wondered whether it was the same Gary Davies as the one who was on Radio 1/2 back in the 80s. He seems ok, if a little obsessed with the 80s.
I suspect he is living in the past, just like the usual moronic presenter.
