I don't know why I'm listening to this, but.........

JV is discussing wind energy with an industry expert who is discussing the UK's role in developing seaborne windfarms. In addition to calling the turbines "windmills", JV is asking the most ridiculous questions, such as "How much would my energy bill be if all our power was generated by windfarms?" to which the hapless interviewee replied "Well obviously I can't do that calculation for you". Of course he can't, that's not what he was invited to discuss and he doesn't have any idea of JV's family consumption anyhow! How absurd.

Jeremy Vine is looking sillier and sillier each day. Time to switch to something else!

And now he's broken off the discussion to cue a track by........... you've guessed it........ One Direction

Bye Jeremy.

It was really bad - forget Nigella Lawson - I'm beginning to think Mr Vine is partaking of some kind of alien substance

His brain seems completely to have ceased functioning Shocked

Agree with comments above.
I noticed recently that even the in-person trailer for JV's programme on the Ken Bruce show was undermined by JV's very obvious lack of understanding of the issue he was intending to discuss (I think it was smoking outside hospitals). Ken made a quick pertinent point that went sailing straight past JV - I suppose in that sense it was an accurate foretaste of what was to follow.
I like JV, but is he too distracted with other things?

Well yet another incredible example today when he played Lily Allen's cover version of 'Somewhere Only We Know' and had to debate with the listeners whether Keane did the original

Hells teeth - he's a presenter on the country's most listened to music station where almost every track from the album 'Hopes and Fears' was played to death by R2 for months and months - so how can he possibly not be sure about that Rolling Eyes

Even the worst contestant on Popmaster would surely know such a basic fact

I'm getting more and more annoyed with this silly man and wish we could have Paddy taking over the show permanently Mad

I don't dislike JV but he often says the most inane things to either guests or callers, that can be completely embarrassing.
Did anyone hear the subject for discussion yesterday?
It was (prepare yourselves) "Have you ever been injured by somebody with a really strong handshake"
For pity's sake is this what the great Jimmy Young's show has been reduced to?

My thoughts entirely, Gaz. Although the "JY" show was a bit too old for me and therefore I listened rarely, when I did listen I was always impressed by the gracious and modest way he ran the show and conducted his chats with guests. Margaret Thatcher (much as I hated everything she stood for) did say that he was by far her favourite radio interviewer simply because he listened. You can't say say fairer than that!

Vine take note....... not that he will.

You should have listened more Colin, it was the first show I listened to on Radio 2 by my own choice, and I was still in my late 20s, around 1980. In many ways it was an education which is now lacking in JV's show. Not always his fault as it's not his choice what comes up and the news in general has been so dumbed down, even from when JV took over.

Oh for the days of the Legal Eagle and the Legal Beagle, the food man, the vet and the antiques dealer!

I probably would have done, Helen, but with daytime work commitments as they were it wasn't easy. I was still into Radio One and Capital Radio back in the 80s and 90s (and the latter only when I was on the road in and around London) so I didn't have the chance to tune in regularly. Today it's different because my feet are pretty on the ground in my own business space and I usually have the DAB on or my iPhone docked into it for streaming.

I'm definitely with you on that one. JY's "pr o g" (hmm, the profanity filter here won't let me enter those four letters together!) definitely did educate as well as inform and entertain as the BBC's Charter requires the Corporation to do and JY's show achieved that well. I did used to get a bit fed up with his choices of music - but that was down to me rather than him!!!

I couldn't agree more. Wasn't the Legal Eagle the bloke who is now Lord Philips? He was on Radio 4's "You and Yours" consumer programme the other day. He was an excellent regular guest with whom JY had a good rapport. I too loved the very jolly food man as well as the antiques dealer.

As for the JV equivalents, I note that Terry the Allotment Man hasn't been around for a while (he is being treated for cancer?) and of course Martin Ct-on-hot bricks Lewis doesn't have a regular feature now that he sold his Moneysavingexpert.com for a fortune!

PS: Two jingles that stick out from the 70s: "What's The Recipe Today Jim?", which used a speeded-up recording to sound like chipmunks. I copied this technique as a student and had great fun with rude words! The other was the song "Keep young and beautiful" as the intro to the women's health feature. My mum used to sing that all the time - drove me barmy! Smile

Terry Walton was on today but only very briefly as a result of the over saturated coverage of the Mandela death Sad

I enjoy his slots and also Sarah Jarvis but it's sad that we no longer hear from Martyn Lewis on a regular basis Sad

Terry was on today Colin, just briefly as it's not really growing season. He is I think 'over' his prostate cancer after treatment. I owe him an email so I'll find out more.

Yes Eagle is now Lord Philips, not on very much now though. The Beagle was Bill Thomas who now lives in France and phoned the show a few times a few years ago. A friend of ours who is a solicitor met him once.

Must admit JY's music wasn't too good at times but it was the topic content that held my attention.

I flicked over from R1 to R2 one day when off with flu and Steve Wright and Co were getting a wee bit on my nerves and to my surprise found I really enjoyed the JY show. I worked shifts at the time so unless I was on a very early shift could listen most days.

Didn't Jeremy used to have a poet on in the early days of his show, who used to compose something from that days topics? What has become of her?

I used to love the legal eagle, beagle and the food guy too.
His name was Tony De Angeli and he also had a great rapport with Jimmy.
I can't remember exactly but was the antiques guy, Eric Knowles from Antiques Roadshow?
