Annie Nightingale and Jon Holmes are back on BBC Radio 2 next month as part of the Christmas schedule, just announced.

Jon – now hosting the daily breakfast show on Global’s Xfm – will again partner with comedienne Miranda Hart to cover for Steve Wright, while Annie hosts a show on the evening of New Year’s Day, taking listeners on a journey through seven decades of music from the 1950s to 2014.

Robbie Williams makes his presenting debut on Radio 2, covering for Dermot O’Leary on Saturday 21st December, and there’s a festive Sounds Of The 20th Century spin-off on 23rd December, featuring two hours of Christmas music and news from the season between 1951 and 2000.

French and Saunders are back as well – doing the lunchtime slot on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. On Boxing Day, they’ll be preceded by Dame Edna Everage.

Lewis Carnie, Head of Programmes for Radio 2, says: “BBC Radio 2 this Christmas features a dazzling array of some of the biggest stars you’ll find anywhere this festive season. It’s a feast of fantastic programmes presented by a star-studded line-up including Robbie Williams, Glee’s Matthew Morrison, Australian super-star Dame Edna Everage, comedy legends French & Saunders, Hollywood actor Michael Sheen and a whole host of others. They will be the perfect accompaniment to the nation’s celebrations.”

It all looks to be highly avoidable - so I'll do just that!

It gets worse every year.

No doubt there will be a few gems tucked away, so a detailed perusal of RT when it comes out will be required!

One of the regular presenters on Radio Caroline today (one who plays a mix of music you never hear on drab Radio 2) refused to mention the "c" word until Christmas eve. That's my kind of radio! (meanwhile, goodbye Radio 2)

I hope you are right H, BBC's press releases usually omit what I'm really interested in. I'm just an old fogey who wants a bit of Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers Smile and of course they will likely be on Sky Arts or TCM.

I'd say most aren't, but it doesn't bother me either.

Ed Stewart's Christmas morning programme was last year but not sure of others he has done.

I vaguely remember someone I know getting a mention on I think a Christmas afternoon programme, but that was a few years ago.

Well I for one prefer live broadcasts to remain the norm, unless there's a decent reason for pre-records.
Celebs fancying the idea of having a radio show, but not the inconvenience of turning up for live broadcasts, is not a good reason.

Now I've written that, I'm wondering just how bad some of these shows might be if they were forced to do them live. Maybe I'm changing my mind!

Despite my inference above, I don't actually mind whether a show is pre-recorded or not (after all, a lot of night-time and weekend shows are routinely recorded and it makes no difference), but what I was getting at was that the shows that feature the "Christmas special guest presenters" just sound so canned and contrived.

I'd much rather that lesser-known presenters (ones who actually do know and love real music) were given slots as a means of introducing them to a national audience. I can't see it happening though because the theory is that the celebrity "names" pull in the listeners - especially if they're excessively-trailed as usual on R2.

I agree Colin - they should give some of the better presenters on BBC Local Radio stations a chance - I'm sure they would jump at such an opportunity even if it did mean working over the Christmas period - and we might just uncover a proper knowledgeable music lover - for the time after Mr Shennan hangs up his boots Smile

This Christmas, I will be mostly watching telly...what have we done to deserve French and Saunders? I'm amazed that Homeland haven't written them into a plot involving torture of Iraqis.

Most Iraqis are decent, hardworking individuals, and to even suggest inflicting the witless French and Saunders on them is cruelty beyond belief.

Good point, Schizzo. They can torture Nasser Hussain instead..for the sole reason, that I can't think of an equally witty reply.

Johnnie Walker meets Fleetwood Mac sounds interesting, though I suspect it will be all about cheesy old Rumours, whilst the band's other albums will be overlooked as usual.
There certainly won't be anything about Peter Green.

Yes I feel the same way. It's as if Fleetwood Mac Version #1 has been erased from the history books. Pity, because I rate the Peter Green era as having produced vastly superior music to what you rightly refer to as the "cheesy" stuff.

Come on chaps ! This is Radio 2 remember - the station for listeners aged mid twenties and upwards whereas in fact we know they have no interest in anyone over 55 and in specialist genre like rock. Aficionados of early Fleetwood Mac albums would be like me in their late 50's now and their style of rock too avant-garde for the R2 audience . Says it all.

I wouldn't really describe the original incarnation of Fleetwood Mac as a rock band - more blues which personally I find very boring although I do agree that the later version of the band sold out their musical roots for commercial success

I certainly agree about R2 ignoring the over 55s and I've been banging on for months if not years about the absence of a decent rock show Mad

or a new station... it's way overdue. The situation is deteriorating rapidly for me. I find myself turning it off instead of listening to shouty female singers and that drip Vine...

anyway, yes.. early Fleetwood Mac.. superb.
Have you heard "Shake Your Money Maker" Ruddles??

No I haven't heard that particular track Santa but the original line up of the band was far too bluesy for my liking

The only so called 'blues' artist I really like is Gary Moore - and even he's far better when he plays out and out rock Smile

Shake Your Money Maker is a great blues track, and certainly not boring Ruddles! It was of course a cover version and many tracks on their eponymous 'dustbin' album in 1968 were covers.

In the 1969 singles charts they outsold everyone else. They had a number one (Albatross) and two number twos (Man Of The World and Oh Well), all Peter Green numbers. The only time you'll hear them on Radio 2 is occasionally on POTP. The numbskulls who run Radio 2 would never have heard of them. Oh Well.

How many have heard both parts of 'Oh Well'? I can only recall hearing the full shebang once on Liz Kershaw's 6 music show about 4 - 5 years ago, since a Top Of The Pops appearence when all of it was aired, well anyway, here it is, I hope you enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rN4FMVqq1cg

Just listened to it, LEE. Nine minutes of perfection. Far too long for cheesy old Radio 2.

It's interesting how all the comments attached to the link really praise PG's Mac and slag off the Buckingham/Nicks Fleetwood Mac (though I have to say I really liked a lot of the latter as well, Tusk, Tango In The Night etc.).

I would be lying if I didn't say that there were some of their latter incarnation that I enjoyed, because I do like some of what came later. At least one of those tracks was heard on Richard Allinson's old Saturday afternoon show (produced by Gary Bones) That was 'Isn't It Midnight' from Tango In The Night. But, I also agree that they should also acknowledge the previous Peter Green Fleetwood Mac, beyond 'Albatross' and the other well known tracks. I challenge Radio 2 to dig into the pre 1975 Fleetwood Mac and play some of it, you never know, you might even get to like it!

The original Fleetwood Mac was never a rock band. Their music was very much rooted in the 60s British white-boy blues movement of which other bands like the Yardbirds, Graham Bond, John Mayall et all were members. Peter Green was among the first wave of electric blues guitarists who - like Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton - gave us a new interpretation of deep-south twelve bar blues. Peter Green was a superb 12-bar blues guitarist who, sadly, succumbed to depression and substance abuse and who never properly recovered from this.

I saw his Splinter Group a few years back the superb Stables Theatre in Wavendon near Milton Keynes (set up and run by Cleo Laine and John Dankworth) with my son and although the band was a very good electric blues band, Peter Green wasn't capable of replicating his classic guitar playing of the late 1960s and this was entrusted to his sideman.

However, there's no way he himself would ever claim to having been a rock guitarist. The post-Green era of Fleetwood Mac was the rock band.

Jennifer Saunders has just tweeted a picture of herself and Dawn French recording their Radio 2 shows, just in case you thought there was a remote possibility of them actually being live and spontaneous on the day.

On show this week Chris said 'that he would have liked to have gone right up to Christmas rather than finish on Friday'. I wonder why the powers that be decided to end his show on Friday, I can only think it was a cost issue. Does Chris get paid per show?

This Christmas, I will be mostly watching telly...what have we done to deserve French and Saunders? I'm amazed that Homeland haven't written them into a plot involving torture of Iraqis.

In amongst the blurb for this programme in the Radio Times it says...."It's like opening the door on two schoolgirls in an unstoppable stream-of-consciousness natter and not being told to get lost"

I think that's supposed to be complimentary!
