After seeing the new year's day weather forecast yesterday, I gave up on the idea of going to Popham for their annual new year fly-in. I think the weather will cancel the event, so I saw the new year in at my local. It's the first time I've been in a pub for new year for about 10 years. It reminds me of a previous new year when I was at Popham on a bad new year's day ( I used to compile the aircraft movements for an enthusiasts' magazine) and that day's forecast was put on a whiteboard thus:

Alpha
Papa
Hoping everyone else had a good new year's eve.

Ah, for the first time Mrs W and I were completely alone at midnight. Our kids are married and both now have young baby or toddler. We will drive round to see them today.
She had me up dancing to the R&B music on Jools' Hootenanay. I was really impressed by Mel C, Ruby Turner and Charlie Wilson. Why can't they play this music on R2 daytime?

Yes, I thought that too, John. Charlie Wilson was so utterly wonderful. Ruby Turner was, well, Ruby Turner and the perfect front-woman for Jools' orchestra as always. Melanie C was surprisingly good, too; she really has matured as a singer and it was fitting that Jools should invite her onboard.
I have to say that I always found Lisa Stansfield a very sexy singer in the 80s, and although she did rest on her most-famous song last night she still looked and sounded great.
What I do find a bit galling is the fact that the "Hootenanny" is recorded in the first week of December at the Maidstone Studios, and knowing this I hate hearing Jools constantly repeating his "Happy NEW Year" line to all and sundry. It's a small price to pay for the kind of show we should being seeing and hearing more on broadcast TV and radio.
And why can't Radio 2 have a more eclectic music mix? Answers on a postcard.........
BTW - I'm listening to Radio Caroline at the moment (now there's a surprise) and the music is exactly that - very eclectic indeed.
I've almost given up on Radio 2, in fact.
PS: It's been nice to hear Richard Allinson on breakfast at the moment. Good things have to come to an end, of course, so it'll be back to Radio 4's "Today" programme next week. |

Happy New Year to all of you!
I started 2014 by going on a rainy muddy walk in and around Bentley Priory/Harrow Weald Common with my walking group. One lady got well stuck in the mud and had to remove her foot from her boot. She hung onto me while two others dug the boot out with sticks. In spite of the challenging conditions we were all glad to have made the effort and enjoyed ourselves. |

| I too thought Jools' hootenanny was brilliant last night, especially Ruby Turner. Haim were also very good. Ironically I didn't really enjoy Ray Davies, though The Kinks were my favourite group back in the 60s. |

Ruby Turner is just fabulous. She has an amazing voice that projects for miles! As for Haim, I thought they were a bit odd but it's nice that Jools makes space for newer acts in between the established performers. It's such a pity that other TV and radio formats don't do the same.

My thoughts too. His rendition of "Lola" started awkwardly and it just felt like he was going through the motions. |

Same here, although I have enjoyed a long listen to R2 today......Tony Blackburn and then Johnnie Walker.

I've listened to more radio 2 over the last couple of weeks. Alex Lester followed by Richard Allinson. It's been like being on a two week holiday that's been particularly enjoyable and as the holiday gets near to it's conclusion, you start feeling sad at the thought of life returning to dull normal. I'm getting those feelings now!

Best wishes for the coming year, everyone - I'm still lurking occasionally but quite frankly am fed up with the dross that masquerades as music/presenters on R2 these days, so my rants on here would be frequent, repetitive and ultimately non-productive! 
Have dipped back into R2 over the holiday period during times of traveling to and from relatives, thank goodness for iPlayer to catch up on interesting shows/presenters relegated to the middle of the night and my more normal diet of R4 these days!
Can't leave without one rant, though! How do French & Saunders get a gig on the radio? They give Alan Carr a run for his money in the annual "Most Cr@ppiest Presenter on R2" awards. Some stand-ins do work well, though - Craig Charles in for SW, for instance.

It's good to see you on one of your infrequent visits. Yes, I think most people here are with you on the matter of dross presenters and programmes on R2 these days. I think we've given up complaining as it's clear that "they' don't care a hoot. Voting with one's feet is the best option, sadly.
Your re-emergence here reminds me that your aviation pictures are the tops. Fabulous work.
PS: Yes, Craig Charles has been a fine stand-in for Steve Wright. Much better than the incumbent, in my view! |

A very belated Happy New year to you all which unfortunately hasn't been too good for us in the Ruddles household so far
Early on the Friday following Boxing Day I had the misfortune to fall and break my ankle and severely damage my cruciate ligament tendon - yes exactly the same injury as suffered by Theo Walcott in the Aresenal v Spurs game last week - so I now have a large metal bolt in my leg and am likely to be in plaster and unable to work for around three months
To make matters worse while I was in hospital early New Year's Day morning three tanked up local ar--holes broke into the house at 3 30am threatening my son with a knife and stealing most of our Christmas presents including a brand new I Phone and X Box One and causing significant damage to much of the furnishings
I returned home from hospital last night to a scene of devastation so right now I feel I'll be glad when 2014 is over but still looking on the bright side despite the horrendous weather elsewhere and the history of flooding here - so far not a sign of water - in fact the road surface is not even wet 
I suppose as someone once said 'Things can Only get Better' but I'm not banking on it - still I did get to listen to an awful lot of radio over the last ten days

Gosh Ruddles you certainly have been through it. Strangely when I heard flood warnings for Chester area last night I thought of you and your cars.

Rotten luck about your ankle,ruddles, but horrendous news about the break in at your house ...your poor son, being confronted with knife wielding scum.
How is he?

Thanks all - my son is fine now - he wasn't harmed - just very shocked but the police did say he was lucky as things could have turned out very differently - in a way I would have preferred to have been there but I wouldn't have been of any help as I can hardly move even now more than a week after the operation
Apparently the Police have video evidence from a local pub of three males answering the description of the attackers being there about three hours earlier so they're hopeful that might prove to be useful
