Just caught up with this weeks journeys and enjoyed them all.
Is it wrong to find Michael strangely attractive?  |

Michael Portillo visited Bletchley Park in Railway journeys this week, he spoke to veteran Betty Webb about the work she did there during war.
All really interesting stuff.
I think the series is getting better and better and I will miss it once it's finished. |

I watched the first episode the other night and thought it seemed better than the last series. Maybe they have a different producer?

Yes, Toggy, I thought it was a very good programme. In his visit to the Victorian "railway town" of Wolverton he was guided by my friend Bill Griffiths, who is the Director of Milton Keynes Museum. Bill coped with the endless retakes and reverse shots etc really well, I thought!
I did think it odd that he took the Bletchley to Bedford line to Fenny Stratford (actually part of Bletchley and and the new city of Milton Keynes now) but after getting off he then had a stroll around Olney. Very peculiar, since Olney is miles away! Understandably he visited Newport Pagnell, where my wife now works, whose branch line from Wolverton was cut off as a result of the Beeching cuts in sixties. It does make a fine cycleway now!

I think its budget is now higher than it was early on, Helen. The series sells well to other networks (at home and overseas) now so there's probably more money in the production pot. I do know that for the Bletchley Park sequence, they consulted BP's Communications Director who in turn put them onto BP's Archivist (who I'm currently working with) to get background info, photos and also an interviewee for Michael. In Wolverton, Bill's staff entertained the programme's researcher and provided all the images of the town and its railway. More researchers is what generally costs money. |

I thought the guide they used in the Manchester - Birkenhead episode was excellent. Oxford Road station was my stop when I comuted daily into Manchester when we first moved here so it was interesting to learn about the history of the area.

| A change in names from Bradshaw to Appleton as far as the book Michael refers to but still the same excellence in the content of the programmes as he continues to present his railway journeys across the pond. |

I've not watched any as yet as I'm way behind with the British ones!
Last night we watched an episode in Sussex where Michael visited Newhaven and the showed pictures of the harbour. Less than half an hour later Newhaven came up in the news about Lord Lucan and his possible escape from there all those years ago! I didn't know anything about the place until then.

The rumour is he was helped by James Goldsmith and John Aspinall. Just before Goldsmith died in 97 he allegedly supplied the information that allowed them to confirm Lucan's death in 1999, but it's taken until now for the family to get the money. But, yes, it does look like Lucan's rich friends got him away to a foreign country. |

Thanks for the names,Ian. James Goldsmith being the father of Zac,one of the candidates for the position of the next Mayor of London.
Lord Lucan must have had help unless he,as his wife believes, jumped to his death from a ferry leaving Newhaven.
Don't suppose we'll ever know the truth now |
