Get ready to fill yer boots!
On this Ashes tour the BBC will broadcast, for the first time, a '24 hour Ashes Experience' with (as the title suggests) round-the-clock coverage.

Most of this will be achieved by (and I think this is great idea) time-shifting a repeat of each day's 'live' commentary to commence at 11.00am GMT on 5-Live Extra and on-line.

I say again, brilliant idea. Well done BBC.

Is it possible to get too much TMS?

Just in case you're not kidding,Colin...Test Match Special.

Great start for the opening batsmen Alastair Cook and Michael Carberry on the first day of their four-day Ashes warm-up game against Australia A.

Thanks for that information,Unclebuck.

Ah yes! I knew that really. (OK, no I didn't). Cool

My wife's work colleague is Alistair Cook's neighbour. Like me, she hasn't a clue about cricket and when he said he played cricket she asked: "So what do you do for a proper job?". His reply was that he actually played cricket for a living and that he's actually been known to play for the national team now and then!

Silly mare! (Mind you, I'd be just as clueless).

See note about commentary time-shifted 'til eleven in the morning. It'll be tempting to avoid the news for a few hours and then listen to this.
Alternatively, you can check the news and decide if it's worth listening to the TMS commentary!

If you have a satellite decoder with built-in HDD recorder such as Sky+ or Freesat+ you can set it to record the broadcast output and then delay the playback for the whole duration. And don't listen to or watch anything else!

Yep....In the past I have recorded the night's on-line commentary on the PC, and then re-broadcast it around the house during the day using the FM transmission dongle.
That works well, as I can move around the house/garden/basement and carry on doing work whilst following the cricket just as I would for a UK day-time test match.

The only problem following the BBC's time-shifted commentary will be the inability to pause it!
Still, I applaud this move to better use their assets to provide a service.
Last year they began putting out a highlights programme on a loop after the live commentary had gone off the air. On the basis that if you've got a broadcast channel then you might as well use it, this has to be sensible thinking.

What a difference a day makes.....Crying or Very sad

Lying in bed last night, listening to the cricket, I was desperately hoping it was a nightmare, rather than reality, I was experiencing as our wickets tumbled. Shocked

The lads have got to pick themselves up,dust themselves down, and start all over again tonight!

The Aussies are getting a bit cocky it's just the one test they will win
Enlgand will still win by 2/3 tests to 1

The talk, post match, as far as England is concerned is all about their mind set.

Can they pick themselves up after such a crushing defeat?

We're going to have to hope so or it's going to be a long, dark winter, cricket wise.

Well done to Australia and of course Mitchell Johnson in particular! (grr) Wink

Now we know why Jonathan looked so out of sorts and uncomfortable, poor man.

I hope he is soon back playing cricket at the highest level if that is what he wants.

I also hope the press have the decency to leave him and his family alone during this stressful time.

Good grief! Shocked that picture of Brian Close, further down that article, after facing the ferocious West Indian attack!

I turned 5 Live Extra on this morning to catch up with the happenings down under only to have to wait for about (an agonising) 5 minutes whilst Geoffrey Boycott and Aggers finished discussing Katy Perry...our Geoffrey is a big fan and is going to see her in Manchester next May.

Back to the cricket and not too bad but could have been much better if Carberry had held on to what was described as an easy catch from Haddin.

Well we are well and truly getting our bums kicked are we not?

I love cricket and like to see England do well but it really serves them right for being so smug.

Amongst all the doom and gloom of this series huge congratulations should go to Ben Stokes for his terrific 120 runs in the second innings of the latest test match.

And huge credit must go to Darren Lehmann, not long in the job,and his men for the way they have (in the main) brushed aside our side to regain the Ashes!

Let's hope our lads can make it some sort of competition at the MCG .........please!

thank God that tour is over
It was like watching a very long slow-motion of a car crash.

I just wish there was at least some indication that someone in the England management structure was even a fraction as angry as the people back at home who were watching and listening.

Only thing is that despite everyone saying that it's the "women's ashes" it isn't! The Ashes is an historical trophy founded after the Australians thumped England and someone burtnt a bail and created the little urn.
This never happened in womens cricket , nor in any other sport;however nowadays the press and the public refer to any England Australia match up as "the ashes" which is totally wrong.

Pedantry rant over!! Wink

All the talk is of Ashley Giles. A 1-4 and 0-3 record doesn't fill me with confidence.

I doubt even Derren Brown could get them out of the hole they're in. Like The Fog, I can't see Ashley Giles being the solution, either. I've always thought Sir Geoffrey of Fitzwilliam would do a good job, but he wouldn't do it, and they couldn't afford him.

Which county did he play for then? Wink Very Happy

Good call with no nonsense Sir Geoffrey (my mam could have caught that in her pinny)Boycott,Raver, but I have a feeling that such an appointment would be met by the ECB in much the same way the FA thought about any appointment of Brian Clough.

I see that Kevin Pieterson's England career is over after he was told he is no longer in their plans.

Bit of a shock, that,to me,so wonder how he feels!

Pietersen said: "I will continue to play but deeply regret that it won't be for England."

Michael Vaughan has ruled himself out for head coach (saying perhaps he would accept a minor role) as has Gary Kirsten.

According to this article ....

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/26005207

Ashley Giles,Mick Newell,Tom Moody and Graham Ford are still in the frame ...no mention of Paul Collingwood there.

Big Mitch terrorised the South Africans, too. 12 wickets!! Maybe we weren't as bad as we thought..or more likely, they're just as scared of him as we were.

You have to hand it to the Aussies, though. The way they've regained top spot, is nothing short of astounding.

Got to admit I don't like the idea of recently retired players joining TMS as soon as they've packed in. I mean they're hardly going to be objective and criticise their mates much. TBH I even think it's too early for Michael Vaughan to be summarising.

It has always struck me that the summarisers/commentators, no matter which country they're from,or how recently they have retired are always scrupulously fair with their comments ...mates or not..... they are talking about them as players not as mates when they're in the 'box'

I think Graeme Swann could prove to be an interesting addition to the team.
