I failed to appreciate Nick Drake at the time but recently bought a compilation CD by him which is very good.
Last November I was driving along one sunny Saturday afternoon listening to the Dermot O'Leary show (actually presented by Ricky Ross of Deacon Blue that day) when a fabulous song came on. It was one of those rare moments when you think: this is brilliant, and you make a point of listening out for who and what it was. It was Band Of Horses, who I'd not heard of, and the title track of an album called Infinite Arms from 2010.
Absolutely superb, it's like an 80s version of Fleet Foxes (both bands come from Seattle). Driving rock and a couple of ballads, a very good album that I can't stop playing. |

The compilation is a good introduction to his music, but try the original albums too - starting with Bryter Layter then Five Leaves Left, Pink Moon.... etc. Sublime, both musically and also lyrically. |

The new Leonard Cohen album Old Ideas, a lovely album and if I wasn't a fan before I think I would have been after this.
Don't understand why R1 hasn't picked up the 120 year olds new album though _________________ You will hear gospel and rhythm and blues and jazz, all those are just labels, we know that music is music. |

An old recording of Alan Titchmarsh's Melodies For You (still very sadly missed ) from 23 Dec 07. As well as Christmas stuff, right now he's playing Morecambe and Wise 'Bring Me Sunshine'.
Timeless!

Yes,that's a lovely song,raver.....what a voice she had....very sad she died so young.
There are three short stories on Radio 4 Extra this week all inspired by songs by Tom Waits
'Come On Up To The House' by AL Kennedy. A man asks for help during the small hours. Read by Peter Capaldi.
'Muriel' by Willy Vlautin'. A widower wonders why customers at his local avoid mentioning his dead wife. Read by Ed Stoppard.
'Step Right Up' by Ian Rankin. A market trader takes a young Londoner under his wing and gives him the name 'Saviour'. Read by Dominic Cooper.

Some of the music I'm listening to ..
Facing West ~ The Staves
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-awEy6dxZHM
Let's Go Swimming Wild ~ Sweet Bamboo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Fkt6S3-NRI
And a strangely, compelling new song from the equally strangely, compelling Nick Cave (and his Bad Seeds)
Animal X
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCwMPHYg7AU
Some of the lyrics from it..
"And she put her hand on his stomach just for the joy of it
But his stomach was where his head was
And she put her hand on his head just for the joy of it
But his head was where his feet were
And she put her hand on his heart,
Right there on his heart, just for the joy of it
But his heart was lying down on the road" |

Sounds wonderful nod but I don't think I'd wish to support Amazon just at the moment when that company is using certain accounting techniques to avoid millions of pounds in tax which places an additional burden on the rest of us _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I've always liked Roy Harper going right to his 1970s touring days. Watching the BBC4 documentary on the making of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" album the other day, I learned that he was working in an adjacent Abbey Road studio to the one Pink Floyd were using and he offered to try singing a difficult vocal on "Have A Cigar" that Roger Waters couldn't manage - and it survives to this day. I didn't know that. |

I saw Roy Harper in July 1971 at a free festival at Surrey University in Guildford (a long time before Guilfest!) and very good he was too. |

My recording of John Wilson's 2011 prom Hooray For Hollywood, his best IMHO. Just the tonic for doing the chores.

Thanks for the info Becky - unfortunately I was in hospital at the time and it's stretching things to be able to listen to anything half decent there - and mobile phones were banned
Actually I would have given my right leg to have heard it at the time - after all bearing in mind the state it was in it wasn't a great deal of use to me _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Really? Most hospitals have lifted that ruling now. In fact, I was at the John Radcliffe in Oxford (in a professional capacity, not as a patient) and what impressed me more than anything else was that the freely available on-site 3G speed was approx 8Mbps download and there was no discouragement from using it.
The clinical standards seemed pretty good as well, I should add! |

Mobile phones were allowed in certain wards from what I could gather Colin - and I could be wrong on this point but I got the impression that in certain ones including mine there had been problems in the past with certain unreasonable patients using them to have conversations in the early hours of the morning thus disturbing the sleep of other people in the process
In fairness they did provide landline phones for every patient as part of the IT facilities available which were free to numbers within the same dialling code area _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Ah yes, that is the biggest problem now. When my late mother-in-law was in hospital she got really irritated with younger patients (it usually was younger people) and visitors talking loudly on their phones for ages. They were even too stupid to switch off or modify their incoming text alerts which would go off all night!
If it were me, I'd need an internet connection and a restriction on voice calling/receiving wouldn't bother me. |

I saw Wilko Johnson live back in 2005 when he was part of The Mad, Bad & Dangerous tour, along with The Hamsters & John Otway. Bought Wilko's Back In The Night CD, along with others by The Hamsters & John Otway. Twas a great evening. I was greatful to Johnnie Walker for mentioning this tour on his, then Drivetime show. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I saw the Feelgoods a few times in the 70s and they were always great gigs. Wilko's "machine gun" style guitar playing was fab!
I'm pleased to see him holding his own despite refusing chemo-therapy last year. The support he's had from his Facebook followers is inspirational. |
