Here's a little fantasy game to while away the hours.

Just suppose you could live anywhere in the UK that you wanted but not the area where you live now. If property prices and other factors were no object, where would you choose?

It would take an earthquake to persuade me to move from Northumberland but if I really had to, these are my alternatives:

The Scottish Borders
North Yorkshire (Dales or Moors)
Cheshire
North Wales
Cornwall
Brighton area
Canterbury area

Over to you.

Ian.

Rural Northumberland (anywhere from Matfen across to Rothbury and up to Alnwick)
Any of the Orkney Islands (preferably Sanday or Mainland)
Sutherland (preferably Lochinver, Lairg or Rogart)
Easter/Wester Ross (preferably Ullapool, Gairloch or Strathpeffer)
Kintail (Plockton or Lochcarron)

Where I live is great (the city, the village (where I live), the mountains one direction, the sea the other, the wildlife, the dolphins! (from my window) but maybe Alaska if I had a boat plane Cool

Keswick, Windermere or Ambleside in the lakes. I like North of England as they seem more friendly and not too clicky as they are in the south.

Most definitely Northumberland - beautiful, wild...empty!! Perfect.
Scottish Borders, particularly around Kelso
Peak District
North Yorks

Also quite fancy the Scilly Isles

At the moment, I can lean out of the window and shake hands with the seagulls, we are right on the cliffs overlooking the North Sea. Magic.
I have to say I haven't visited as many places in the UK as most folk here seemed to have done but I don't think anywhere in the UK would be my ideal - sorry, don't wish to offend.
Now San Francisco would be my heading... Very Happy

I don't think there is anywhere that is perfect to live, UK for all it's faults is still a good place to live, IMHO. I enjoyed the climate in the Middle East form November thru April, but without the AC and temperatures of 50 - 55 deg C and humidity between 90 & 98%, May thru October was unpleasant. Germany & Holland were both great countries to live in, & don't know if it is still the same but, with the exception of once a month, all the shops closed at lunch time on Saturday, you could not wash your car or hang washing to dry, unles you had a young baby, on Sunday's in Germany. The shops not being open was great for us fellas, but then one had to be up early to do the shopping before mid-day! So I will settle for UK, we have a diverse and beautiful landscape, places that have a feeling of total isolation, yet are no more than 20 minutes from a busy town or city. The Peak District, the Lakes, most of Scotland and much of Wales, the Cotswolds, the New Forest and so much coastline; how lucky are we?

Not very lucky; Council Tax, T.V. licence (sp) I would sooner be in Norway; brill coastline, huge welfare payouts - my Aunt got a 3 grand grant a couple of years ago to convert a bathroom into a wetroom 'cos she was over 70! And she never asked for it.
Trouble is I am a Brit married to a Brit, so I will have to divorce in order to claim.
Thinking about it tho'

If not where I am (for family, friends etc) then it would be NE Norfolk ( Stalham, North Walsham). We have holidayed in the area for years, and I still harbour a secret wish to open a cafe near to the river.

I'm a northerner married to a southerner so have to watch what I say!

But thanks, Mark--you'd find the same in the North-East as the North-West.

Shocked A stone's throw from me. Very Happy My mum was born in Stalham and my grandad worked at the train station many moons ago.
All very nice but not for me, I'm happy living by the sea but not so keen on the Norfolk countryside or the Broads.

Cornwall isn't always warm. Just wait till the classic grey sticky sea mist comes and stays. Horrible!

Anyhow, it's not the same Cornwall that I grew up in..... it's full of South-Easterners with too much money who want to change things in their favour these days.

Me? I'd like to live in my little Andalucian house overlooking the blue mediterranean sea. Unfortunately, the other half needs to be in the UK for much of the year so that one's out for a while yet!

Ella

My Brother has just bought a very nice bungalow on a riverside estate with swimming pool, gym, fitness centre. Immaculate and all for £9000... in Florida. Wink

I hope you have a great time too.
I must admit, at the end of the summer I had to drop Father in Law off at the riverside in Acle to pick up a broads cruiser and there's a riverside cafe there. I did think it would make a nice business myself, very nice relaxed atmosphere.
