Quote:
Veteran entertainer Ronnie Corbett is to retire from television work after being admitted to hospital recently with a mystery illness.

The comedian was taken to the Princess Royal University Hospital last weekend after experiencing chest and stomach pains at his nearby home in Croydon. The 83-year-old has since been discharged but it is thought he will return for further tests after doctors failed to make a diagnosis.

Corbett's wife Anne said: "We didn't know what was wrong. He was feeling sick in his stomach and he wasn't well. The hospital ran lots of tests, he was in there for several days."

But she confirmed he will be retiring: "He won't be doing any more TV,” she told the Sunday Times. “He's 83. He won't be like Bruce Forsyth."

Corbett left hospital in time to deliver a eulogy at a memorial for fellow broadcaster Sir David Frost last Thursday. His wife said: "It was such an emotional day and Ronnie was determined to be there."

Corbett’s latest health scare follows his collapse two years ago at a Chinese restaurant while celebrating the news that he was to be awarded a CBE in recognition of his services to entertainment and charity. He was on medication after recently having undergone surgery on his knee.

That's sad news, hope he recovers.

I really hope he might reconsider his decision to retire from TV if he makes a good recovery - it's great to see him on there even if it's only him introducing some old sketches

For me he's a truly great entertainer Smile

I've worked with Ronnie Corbett a couple of times. Not only is he smaller than he appears on the telly but he's every bit as funny! Lovely bloke and I wish him well.

I saw The Two Ronnies at the Palladium, many moons ago. Ronnie C was so much funnier and more at home on a stage than Ronnie B, it seemed to me.

At the time, I didn't know he'd served many years in the West End, chiefly in Danny La Rue's shows. He was brilliant that night. Ronnie B was a comedy genius, but Ronnie B proved he was one, too. Some lovely cameos over the last few years...including this, from the brilliant Extras.

He's earned a nice retirement, hopefully with plenty more golf. I was surprised to read that he lives in Croydon, though.

The story's not true apparently.

Ian I thought I heard that as well, but I didn't hear the whole bit of the news so just thought I'd misheard in the first place.

Nice one Ian. I did see, a few days ago, that the retirement rumours were denied, but since then, this thread popped up, so thought, seeing it was from the RT, that they were true.

Cancel the new set of golf clubs, Ronnie... Smile

The Radio Times happy to use any sort of clickbait and misinformation nowadays. Such a shame.
