BBC Radio 2 is bringing back Radio 1′s long running show The Evening Session complete with presenters Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley.

They’ll be back on-air in April from Maida Vale studios from 7th to 10th April, 8pm till 10pm each night, as part of a bigger celebration of Britpop. Clips from original output will also be aired, including Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker co-hosting with Jo Whiley.

Britpop at the BBC will include special shows and documentaries on Radio 2, 6 Music and BBC Four to mark 20 years since its creation.

Jo Whiley says: “I will always jump at the chance to work with Steve. He is my radio ‘other half’ and we did fight the Britpop wars together, after all. It was a great time to be a DJ on UK radio but, as ever, when you’re in the eye of the storm, you are blissfully unaware. It’s only in hindsight that you appreciate what a privilege it was to live and work through such an exciting time for British music.”

On 6 Music, Steve Lamacq hosts a week of special programmes in his daily show from 4 to 7pm. He says: “For me, this is the week 20 years ago that the musical tectonic plates shifted. On the Tuesday, Oasis played live on Radio 1 for the first time and on the Friday morning we heard the news of Kurt Cobain’s death. It was as if one scene had announced it had arrived, as another began to lose its way. Without Kurt, grunge lost its momentum, while Britpop was building by the week. Blur’s Girls And Boys was all over the radio ahead of the release of Parklife and Elastica had just had their first hit. But this was the week when you thought ‘music’s coming home’.”

Bob Shennan, Controller of Radio 2, 6 Music, Asian Network and popular music TV says: “To mark the 20th anniversary of Britpop, the BBC is uniquely able to raid its own incredible television, radio and picture archives. And through our current line-up of presenters – including those who lived, breathed and were central to the scene two decades ago – Britpop at the BBC will be bringing this era back to life once more.”

I'm rather looking forward to this week of shows but I just hope that we get to hear a true sample of the Britpop which was around 20 years ago and not simply Oasis, Blur and Pulp - good though they were Smile

I'd say that there's every chance, seeing as 'Lammo' & Jo Whiley are both lovers of the music they play.
