The second half of a comedy duo writing partnership who brought us such classics as The Good Life,Ever Decreasing Circles and Brush Strokes has sadly died at the age of 79.

His writings with John Esmonde brought some wonderfully comic moments to our screens.

I was only watching an episode of Ever Decreasing Circles the other night and enjoying it just as much as I did the first time round.Very Happy

Bob was a superb writer of gentle comedy and Ever Decreasing Circles is absolutely excellent - I've been watching it religiously every Thursday after TOTP

Sad that probably few members of the public would regard him as a household name despite the fact that the series he wrote with his partner attracted audiences of millions but perhaps that's how he would have wanted it

Really sad to watch so many great comedy writers passing away in recent years - I can't say I'm very impressed with their replacements who are around these days Sad

One of my current clients has been a director of TV comedy shows for 25+ years and his view is that there's no shortage of really good writers - the shortage exists with really good, intuitive commissioning executives and channel heads at the main TV networks who have neither the passion for their medium nor the guts to stick their heads above the political parapets like their predecessors did in the 60s and 70s.

I have another long-standing friend who started life as a TV documentaries director and producer. He then went on to be head of documentary programming for Channel 4. I asked him recently why he has quit TV altogether. His reply was "I can't be bothered. It's all run by complete di**heads!"
