....be in her job this time next week?
Maria Miller that is ....
From The Guardian
An aide to Maria Miller (Mary Macleod) has accused the media of whipping up a "witch-hunt" about the culture secretary's overclaimed expenses because she was an architect of press regulation and gay marriage legislation.
Mary Macleod said she thought newspapers had a "hidden agenda" in pursuing the story, after the Commons watchdog ordered Miller to pay back £5,800 in mortgage expenses and make an apology in the House of Commons.
Macleod, who also accused newspapers of harassing the culture secretary's elderly parents and children outside her house, sent a text message to backbench Tory colleagues saying she believed there was a "witch-hunt on Maria due to Leveson". It added that Miller "would really appreciate your support".
That rather smacks of desperation and hasn't helped MM at all I wouldn't think
Doesn't she know there isn't much support for MM from the ordinary 'man in the street' over this affair?

(Perhaps this should be a poll) |

David Cameron has not handled the whole thing well IMO. |

Correct Toggy!
Dave was cruisin' for a bruisin' at PM's Questions today so I reckon he 'leaned' on her to resign at yesterday's Cabinet meeting.
"Her resignation marks a severe blow to the personal authority to the prime minister, who had called on the press to "leave it there" on Friday, a day after Miller issued an abrupt 32-second apology over her expenses."

It's interesting that David Cameron is reported to have been preparing a statement in his continued support of her in response to inevitable questions in PMQs today, but now that she has decided to resign (after huge pressure from Tory back-benchers, no doubt) he'll now appear in the Commons today looking a bit more stupid than he looked a few days ago. |

About time too! Cameron has shown very poor judgement in his choice of whom he supports: Maria Miller, best friends Rebekah & Charlie Brooks, his employment of Andy Coulson etc etc. |

I also agree with everything which has been said here
Cameron is a disaster for the Tory Party and I still think he could be ditched before the next election _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Good points,Eileen.
Saw this today...
"Maria Miller has resigned. She is on her way home ... just has to decide which one now." |

Theresa May is often tipped to be the next Tory leader. I shall never forget Matt's cartoon in the Daily Telegraph when she mistimed her chance to eject an Islamic troublemaker:

A prime example of why the press shouldn't be shackled. They're the only credible opposition this government has.

Whilst I agree that the press were entirely right about the issue of Maria Miller you have to ask why they took the attitude they did
Was it because they really believed that she had been guilty of some major transgression of the rules - or rather was it because they wanted to get rid of her because she was the person who was about to bring in a system of (rather weak) press regulation
The whole press fraternity are hypocrites anyway because they do on an industrial scale day in day out far worse than Maria Miller has done - bad enough though that was - the words 'pot' and 'kettle' come to mind _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

As you know, I don't agree with you. "The whole of the press" is a massive sweep. My friend is a freelance sub-editor at The Guardian (he used to be an editor on a specialist magazine for whom I wrote a monthly column) and he's definitely not worthy of your condemnation as a "hyprocrite". He is a very good journalist, though!
It's as daft as saying that all lawyers are blood-sucking leeches simply because a few at the top will present a prosecution case against their mothers for the sake of a wad of cash! |

As it happens Colin I actually agree with your supposition that 'most lawyers are leeches' but having been a social welfare legal aid lawyer for most of my life I don't think it could be said that I fall into that category
There might be quite good individual journalists in a few circles but as you and I both know their input and output is always subject to the scrutiny of others and if their angle on any particular story does not fit in with the general philosophy of the particular organisation then it will either be dropped or substantially amended to the point where it bears little or no resemblance to that originally intended - in fairness the Guardian is probably one of the least worst offenders on that point
Sadly corruption rules in all areas of life in Britain today _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |
