I had a very nice gentleman from Ipsos Mori knock on my door yesterday asking if I would care to take part in the RAJAR surveys.

Naturally I agreed, if only to get a bit more information as to how listening figures are actually calculated. It does seem it really is only guesswork as the results are taken from an average of participants polled.....but you knew that anyway.

The interesting thing is it's all done online. You register with a password and a PIN number and have to log your daily listening results. But....even if you only listen for 5 minutes you still are expected to log that in as "listened". Fortunately it takes me less than 5 minutes to turn Elaine Paige off but I'm not always so quick off the mark with Chris Evans. Should I declare that or just say I don't listen at all?

Incidentally, if anyone ever gets approached, they lure you in with the promise you'll get paid £5 for the privilege of participating. Well they do pay, and not by bank transfer, it's actually a nice crispy note, cash in yer hand, no questions asked....

Well, what was an interesting thread I've managed to turn into another CE bashing debate....hooray!!

How can anyone possibly be sure that the feedback of individual contributors is accurate bearing in mind there is no checking system Confused

Surely there must be many people who regard the offer of £5 as paultry considering the time involved and might those people not just be inclined to deliberately lie as a way of getting their own back

People might think I'm cynical but those kind of things do happen in the real world Smile

I'm surprised they're actually knocking on doors. That's very 1950s, is it not? Do they still have 405/625-line switches on the TVs?

I got RAJARed a few years ago. That, thankfully, was done in the old fashioned way. Pen & paper.
Do you really want to admit to listening to that annoying berk Evans!!
Paracetamol manufacturers might thank you though!! Wasn't it really just three minutes & seemed that much longer!!

I certainly wouldn't declare it on any RAJAR return. I'd lie if accidently exposed to him!

Ah so they've caught up with the 21st Century, it was pen and paper when I did it, must be about 10 years ago. If I remember correctly the hour was divided up in slots of 15 mins then which you crossed out if you had listened to anything.

I don't think I got any payment at all though.............

If I'm honest, R2 gets switched on for me at around 7am and then it's background noise all day until 7pm when there are things to watch on TV.

There's nothing about CE's show that makes me want to listen but every morning at 7:30 when he asks the kids what they did for the first time yesterday and they award themselves "a million out of ten" I instantly hit the next button on the car radio which unfortunately is Heart FM. I will declare those 5 minutes of Heart on my survey and as it all has to be compiled this week I will probably miss out both CE and Michael Ball as well.

And I won't bother entering Simon Mayo's All Request Friday either as that is just another pointless feature that he has unwittingly inherited from Evans and if I hear Dancing Queen or Come On Eileen one more time I might just lose it.... Mad

Radio 2 has got slightly overrated now. Shame there are a lot of DJ's who are simply underrated for celebrities on the station.

Alex Lester, Janice Long, Johnnie Walker and Richard Allinson should be given more airtime covering shows than those Patrick Kieltys. At least Tony Blackburn can be heard covering Steve Wright shows occasionally.

It was pen and paper when I did it too. Always thought that, at the very least, the contributors should be consistent like they are in TV. Just randomly turning up on different people's doorsteps doesn't seem very scientific.

However, it's the only system there is and everyone uses it so no-one can say anyone's benefiting or losing out because of it.

Thanks for the warning about TB. I haven't listened to Steve Wright for ages, and even less chance if I know TB is on. Rolling Eyes
