Listening to Tony Blackburn yesterday I was reminded of the story of Diana Ross's track 'I'm Still Waiting' and how after hearing it he phoned Motown and pretty much begged them to release it as a single. Of course the rest is history.

It did get me thinking would it happen today? I guess not as things have changed so much, but are there any other tracks that were hits mainly due to DJ's playing them to death to promote them?

The only other one I can think of is Jimmy Ruffin's 'What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted' that Johnnie Walker just wouldn't let go of (rightly so IMHO)!

Anyone know of other such tracks?

During his time on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show, Simon Mayo managed to make hits of Donald Where's Your Troosers?, Kinky Boots, and Always Look On The Bright Side of Life.

I've a feeling that Sir Terry Wogan was largely responsible for breaking Eva Cassidy's take on 'Fields Of Gold'. Also I think I heard Katie Melua on his show first.

I remember Noel Edmonds trying really hard with Harry Chapin's WOLD and Cats in the Cradle but unfortunately neither of them really made it.

I think Terry Wogan's partner in crime, Wally (the Mid Herts maestro) was responsible for bringing Eva Cassidy's "Somewhere over the rainbow" to notice - made it a huge hit and the album it was from "Songbird" had "Fields of gold" as one of the tracks. Truly memorable.
RIP Wally Sad

I had always assumed Harry Chapin's excellent WOLD was a huge hit but perusal of my Guinness Book Of Hit Singles shows it only reached no 34!!

Unbelievable for such a great song.
