I saw this trailed on TV last night so thought I'd post a link. It runs until the end of October so plenty of time to tell them what you think! It's quite a long questionaire but you can save and return later.
Maybe if enough respond something could happen and perhaps R2 Extra could come about..........I'm only joking but it's a nice thought.

I'm not even going to bother, to be honest. Radio 2 is now past redemption and with another round of internal cuts due I can't see any point! I listen to the station's output so little now that I can't say I care - and I don't think anything will be acted upon anyhow. |

I think I have reached Colin's level of indifference. I usually forget to tune in to Desmond and I just don't bother with BBC iplayer anymore _________________ -

Well, I still soldier on, listening to the few programmes which really attract me: Desmond, FNIMN, Clare Teal and Don Black. Also the current repeats of Barry Manilow on great song writers and usually the Russell Davies interviews (although I would so love him to revert to his long-running series on popular music of past decades) |

My view is why not tell them that, I did. |

My rationale is that (a) I just don't care, and (b) I seriously question the integrity of those in charge to do anything about it. We have a BBC Trust that's impotent and fearful of the slightest squeak from politicians and we have an OfCom which is toothless. That's why I think it's a waste of my time. |

Patrick Kielty said something interesting this morning. He was asked to choose songs for his Tracks Of My Years and he suggested some obscurity by Emmylou Harris, only to be told that it wasn't 'popular' enough, ie not the usual fodder that dreary old daytime Radio 2 tells us we should like (Abba, Madonna etc).
I shall fill in this survey and quote the above. |

Glad I wasn't the only one to notice that! I wonder if anything will be said?

How things change! I remember Turin Brakes doing Tracks of My Years and picking an obscure dubstep chilled-out dance track "just because it'd be funny to hear it on daytime Radio 2" and Ken playing it in full. |

I heard that as well and it's disappointing they are pre-selecting for that as well. I imagine the same thing happens for shows like Mayo's Friday show when people ring in with songs not classed as 'popular' in R2's view |

Nod, you are right. Indeed. a couple of years ago when Lisa Tarbuck was sitting in for Simon Mayo on the Friday request show, a listener requested something vaguely obscure, and Ms T actually said: oh, can't you request something like Abba or Queen?' |

I'd love to have heard the listener's response to that! I wonder if the BBC are still in denial about it being 'dumbed down'. I've just looked at the playlist for Ms T's own Saturday evening show, there's a few obsurities in there, as there usually is. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

And there was another good example of Radio 2's supine obsession with the bland and unchallenging.
Today on JW's SOT70s a listener requested an album track by Lou Reed which is apparently seven minutes long and has a good guitar solo. However, Johnnie said that he would only play the three minute version!
Pathetic. Now I don't know if this was his decision or the producers' (I suspect the latter). But it epitomises Radio 2's blandness and reluctance to play anything remotely different.

I think we can cut Johnnie some slack here, he did include a few obscurities in today's show: The Yachts 'Suffice To Say'; Jimmie Spheeris 'Moon On The water', which Johnnie admitted took some finding; Nils Lofgren 'Back It Up' & the show ended with an unfamiliar Roxy Music Track 'Prairie Rose'. I think those make up for playing that shortened Lou Reed track.
I doubt that we'll be hearing Gambo on the radio in the near future! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Yes, I enjoyed the Roxy Music track which I'd not heard before. The other ones you mention were good as well. I just wish he would play more album tracks and fewer hits which we've heard before.
And did he have to play All Right Now yet again?? (good song though). |

It was from earlier in their recording career before Ferry dominated and they started doing more smoochy stuff. I saw Roxy Music at a small club in Devonport just as Virginia Plain hit the chart (1972) and they were incredible - largely because they were shockingly different. Their first two albums were brilliant (in the true sense of the word) but I think they lost it after that. |
