A good weekend for whoever wrote 'You Can't Hurry Love'.

The original by The Supremes was played on SOTS and then on Patrick Kielty two hours later. And then Wogan plays the Phil Collins version today!

How much,I wonder, do they get for each play?

I was watching something the other day (can't remember what) and someone started singing and another person said "Don't sing,we can't afford to pay royalties"

Just imagine how much Steve Wright must cost the BBCin that case - or perhaps his utterances aren't classed as singing Laughing

These appear to be the going rates for a 3min, 30 sec song played on the radio:

BBC Radio 1 – up to £52.
BBC Radio 2 - up to £76.
BBC 6 Music – up to £13.
BBC 1Xtra - up to £11.
BBC Regional Stations – up to £4.
BBC Asian Network – up to £16.
BBC Radio 3 - £36
BBC Radio 4 - £87
BBC Five Live - £25
BBC World Service - £59
Classic FM - £15
Talk Sport - £9
Absolute Radio 105.8 - £2

BBC 1 – £91.91 primetime / £49.36 non-primetime
BBC 2 – £23.24 primetime / £12.48 non-primetime
Channel 4 - £22.66 primetime / £12.16 non-primetime
Channel 5 – £9.82 primetime / £5.27 non-primetime

The BBC have a blanket deal with the PRS so they can play as much music as they like.

Thanks Ian ..that's an interesting read.

Looking at the figures the amount paid seems to be in proportion with how many people listen to the stations, that is until you come to Radio's 2 and 4?

It's based on station budget rather than listeners. That's why Classic FM only pay a third of what BBC Radio 3 pay despite having three times as many listeners. Seems a bit wobbly to me!
