I was in Marks this morning doing some food shopping and went to pay for my items at the self service machines. My first three items went through the bar code scan thingy and beeped for each one but then the machine decided it didn't want to go any further. An assistant came up and used his key, as they do, to put it right but then said that a carton of eggs I had put through had not registered...I had not noticed as they had beeped...he put them through the scanner again and again they beeped but did not come up as being paid for. At the fourth attempt they registered but if the machine hadn't broken down halfway through I would have carried on and not paid for the eggs as I hadn't seen that they hadn't registered. I said to the assistant what would have happened if the alarm had gone off when I went out of the doors as if I had stolen them? He had no answer which was rather worrying.
I think it's the 'manned' tills for me from now on! |

Couldn't agree with you more Becky. Whenever I use the things I'm forever having to wait for assistance as items are not recognised. I don't know if it's just the way I pack or what but other people seem to whizz through, maybe I'm just a luddite _________________ The wheel keeps on turning...

When I was in Tesco this morning all the self service tills were out of order. The checkout operator said that everybody was complaining even though there were no queues. Perhaps some people don't like to interact with other people and prefer machines. Remember they might have to take their phones from their ears to use a manned till. |

Well as I seldom get home before 7pm these days I usually call in at my local ASDA and end up buying a combination of real ale and reduced food
I can't go to do self scan as the alcohol requires approval and there isn't enough ink in the barcodes for the reduced items in order to get them to scan so an assistant has to scan almost all of my shopping
What's even worse is that they now close the tills at 9pm so after that people have to use self scan
These supermarkets are trying to force customers to use these processes against their wishes and at the same time use it as an excuse to dispense with the services of thousands of loyal and helpful till operatives _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I use Waitrose for most of my shopping and always use a self-scanner handgun as I go round. It's really helpful as I can pack items the way I want and in the order I want in the correct bag rather than do it in a rush to keep up with a speedy till assistant. I use the self-scanner tills if I have just a couple of items.
Anything to speed up the amount of time it takes to shop - and I quite enjoy using the DIY technology as it very rarely goes wrong, in Waitrose anyway! |

I love the self-scan handgun. I take my own bag and once my own bag is full I stop shopping. I don't think this was the supermarket's plan, as I'm spending much less!
I don't mind the self-service tills either. As I used to work on the tills I can do it fairly quickly, then sneak myself a couple of extra Clubcard points and be on my way. The Booths tills are awful, though - as if designed for Mr Tickle.
Of far greater issue to me is my local Tesco have just had a massive makeover, consisting of a lot of wood and it looks terrible, like a 2nd-year art school project. I do think if Tesco spent less time messing around with pine and technology and just reduced prices they wouldn't be in the trouble they're in. |

I never use the self scanner tills as every time I have done in the past there has been a problem. It takes far longer most times.

Believe me,Foggy, it's the machine.

Don't get me started on that, graham.

I agree ruddles...I emailed Marks about just this and was told it is what most customers want. FleetingEileenM wrote: | it very rarely goes wrong, in Waitrose anyway! |
Not just in Marks for me,Eileen ...(we don't have a Waitrose) every time I have been in a new Sainsburys near me an assistant has had to 'sort' the machine out.

I have been in Marks when there is no one on the sit down tills,Helen, and have therefore been 'forced' to go on the self service tills...well that or wait for someone to turn up. |

There is no way that I will use these self service tills, ever. If that is all they have open I will abandon my shopping and leave. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

I find the self serve tills are OK if you don't have any more than 5 items or any restricted items.
I was amazed to find one day while using a self serve till that vanilla extract is a restricted item, so was the assistant! |

How did you manage to get the assistant through the scanner then, Toggy?
I hate using the self service tills too. Too much hassle if things go wrong. |
