I enjoyed that too. She had a wonderful voice.
Mind you, it's such a good song anyway.

Great chart last week, from 1970. I well remember buying Let's Work Together and Reflections Of My Life, from the Co-Op in Woolwich, and hanging around the record counter in Woolworth's, making doe eyes at the Saturday girl who worked there, constantly playing I Want You Back. I don't think she noticed me at all... Crying or Very sad

I enjoyed hearing Venus by Shocking Blue, an excellent song and much better than the Bananarama rubbish.
It was in my head all Sunday and I thought I hope JW plays it on SOT70s. And he did.

Ah.. well I hadn't noticed. Technically speaking, though, it could be the right thread as all the songs would have been released in 1969.

Nice little anecdote from Brian this morning re the harmonica player on Bruce Chanel's Hey Baby (Delbert McClinton) When he was on a visit to the UK McClinton instructed John Lennon on the finer points of blues harmonica playing. Lennon put the lessons to use right away on "Love Me Do" and later "Please Please Me"

Loved hearing Forget Him (wtitten by Tony Hatch) by Bobby Rydell on this morning's programme...

If You Don't Want My Love by Robert John, was the standout track for me. Hadn't heard it for quite a while.

Here's a glaring mistake on behalf of the Radio 2 website crew. On the tracklisting, it lists 'Satisfaction' as being by Otis Redding, they actually played 'satisfaction' by The Rolling Stones! http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b041xv3l as part of the 'Both sides of a disc' feature.

I thought that particular selection was a notably boring and mediocre one

The 'A' side is not exactly underplayed on UK radio and the 'B' side was frankly not worthy of being even a 'B' side

There were some fairly decent tracks on today's show but Mr Swern certainly doesn't seem to have lost his penchant for playing obscure tracks which weren't hits simply because they were so bad - the Susan Maughan one played today being a good example Sad

I missed the first hour, which from the tracklisting wasn't too bad, with The Byrds 'My Back Pages' and The Small Faces 'Tin Soldier', both excellent songs.
The second hour was pure drivel, only two songs I'd heard of (Hollies and Billy Fury). The rest was the usual banal obscurities. It's as if Swern wants to lose as many listeners as possible. Time for new blood.

Missed all of 26/4, had flu and couldn't even be bothered to listen to the radio, but looking at playlist there are a lot of rarities on it. Maybe I'll engage the playlister to look up a few of them via Spotify?

Only heard last half hour of this week's (03 May) show (still a bit under the weather) but again some rarities. I enjoyed the Mamas and Papas Go Where You Wanna Go, but wonder why they didn't play the track from the album that Brian mentioned, a Lou Adler compilation from memory?

Another strange one was Azzurro from an Italian singer (they have the name completely wrong on the playlist as I tried to look him up today) Adriano Celentano. A song you'll more than likely hate but a bit of an earworm! The You tube clip will drive you insane
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckWLcTrKzaw , but the tune is familiar to me for reason's I've no clue to, other than in 1968 I spent a month in Belgium on a school exchange and as it was released that year maybe it was played a lot there as it's typical of European music of that time. The guy wasn't bad looking either!

It was followed on the show by the Thing, a track I've not heard in decades but it made me smile (funny what amuses you when you're not feeling 100%...........)

Anyway that's my take on it!

I've been away and thought I'd catch up with Brian Matthews and what he had to play yesterday, whilst getting Sunday lunch ready, but it's not available!

Anyone know why this is? (same applies to POTP) Evil or Very Mad

Hi Becky

Just had a look and the playlist is there now. I did read on Twitter (I'm not a very regular user!) yesterday that there were some problems with bbc.co.uk so maybe that is why there was a delay in updating the page.

H

PS Nice to see you back!

I tried SOTS today on Listen Again and it worked but POTP is still unavailable. Having a quick look at some of the other programmes on R2 some are working and some are still not!

Arthur Prysock?... never heard that name before today when I caught up with Brian's programme - lovely voice - (not unlike that of Billy Eckstine which is no bad thing) must look up his other work.

And talking of lovely voices Sam Cooke must have one of the 'loveliest' of all time.

I like the version of Anyway That You Want Me (Troggs) by Evie Sands that Brian played - Spiritualized do a good version too.

Had never heard of this song or the group until I listened to Brian's programme....

The Darlettes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QroRV2O0eGk

Surprising,to me, listening to it that it wasn't a hit.

Lots of SOTS to enjoy....for me Wink in this particular programme.

While I enjoy SOTS I often wonder if crooners or easy listening artists were still having hits at the time.
Were they out of fashion or does the show not really like playing that sort of music?

It depends on which part of the decade I think Gazmando. Matt Monro had hits as did Engleburt (sp?) and Andy Williams and I suppose it depends on who you are including in 'crooners', but I do agree they are seldom played these days.

I enjoyed this week's edition and didn't know about the court case over Len Barry's 123 and the Supreme's Ask Any Girl which was the 'b' side of Baby Love. I had both singles at the time, and played Ask Any Girl a lot, but Len Barry's was out a year after the Supreme's so I suppose they weren't played together that much so I didn't realise the similarity.

A better than usual SOT60s yesterday with music by Traffic and Pink Floyd and some good old fashioned pop like Silhouettes and The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore. And the wonderful My Back Pages by The Byrds!

Not so many pre 1962 obscurities as well.

I agree Schiz that it was a great deal better than for several weeks but it really annoys me that whereas the show always used to finish on a high the last track played these days is invariably some obscure early sixties track which was never a hit and which most people have almost certainly never heard of Rolling Eyes

I agree Ruddles. He played a record by someone called Babbity Blue that wasn't a hit anywhere and no one's ever heard of. Having heard it I can see why no one bought it. The trouble is SOTS is becoming The Swern Huge Collection Show. Sometimes I have this feeling that there's going to be a test at the end. God, I miss the Vocalist!

As I've said many times before, ruddles, I like hearing sounds of the sixties that I haven't heard before so it's not a problem for me.

I didn't know that Mel Carter had recorded Band of Gold...I had only heard it before sung by Don Cherry. It was in an episode of Call The Midwife by him. I love Mel's version!

I thought it was a great programme on Saturday. Well known favourites alongside less well known ones from the era....Brian gets it right as far as I'm concerned.

Ruddles, I agree about the last song played on SOTS. It's always some ridiculous obscurity from 1961. You'd think they'd play a well known hit at the end to encourage more listeners. It seems Phil Swern is trying to sabotage the 60s.

At least the Annoying Little Twerp who comes on at 10 o'clock plays a good 60s song soon after.

I only heard the second half of SOT60s yesterday, but looking at the music played just now it seemed to be worth listening to. The Doors, Yardbirds, Supremes, Applejacks (Tell Me When was the first record I ever bought ,as I've said many times here) and the wonderful Do I Love You by The Ronettes, a brilliant Phil Spector production.

And then ten golden minutes: Stay With Me Babe (Walker Brothers), Please Don't Go (Sonny and Cher) and Go Now (Moody Blues).

One of the best SOT60s ever. Perhaps producer Phil Swern was still on his hols.

I must have switched on around the same time as you Schiz! I absolutely loved Ronettes' Do I Love You and enjoyed the rest of the show too.

Must try and Listen Again to the rest now that there is longer to do so. With so many repeats on at other times I might just find the time.

Do I Love You is one of my all time favourites,Schiz...it is as you say a wonderful sound. Phil Spector, for all his faults, knew what he was doing in a recording studio.

Lots to enjoy ...many that you have mentioned...in yesterday's programme

One I had never heard before was the Sandie Shaw one he played and I think Brian said it got to number 21 in the charts.

No such presenters on Radio Caroline at 10.00am Saturday. Ex-Luxembourg DJ Pete Antony was really flying on Saturday - the music (a great balance of classics plus lots of up-coming bands) was just great. I can't imagine having to suffer Graham Norton's show (do any of the "guests" booked onto the show have nothing whatever to sell?) even if I were desperate!

Of course SOTS isn't live as I understand it - it's prerecorded which presumably explains why if some well known sixties artist dies there is no mention of it until a couple of weeks later - but I do get your drift Smile

I listened to the last show and thought the first hour was excellent but then in the early part of the second hour the show began to drift into the usual American obscurities but only for a short time and then got better towards the end

I noticed that as the theme was tracks which were titled using the last word of the preceeding song it was a pity that they didn't manage to achieve a completely symetrical pattern by the last word of the final song being the same as the first word of the track which started the show - or am I being too pedantic Smile
