Don't always catch these programmes but I watched the one from last Saturday night and thought it was a cracking edition!

Sad Cafe were on and I thought I'd look them up to see how they were going on only to find their singer, Paul Young, had died in 2003 from heart problems....he was just 53 years of age.... Crying or Very sad

We appear to be at the end of May now. Anyone know what is happening. Is it that we are missing out the shows with problem DJs or is BBC4 going to take over from BBC3 when we have the summer of sport.

It's very odd, isn't it?
We were commenting on exactly the same thing earlier this week..... at this rate we'll be doing the Christmas records some time in mid Summer!

We stack up recordings on our Tivo box, so we can choose to watch them pretty much in time with the natural passage of the year.

Yes, it was Radio 1 Anniversary episode - which meant all the old presenters came on and said hello. One of the songs features them all dancing together, so you've got Bates, Wright, Jensen, Peel alongside Savile, DLT, Jonathan King, and others. It's actually quite extraordinary. I'll see if I can dig it out on YouTube later.

No, I'm wrong - turns out Mike Smith didn't want his episodes repeated and wouldn't sign an agreement. The BBC are respecting his wishes even though he's dead. Seems a shame.

I'd say the presenters have too much power if that is the reason it wasn't shown.

I agree - but it's true, sadly!

I think all these 'bans' are unfair on performers (especially the one-hit-wonders), and on viewers who usually only get to see the 'credible' clips.

I sometimes wonder if they couldn't somehow edit the banned shows to find some way of showing JUST the performances without the links from presenters - TOTP2 executes this approach pretty well, with voiceovers from Mark Radcliffe (and Steve Wright on older ones).
It would mean we got much better continuity in the re-runs, and would be less harsh on those one-hit wonders who find their 15 minutes of fame banned!

I tend to agree Uncle but my natural instinct is to want to see all of these shows 'warts and all'

Ok there might have been some presenters along the way who have had problems of various kinds but the fact remains that they were part of musical history and you can't expunge that from human minds and memories even if you do try to do so from the actual repeated shows

I think that perhaps Mr Savile might be in a category of his own - and incidentally one of his own making - but as for the rest of them - is it really worth ruining the public enjoyment of what was and still is an iconic piece of history for the sake of an unfortunate dose of liberal political correctness Sad

I agree Ruddles. I don't want some sanctimonious employee of Auntie Beeb telling me what I shouldn't watch. In fact I have no qualms about seeing Savile introducing a TOTP or Jim'll Fix It. The BBC did after all employ him for 50 years.

The reason they don't show the Savile/DLT episodes and just cut out the presenters is in case any of the audience were abused that night, or if someone watching remembers being there and something happened. Which is ridiculous, as later episodes often feature clips from previous weeks and they don't cut those. It's a policy that's not been thought through.

As far as I am aware DLT was never accused of and certainly never convicted of molesting anyone at TOTP

His only conviction was for groping some woman who was over the age of 30 for about ten seconds more than 40 years ago and not anywhere near the set of TOTP so it would be an absolute miracle if anyone watching the show recalled anything untoward

There may of course be ways of accessing these missing episodes through modern on line methods - something which I am currently looking into Smile

Well, a few weeks ago, quite possibly we are now talking in months, the last of the 1989 Top Of The Pops episodes was shown on BBC 4 with that year's Christmas episode, which I passed up, not really wanting to look at tinsel & Christmas trees in the middle of summer! I have a question. Why have we still not seen any of the 1990s shows shown on BBC 4? I was certainly looking forward to revisiting the 1990s. Is it going to happen? Please someone tell me it is.

The TOTP repeats always take a break during the Proms and I heard both The Story of 1990 and The Story of 1991 documentaries have been made but delayed slightly due to coronavirus. So I'm hoping the repeats will resume in the next couple of weeks.

TOTP 1990s starts this coming Friday 2nd October on BBC Four. Big Hits at 8pm, then The Story of at 9pm, and a documentary by Geri from the Spice Girls at 10pm.

According to I-player tonight's editions are from 23/5/1991 & 6/6/1991. Why did they skip the 30/5/1991 edition?
