I wonder what happens next when his Radio 2 overnight show ends? There is only a certain amount of cover work available.

Just 2 more weekends for Richard left now.

Wonder if he will leave completely after these.

I note the Jane Muddridge petition failed.

So sad about that, though not surprised. Is Shennan noted for making sensible decisions? I certainly don't think so. I'm more convinced than ever that he's merely carrying on with Lesley Douglas' bad work, even though I remember it being one Bob Shennan that brought back Richard Allinson after Lesley Douglas scrapped his previous Saturday Afternoon show.
Yes I did sign the aforementioned petition.

As I said upthread (or maybe another one) Shennan wanted to keep Allinson and dump Vanessa but his hands are tied, and budgets are being slashed so much he has very little room for maneuver.

Well he couldn't do his own show if he were covering could he? Also as there are so few left maybe it was decided to use someone else on this occasion.

I like both Sara and Richard and I'm just grateful for having a breakfast show which I can actually listen to if only for this week Smile

I wasn't a fan of Richard but he would be preferable to Sara, sorry but she's not listenable at all for me, it's just like terrible R1 from the '90s and very SHOUTY Rolling Eyes

Just viewed the schedules following this weekend. Well the destruction of Radio continues apace. I wonder what the night shift & overnight lorry drivers think of having repeats after 3:00am, when they used to have Alex. Much as I like Sounds Of The 60s, 70s etc. I would feel most dissatisfied at hearing a recorded programme where I was once interacting with a live DJ.

Not forgetting of course the insomniacs. travellers etc and members of the 3.46 club who liked interactive radio whether by text, e-mail or tweet.
They are not going to get anything out of " a second chance to hear" or Morgan or Harris who I assume will be recorded. If the BBC has to save money did they do any research into listening patterns ? I suspect there are more potential listeners between 4.00 and 6.00 am so I dont't know why Janice and Alex were not moved until the 3.00 to 6.00 slot leaving the recorded stuff to the wee small hours ( apologies to the truckers and other all night workers but you cannot have everything)

Anneka Rice seemed genuinely unhappy this morning at Richard's departure .

He seemed upbeat this morning. The show has gone, but don't know if the broadcasters has left the building for good.

Haven't listened to this weekend's shows as yet but glanced at the playlist and a lot of Richard's personal favourites (and during the past few weeks).

I seem to think he ended his late night show years ago with the same Beatles track that he finished up this morning's show. I don't have a recording but remember the song.

Believe Richard has new agents so maybe they will get him a new gig somewhere else soon.

It would be a real shame if he has decided to give up broadcasting completely.

I don't think he will have decided to give up broadcasting Mark, this hasn't exactly been his decision...............

There was no intercation he's left Radio 2. When the announced was made it did say that he'll continue to cover shows on Radio 2.

I'm surprised you even think it's Richard's decision to quit and, as was said right at the beginning when the announcement was made, he will still do stand in when required.

What a waste. I really like Richard Allinson's style of broadcasting. My sleepless nights are just not going to be the same without him and Alex to listen to. I am very sad. Crying or Very sad

Just out of interest, Helen, which Beatles' song did he always play?

Hello Goodbye might be appropriate.

It was Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End that he finished with this morning and for some reason I think he did the same on his last late weeknight show.

He's always played a lot of Beatles tracks on his shows.

Ah, the excellent Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight from the greatest album ever made, Abbey Road . Very Happy Very Happy .

To their credit, Ken Bruce/Gary Bones sometimes play it as well.

The position Radio 2 are taking it seems the real radio DJ gets pushed out. I can't see Richard moving too a commercial station as the formats have changed and he wouldn't be allowed to provide the content. I think.Scott Mills will eventually move over to Radio 2 gradually like Sara and Jo did.

Having read some of the latest twitter posts about Richard I'm pretty sure he will continue as a broadcaster but not so sure whether that will be with the BBC.

Can't agree with Mark O-why couldn't Richard start a new career on a commercial radio station e.g. Smooth , Magic etc.

Good point LEE.

Indeed Richard could help raise the bar re bringing his BBC experience to a commercial radio station in 2014!

Angela if you Google Magic FM you should be able to listen online. I'll see if it's on my internet radio.

Shame it's Drivetime as that is one of the few R2 shows that I still listen to, the 2nd hour anyway.

Are there local Magic FMs or just the one?

But, will he be allowed to be himself? As he was on R2, if you know what I'm driving at.

I hope he will be able to LEE.

I can pick Magic up via Sky TV.

The press release confirms also he will continue to cover/work on BBC Radio 2 as appropriate.

So pleased he has got a new gig-hopefully he can carve out his own regular perm show going forward.

I hope they don't treat him like the DJ in this Tom Petty track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOd3tan59BE

Breakfast and Drive are slightly different with more of an open mic. Delivery will be different, but it's an interim place until they know what is happening with Foxy in December. I would expect when Foxy returns then Richard will continue at Magic with a further shuffle if daytimes.

The station has already introduced a few changes with an 80s show on a Friday and weekend changes.

erm, Magic is already national. It started in Yorkshire - the London version is just a Johnny-come-lately.
