Radio 4's Classic Serial
I've never seen the film of this with John Wayne but have heard what a good film it is so thought I give this a go ...glad I did,it's a fantastic production... so atmospheric I felt I was on the trail with them...
Coincidentally I'm going to see The Searchers,who took their name from this film, next Saturday night at a Sixties Gold night...looking forward to that!
Texas, 1848. When Comanches attack the Edwards family's settlement on the Texas plains, they kidnap two girls - seventeen year-old Lucy and ten year-old Debbie. So Amos Edwards sets out on the dangerous mission to recover his two nieces, with the help of his nephew Mart and a rag-tag bunch of searchers. Their epic mission will last six years. The concluding episode is at the same time next week.
Alan Le May's 1954 novel is a timeless work of western fiction and a no-holds-barred portrait of the real American frontier. It explores the fear and the hatred that underpinned the lives of both the white settlers and the Native Americans. And what emerges is a violent account of a creeping genocide, as one culture inevitably triumphs over the other.
John Ford's 1956 film, based on the novel, starred John Wayne as Ethan Edwards (called Amos in the book and radio adaptation). Ford's film was named the Greatest Western Movie of all time by the American Film Institute in 2008.

There is also a dramatisation of The Shootist (another John Wayne film) on Radio 4 with Brian Cox taking the lead role.

| Becky, The Searchers were one of my favourite bands from 1963-66. All their songs were good. However, it will be interesting to see how many of the original members are still in the band! Not many I suspect. |

I got dragged off to Buckley Tivoli in the early 80's by a former mate of mine who has since disappeared
I asked him why we were going there and he told me that there was some group on he had never heard of called 'The Searchers'
They were absolutely superb and I've never seen my former friend since - reckon he musn't have been impressed - or there again knowing him there was probably a woman involved somewhere along the line

I've always been a fan of theirs too,Schiz...as you say good songs!

Mike Pender is the first name that comes to my mind when I think of them but he left in 1985 and now tours under the name Mike Pender's Searchers. John McNally a founder member with Pender is still with them along with Frank Allen who replaced the original bass guitarist Tony Jackson in 1964. Spencer James has been with them since 1986 with Scott Ottaway joining them in 2010. |

So at least one of the originals is still there which is good, otherwise it would really be just a tribute band in effect.

I saw them in the 60s on a tour then in the mid 70s at a travel do where they were the cabaret, still very good. Enjoy the night Becky!

That's a great line up Becky. I heard Bill Kenwright mention that Gerry wasn't too well the other week.
I saw PJ Proby on his infamous boiler suit tour, can you remember that?

Thoroughly enjoyed these dramas ...excellent productions. I also enjoyed the documentary that graham posted about.
Had a great time at the concert on Saturday night although it was tinged with sadness when the compere announced at the beginning of the show that Brian Poole would not be appearing as he had suffered a stomach aneurysm a couple of weeks ago. He is however recuperating well which was good news. |
