Yesterday I did a lovely 12 mile walk with my group. It was a circular walk from Tring Station and took in plenty of short steep climbs including going up Ivinghoe Beacon. Ah yes, Ashridge park. Lots of deer!!!

A friend was telling me today that he and his family are going on holiday to Italy but one of his boys (about 5) is apprehensive of flying although he has done it before. Trying to placate him his dad told him that planes are just buses with wings.... Very Happy

That reminds me of a story I read in the Popham news magazine a few years ago. One of the pilots was telling a tale of how he and a few other fellow Pitts Special (small aerobatic biplane) pilots went on a flight in their aircraft to France. Whilst flying to their first (air)port of call, when one of them espied an airliner climbing out of Gatwick. They thought to themselves 'I bet he (airliner pilot) would rather be doing what we're doing, Still, I suppose someone has to fly the bus'!

I have been baiting slugs (which I hate) on the patio with wheat bran as they like it. It dries up their innards and kills them - sorry, that might sound cruel. Each morning the area has been cleared and I have suspected a fox.

However, last night my auto-camera video-ed a badger doing the deed. Mystery solved, and I shall continue my nightly operation. The only good slug is a dead slug as far as I am concerned.

I hope Chris Packham doesn't read this!

Well done to the badger! They are the bane of our lives as we have a lot of large hosta plants in our garden which of course the slugs love. Have you used nematodes? They have helped.

No Helen, I haven't tried nematodes. I used to sprinkle wildlife-friendly pellets, which weren't harmful to birds, hedgehogs etc, around my lupins which helped a bit and then I gave up on lupins altogether.

I haven't noticed slug damage on any of my other plants so far and at least I am preventing the eaten ones from increasing the population.

I'd recommend it. We used it probably 15 years ago then sort of forgot and rediscovered it a couple of years ago. You order it(it has a short shelf life as it's 'live') and then dilute and water round the plants you find have trouble with. It may be Suttons or Thompson and Morgan that we get it from.

There are two well establised badger setts within a few hundred yards of here and we regularly get anything up to fifteen badgers in the garden in the early hours

When the soil is frozen and they struggle to dig I feed them on broken up damp bread covered with Lyle's Golden Syrup and if they're lucky plain peanuts - they love it and in return they certainly keep the slugs under control

I've discoved that they're also very keen on jam butties so I would imagine there must be quite a few in Knotty Ash Laughing

I needed cheering up this morning after hearing some rather sad news and this helped enormously...

I always thought that Harry Secombe was a lovely human being and this little story, about him told on Desert Island Discs this morning by Julie Bentley, (Chief Executive of the Guide Association) confirms that he indeed was.

It is about a sad subject but Sir Harry's part in it is truly heartwarming.

If anyone would care to listen to the story it starts at 33mins-52 secs.

Becky, sorry to know that you are dealing with sad news. What a lovely gesture from Harry Secombe and he had such a wonderful voice. It was so pure and effortless and to my mind, and ear, a lot better than many tenors who are far more celebrated. Not naming names Wink

I agree about his voice.Of the things that Sir Harry did in later years I always liked to catch him, if I could, on Songs of Praise.

Reading this made me smile.

Brilliant Telegraph letter proves how predictive text can change everything

If you own a phone, you’ll understand the perils that the autocorrect function sometimes throws up when you’re texting.

David Lavelle from North Yorkshire in the UK had been helping his 16-year-old daughter to do her homework, when she received a rather profound text from her mother.
The text read "What do you want from life?" and David told the Telegraph in a letter that it made him and his daughter debate some of life's more important points like health, wealth and careers etc. That was all until the phone beeped again with another message five minutes later.
The second message was bemoaning predictive text... the mum had meant to say "What do you want from Lidl, not life!! Laughing

Good one, Becky Smile. I don't know WHY anyone uses predictive text! I tried it out of curiosity once and spent more time correcting words than if I had used non-predictive.

Reading this on Facebook (posted by my son) has just made me chuckle.

"Noel Gallagher on Desert Island Discs just said he doesn't drink or take drugs anymore but then in the next breath says that U2 are one of the greatest bands of all time. Well, one of them is a lie...."

Just hearing on the radio,Helen, that it's not been as busy as previous Black Fridays and saw this online...

Or perhaps they just didn't fancy being trampled underfoot or beaten up whilst trying for those bargains, which is what the TV footage & media photos of last year seemed to show. Those in the melee seemed to be no better than football hooligans. It was disgraceful to see. I wonder how many of those TV's etc that they were scrapping over ended up as damaged goods. IMHO this so called 'Black Friday' thing should be sent back to America, and why is it always the worst aspects of the USA that we have to bring over here.

I was walking past a church, near to my house, this morning and a group of local primary schoolchildren were coming out of it....probably been to a carol service. As they went past me one little lad stretched his hand (balled into a fist) out to me and said "Respect!" Laughing I reciprocated. Cool Very Happy

There was certainly no chance of seeing it down my way tonight, doubtful for tomorrow as well. Hope you manage to see it H.

I saw it last night at 18.57! Amazing to think what it is and how fast it moves.
It routed right over the top of our house. There was a good clear break in the sky. O/H took photos (Canon with a VERY large lens).

Will have another go tonight 18.04, there is a 4 min window compared to last night's 2 but cloud is covering just now.

It really cheered me after an otherwise horrible and traumatic day.

I was at the local garage putting air in my tyres when a nearby motorist offered me a can with about a litre of screen wash left in it. He said his reservoir was full so I asked didn't he want to store it in his boot like I always do. He said his boot was full, he had no room for it and I was welcome to it. How nice of him Smile .

As I was coming out of the front door this afternoon the postman was coming up the path. After he had given me the mail I went down the path after him. I said "I am following you"...He quickly replied "All the women do"

Had me chuckling for a few minutes. Laughing

Well it was yesterday but it still feels good today!

I'm still working my way through my Dad's bits and pieces and among some old reel to reel tapes there was one which was labelled 'ME' on the box. Well Dad had dance band in the late 40s and 50s and inside it said 'Band 1958 ish, tape iffy but playable'.

Well my reel to reel tape recorder emitted smoke the last time that I used it so it's been in the garage ever since. Not feeling very hopeful I decided to give it another try and it powered up! So seizing the moment I hooked it up to my mini disc recorder and played the tape whilst recording it on to the mini disc. I thought it may give up at any time.

The recording wasn't too bad but I was so glad that it worked, 50s type music. There was another tape with no label on it and that was Dad a lot more recently on the piano (he played accordion in the band) playing among other things 'As Time Goes By' which I've always loved. Don't think there are anymore but I'm going to check more carefully before throwing them away.

Long story but I really enjoyed 'playing' with old technology for a change, instead of just pressing a button on a remote control.

It was Becky!

I've a CD that Dad made of himself playing 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' which goes on forever, but he used to like playing bossa nova stuff, Girl From Ipanema, How Insensitive etc which I've always liked long before I heard Dad playing them. He had a Lowry organ and latterly a Clavinova electric piano which added all kinds of sound effects.
