If you've just tuned in you've missed 2 great hours of an elongated show, Johnnie is live which makes a difference. Still half an hour to go.

Hello Aitch,
I've heard most of it. I wonder why Elaine's got the day off. Is it really because of Glastonbury?

Yes I think it will be, as it's a much better lead into Glastonbury live than E Paige would have been. I've really enjoyed the show.

Me too. A fine show (as I've posted elsewhere) and at 1.00pm a welcome alternative to the awful Eeee Peeeee!

Five months since the last post! It seems not many here listen to JW's SOT70s.

I must admit I'm not too keen myself, especially as he, until recently, played nothing but the Eagles, T Rex and Blondie. However, today's show was very good, with fewer chart singles than usual and more album tracks and lesser played songs, like the excellent What A Difference A Day Made by Esther Phillips and a nice song by a band called Blue which I'd not heard before. Hope this theme continues but don't hold your breath.

I listen every week when I can and I think JW is stifled by the lack of opportunity to play a wider range of music from other decades. I really miss his old shows and my collection of music doesn't grow very fast these days.

Well we have SOTS which plays far too many obscure B sides often when the A sides were not even hits and then Sounds Of The Seventies where the menu seems often to be restricted to a limited range of artists as Schiz rightly points out

What is it about the current crop of BBC producers which means that they simply appear incapable of providing a representative and accurate sample of music across their respective chosen decades? Mad

I feel the same Angela. I think I asked Johnnie if he missed playing newer music when he did his question part of his 'Audience' tour a few years ago. I can't remember his exact answer (you gave the questions in during the interval), but I got the impression that he didn't really. Shame.

Well I definitely miss him playing a wider range, in fact I still miss him being on the radio in his other slots. Certain other presenters could learn a lot from his style of interviewing people too. Especially the ones who answer their own questions, or talk over the other person's reply.

And it was nice to hear The Sutherland Brothers' 1972 original of Sailing, later covered by Rod 'I only do covers and pretend they are mine' Stewart.

Didn't he say at the time that it deserved to be sung better? I bought the original single and it was nice to hear it on the radio again as you hardly ever do!

Very Happy
Well you live and learn! I never knew that was a cover!

I've just listened to the original from the Sutherland Brothers...it's nice but I have to say I love the Rod Stewart version.

It's a lovely song.

Today's SOT70s was superb, so many good songs which you don't hear much: WOLD, A Thing Called Love, I'm Doing Fine, and from Band On The Run: 1985.

Also a good interview with Phil May of The Pretty Things (more a 60s band of course) and Bowie's version of Don't Bring Me Down.

And as a bonus, there were no songs from The Eagles and the appalling Blondie.

Agree today's show was a good one. I had almost no awareness of The Pretty Things until hearing this: they were obviously a decent band and as influential as they were overlooked - a rather sad story, I thought. Shows just how much luck there is in it!

Nice to hear two album tracks on SOT70s making a change from the non stop singles and chart hits: Mr Big by Free from the excellent 1970 album Fire And Water.
And then Down By The Seaside from Led Zep's excellent double album Physical Graffiti.

And for once no Eagles or Blondie!

Note to producers: The Who's Pinball Wizard was from 1969.

The usual mix of Christmas music on today's edition which must have been pre recorded as no interaction between Sally Traffic and Johnnie. Although I've heard most numerous times before it cheered me up while doing Christmas preparations!

I agree Helen. It was a great SOT70s. Was nice to hear Dana's It's Going To Be A Cold Cold Christmas and Mud's Lonely This Christmas which aren't played much. And I love Greg Lake's song. Shame he played Slade and Wizzard though, songs played daily on radio and in the shops.

I also enjoyed Smokie's If You Think You Know How To Love Me. And the Joe Walsh song which I don't think I've heard before.

Enjoyed today's edition especially Richard White talking about his new book Come Together, which is about the relationship between Lennon and McCartney in the 70s.

Yes, I enjoyed that interview too. And I've always believed, as RW said, that it was Allen Klein and not Yoko who split The Beatles up.

I'll have to listen again to Angela. I didn't check RT but presumed it wouldn't be on due to Glastonbury as per usual..........

Just checked and he had Charles Esten from Nashville on who I would like to hear. Johnnie said he was going to the Nashville concert at the Albert Hall a couple of weeks ago I think.
