It seems the only prom that the John Wilson Orchestra is performing is Kiss Me Kate on Saturday 2nd August. It is on Radio 3 only but is set to be televised in December, over Christmas I'm guessing.

I'll miss his usual concert in late August that is televised usually a week or so later.

I had forgotten about this until I saw your post,Helen. I blame it on the fact that I had unexpected visitors rather than a senior moment. Wink

I am now recording it,thanks...

I can catch up with what I missed on Listen Again.

Radio 3's Composer of the Week has been Cole Porter to tie in with the Prom.

I forgot until around 6.30 as well, so I had to phone my Mum to remind her too!

I've tickets for his tour in November and it's Cole Porter's Hollywood music so I expect some from tonight will feature in that.

H

PS Thanks for the composer of the week info Ian!

It was another fantastic concert last night and I met the man himself afterwards!

According to the back of the programme Sky Arts are recording the Albert Hall concert for transmission over Christmas, so you look your best Eileen you could be on screen!

That's wonderful Helen, what a magical evening you had! Thank you for the tip about the recording for TV. We have seats in the front row of the stalls, so maybe ...

How amazing to get them so late Eileen!

It was all superb but I particularly enjoyed the overture at the start with so many of the songs. Made me think of the much missed Melodies For You as so often they began with an overture of some sort which I do like.

It was a great evening Helen. We had seats in the front row of the stalls. They were a little to the side but we found that the seats swivelled so we had a very good view without getting a crick in the neck.

The singers' mikes were distorting their voices a bit during the first half so unless we knew the words we missed some of the lyrics but they were corrected for the second half. You'd expect more from the Albert Hall but I have heard it's been a problem in the past.

John Wilson is wonderful and the orchestra is sensational isn't it?

They are taking bookings for next year already!

Glad you enjoyed it Eileen.

I thought the same about the singers at the Bridgewater Hall concert and it did improve during the evening. The orchestra are just superb!

Which concerts are they taking bookings for? I know there are 2 at the Sage in Gateshead on Sunday afternoons, 1 in January that are to do with Classic FM.

Helen, at present there is the Albert Hall date in November 2015 which will presumably be the last performance of a tour similar to this year. I don't know the theme of the concert yet.

Thank you for the Graham Norton info. I shall iPlayer ASAP Smile.

I have just listened to Graham's interview with John Wilson and noticed that he was quick to stop John from plugging the Sky Arts TV showing Laughing, so thanks for that info Helen!

I was sitting in the front row of the stalls a little to the right when viewed from the stage and I was wearing a long-sleeved pink shirt with a black waistcoat. Oh, and I wear specs.

Eileen,

Don't know if you are interested, but the tour for next year is Gershwin in Hollywood and I've had an alert from Bridgewater Hall that the tickets go on pre sale tomorrow and general from Friday morning. I'll be booking tomorrow!

Helen, I have just booked for the Albert Hall - down in the arena this time as the stalls are already almost fully booked apart from the back rows.

I don't think I have ever booked for anything 11 months in advance. My goodness, I was lucky this year!

They are much earlier this year Eileen. We booked in March for this last concert and the was after an email from Bridgewater Hall that tickets were on pre sale the following day, the same as happened for next year.

We've got 2nd row circle tickets that face the stage, that we like. We were downstairs in the stalls for The Seekers 50th tour last May, 7 rows back which I like, but O/H prefers the circle.

Something to look forward too!

… and now mine have arrived too Very Happy

Helen, I couldn't spot us in the front row of the stalls but I noticed while watching the Cole Porter concert that there were lots of shots of faces in the arena so maybe we'll be visible during the Gershwin one.

I was glad the sound was so good for the transmission and that it was only the hall mikes which were not too good (in the first half anyway). Lovely music, great singers.

I looked hard for you as well Eileen!

After your earlier comments I was surprised that the sound was so good, it must have been the mics in the hall or they've cleaned up the recording. Colin no doubt could tell us if that's possible to do afterwards.

I missed the bits from John himself and there wasn't an encore as there was in our concert. Can't for the life of me think what it was now though!

I hope you have a lovely evening Helen! We are going to the Albert Hall on Monday 16th where I think it will be recorded as last year. We are sitting in the arena area this time so might be visible when it's transmitted - presumably around Christmas.

You're in for a treat Eileen as last night's concert was superb! I was so pleased as I didn't enjoy either of this year's proms and worried that this was the formula that John was following.

The sound once again was much better during the 2nd half, you had trouble making out the words, too much sound??? I did notice someone from the audience having a word with someone next to the stage (they were moving a grand piano during the interval).

The son of my Mum's close friend is the artistic director at the Bridgewater Hall. I've never met him, but I may mention it to Mum and I know she'll pass it on. Unless it's only to do with the JWO? You'd think they would know the settings that they need to use.

There wasn't any mention of a recording but I think that happened when I got John's autograph after the show last year.

I thought it was absolutely lovely, Helen! The sound was much better than last year though I couldn't always hear Louise Dearman's lyrics. Matt Ford was terrific and I DID enjoy him going all Georges Guetary during "'S Wonderful" Very Happy

It was also very good to hear some lesser-known Gershwin songs. Altogether a great evening's entertainment and I am looking forward to the TV transmission.
