I was really sad to hear about the demise of this very talented artist at an indecently young age
Of course everyone remembers her for her biggest hit record 'It's My Party' but as far as I can see she was a far more serious artist who was banging the feminist equality drum at least ten years before most other women in the Western world
A perfect illustration is her track 'You Don't Own Me' which if you listen to the lyrics puts her well ahead of the 'bra burning' brigade - and quite apart from that it's just such a superb trach ahead of it's time
In my view she contibuted a huge amount towards sixties music and from that point of view she'll be sadly missed _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I have to admit the feminist side of her character largely passed me by,ruddles, but I loved her songs. It's My Party is a classic from that era.
68 is young these days.
R.I.P
You mention You Don't Own Me which was a hit in 1963. Yesterday listening to Manx Radio I heard this song, that was a hit for Sandy Posey in 1966!!
Compare and contrast the lyrics!!
Born A Woman
It makes no difference
If you're rich or poor
Or if you're smart or dumb
A woman's place in this old world
Is under some man's thumb
And if you're born a woman
You're born to be hurt
You're born to be stepped on
Lied to, cheated on
And treated like dirt
Ah, if you're born a woman
You're born to be hurt
A woman's lot is to give and give
And go on giving
A woman's got to love and lose
And go on living
Well, I was born a woman
I didn't have no say
And when my man finally comes home
He makes me glad it happened that way
Because to be his woman
No price is too great to pay
Yes, I was born a woman
I'm glad it happened that way
Oh, I was born a woman
I'm glad it happened that way

Sandy Posey- Ah yes wasn't she the one who did 'The Single Girl' which sent out fairly mixed messages to say the least
Whilst I've never heard the 1966 cover version I go back to a conversation on another thread a little while ago when the majority view was that rarely are cover versions better than the original - and then we had vast numbers of tracks mentioned which were the exception to the rule _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I totally missed this post Ruddles, and just heard Paul O'Grady say that she had died and played 'You Don't Own Me'.
Liked most of her songs.
