Rumour has it that Alex Lester is on his way to BBC Radio Oxford for a daily show.

Hopefully they can bring back Richard Allinson as his replacement.

Alex would be a great loss - I hope you're right Mark but quite frankly I can't see it Smile

I hope Alex isn't going, but if he does I can't see that happening. It would probably be yet another so-called celebrity who knows nowt about music! Sad

It's inevitable that he'll soon go the way of Richard Allinson. Trouble is, if the rumours are true about BBC Local Radio (in the light of the current Licence Fee review) he might not have many places to go to.

That will be a real shame. Why do they know the cost of everything and the value of nothing? Sad

The trouble is that the crowd in power have tried, for decades, to dismantle the BBC and remove its PSB (public sector broadcasting) ethos in favour of a free-market broadcasting system. Given another term in office, there's a very real fear that Cameron and co. will implement Thatcher's wishes, given that she hated the BBC (one of the reasons I support it).

Lots of people working in BBC Local Radio - whether on staff or freelance contract - fear the worst if the right-wing establishment gets its way and the BBC's local/regional broadcasting obligations are turned over to the free market in whole or in part.

There is no confirmation he is leaving Radio 2 let alone going to BBC Oxford. He could still host his weekend shows. Tim Smith does a show on a Saturday and continues on Radio 2. BBC Local are looking for talent.

He's definitely going to BBC Oxford - 1pm, 13th March.

But Tim Smith plays only a support role on the Steve Wright Show at Radio 2, and he's on a freelance contract.

Possibly only Fridays and someone else is taking over Phil Gayle Mon - Thurs as he's leaving?

The schedules are there for the next two to three weeks. Looks like Nick Piercey is doing the Radio Oxford 1300 to 1600 slot Monday to Thursday.

I doubt that Alex would leave Radio 2 to do just one slot a week on Radio Oxford. Much more likely is that Alex is looking to top up his income; dropping from 15 hours a week to just nine must have entailed some loss of income.

Rob.
