I was given an Android tablet at Christmas but I don't know if it's me or what but I'm totally underwhelmed with it. In fact it annoys me!
I can get a refund up to the end of the month but I wonder if I'm missing something vital that would change my mind over it.
I NEVER play games, don't like Facebook and haven't used a Kindle to read books. I don't have a smart phone and can't see me wanting one either. I've never been into iPods, (I had a cheap mp3 player which I left on an aircraft and didn't bother to replace).
I love my laptop but use it as a desktop substitute so wonder if I'm just not into portable technology?
Any thoughts?

I bought an iPad and I must admit we only use it for Solitaire in the bathroom! Mrs SF browses Ebay on it too using our wireless internet but other than that it's pretty useless...
I've been told I slipped up buying this iPad because it won't connect to the internet if I'm away from my wireless set up. If that's true, I wish I'd been told this at PC World.
When I'm at our other place up the coast, as yet without internet, I do use my IPhone to check eBay, emails etc.. but it's not great being so small.
I wouldn't be without my iPod though! one of the best things I've ever had. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I wish I had bought one. I dithered about and by the time I decided on an iPod Classic they had been withdrawn and discontinued. She who hesitates is lost.....and I do it all the time. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

It needs the means to connect to the internet, such as a convenient WiFi connection (a "hotspot", of which there are now many in pubs, hotels, rail stations, shops, restaurants, etc) or by tethering into a mobile phone in order to use its 3G or 4G dta connection.
When we're away from home, such as at our caravan in north Norfolk, I take a mobile wifi ("MiFi") dongle which I bought in Argos for £39.99 which picks up a 3G signal and then acts as a WiFi base station in order that I can hook my Mac laptop into it, our iPhones and my wife's iPad. She uses her iPad all the time now in place of a horrible Samsung notebook; she uses it for email, messaging, iPlayer (etc), photos, iTunes music playlists, video, ebook reading, online shopping (Next, Debenhams, etc etc!!) and more. She can even edit her videos with it and upload direct to YouTube. I've set it up so that she can view the screen in HD on our TV, wirelessly.
There are iPad models with built-in 3G, but of course you need a mobile data account in order to take an advantage of it. I use an EE pay-as-you-go top-up for it. |

I bought an iPad last year only to store all my photos and to show them easily to other people. I have yet to explore going on line with it but when I go away in Feb for a week's holiday (escaping all my many duties ) I shall have plenty of playtime as the hotel has free WiFi throughout the building. |

I often find that the speeds offered are rarely fast enough to do much - certainly not for streaming iPlayer, etc. , or for taking advantage of iCloud synching as online backup. A family hotel we stayed in up in the Andalucian hills last Summer did have a wifi base station on each of its three floors, which was a novelty (and very handy), because they're often not very good. |

I think that's my problem Angela, I don't 'get it'. I do feel that I should have a 'mobile' thing in case I have to spend time at parents or if I myself am ill.
This one (a Hudl 2) only connects to my internet or a wifi hotspot but I'm not someone who takes things out an about with me!
Perhaps I should keep it and try and remove some of the cr*p that comes with it. I suppose the top and bottom of it I can't really be bothered with it. I'm glad I didn't get an iPad though despite going to the Apple store several times and discussing them, something held me back from buying one.

Apple doesn't install much crap, to be honest Helen. The apps that are instead are all basic ones - mail, web browse, photos, maps, calculator, video, iTunes, text editor, messaging, etc etc. All the rest you install according to need. I have apps that calculate the space required to store different professional video format files and also a digital film clapperboard! There are millions of specialised apps to suit the most specialised jobs. It's great. And they can be synched with other devices, like our iPhones. All the info is shared between your devices if you want it to be. It depends on your need, but of course if there's no need then there's no need...
My 87-year-old Dad looks at my wife's iPad and is always curious. He asked "What can you do with that?" so when we were last down with them she handed it to him and said "Try it". Within no time he was opening apps, using multi-gesture moves to zoom in and out, etc. He wanted to order something from Argos so she helped him to find the Argos app and he found it much easier than the website (he still doesn't "get" websites). Then he had the idea of downloading audiobooks so I pointed him at the Audible.com app and he was away!! He's wondering if the iPad would be better than his cumbersome 18-month-old Toshiba laptop PC.
I guess it's all down to what you want from an internet-connected device, but hand an iPad to any child and he/she knows instinctively what to do, which is exactly what good product design is all about. It also explains why the sale of laptop and desktop computers is now plummeting.
My wife loves her iPad and wouldn't be without it, whereas I prefer my laptop Mac at home and in the office largely because I need access to the more specialised applications required for my work.
It's my dad's birthday in February and my mum has hinted at what he might like.............. |

I doubt I'd ever have an iPhone Colin unless they make the Nokia type obselete and I don't have or want iTunes which was one of the reasons I decided against the iPad.
My laptop sits on my desk and I think has only been moved once in the 2 years that I've had it so I'm wondering if I'm just not a 'mobile' type of person?
I'll see how I get on with it during the next week or so before I make the decision on what to do with it but it just sits there looking at me and that annoys me somehow! I think I have the feeling that I 'should' have one but don't really want one..............

Wish now I'd taken it back for refund to Tesco before Jan 31 deadline!
Started to like it a bit but now it's more than half full of stuff I can't remove. Everytime you turn it on something else updates and takes up more of the precious data! Out of 16GB there is only 7GB of space...........and I've not put anything on it apart from a few apps.

Hudls are awful - very basic. Why not just take it back, ask for a refund on the grounds that it keeps crashing and that it's not "fit for purpose"? They never check and it simply gets added to returns stock and sold out in bulk to jobbies like market traders etc.
My wife used to work at the HQ of a major catalogue retail brand (no names) and the returns stock for which there's no agreement with suppliers ends up back in a central warehouse for selling on to traders. I can't imagine the Hudls are any different. |

It's not so much that it's basic Colin, it's a Hudl 2 not the original one that came out over a year ago, just that it's full of c*ap that can't be removed. It works fine and has got very good write ups.
One of the apps, Blinkbox books closed down today (you can read stuff until next week) and then you have to go to Kobo to read what you have downloaded. I've only a couple of titles that were obtained with a voucher that came with it the Hudl. The annoying thing is that you are going to be unable to remove an app that no longer will have any purpose just taking up space! I'm wondering if that would be means for a refund?
I wonder if the Blinkbox Movies and Music will go the same way and also be unable to remove?
Watched some online craft type courses which I already had on my large laptop, but were much easier to watch from the comfort of an armchair and could just put it next to where you were working.

All tablets have a certain number of pre-installed "locked" apps - even the iPads have a few Apple apps that you can't get rid of, but thankfully only a small few. I haven't felt the need to delete the ones on iPad or iPhone other than the games apps which are not needed. I guess that's the benefit of paying a higher retail price. Usually the pre-installed apps on other devices are there because they're sponsored.
If you want your money back I'd seriously do what I suggest and say that it's intermittently faulty. They really don't bother to check as they have neither the time nor the inclination. |

Seeing as how Tesco sold off Blinkbox last year - before you purchased the Hudl - perhaps you could return it on the grounds they sold you content that they knew would no longer be available? I can't think of the technical term, sorry! |

That's what I was thinking Ian. There was a booklet of vouchers supposedly valid until August 2015 then all of a sudden you get an email saying you have to use the £10 (for each app) credit within 2 weeks and you have a week or so longer to read whatever you have bought.
There are 3 or 4 separate movie apps that can't be removed, and the same for music. The all add up to a fair bit of space on the tablet.

Yes, it's "Unfit for the purpose for which it is described" or something quite close . Yes, I agree - that's another one that could be tried.
The main thing, here, Helen is that if you perceive that the device isn't doing what you were led to believe it would do then they really won't quibble it. Honestly! The staff at Tesco or any other mainstream retailer just can't be bothered. I'd return it now. As soon as they contest the return it costs them time, and the small resale margins on the Hudl simply don't warrant it. |

Heard the contents of your e mail today on the JV Show Helen
I didn't think that you really got a proper answer and I rather get the feeling that the so called 'on line' expert isn't really that much of an expert - still I expect she's being paid big money _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

No I'm not much better informed although Jeremy did I think try to help by adding something at the end. I'll listen again and see if I missed anything else.
Must admit I hadn't thought about where it is all stored ie in Europe or the US.

Not as a guest on a Radio 2 show she won't be (whoever she is).
By the way, what was the question Helen? As you know, I gave up on R2 daytime over a year ago so I'm in the dark. |

Must admit I didn't think she would have been paid although Jeremy did refer to her as 'Radio 2's computer expert' so maybe she is on a retainer of some kind? I haven't heard her before but it sounds like she's been on before.
Colin one of the topics was about the cloud and what it was, the costs etc. I've not used it or really paid too much attention but it was something I have been thinking about for various reasons.
I emailed and just said I'd recently got a tablet and was thinking I would probably need to use it but wondered about security and costs.
It was a genuine request when I heard Jeremy and Ken discussing the show earlier on.

Ah right. Actually, the whole point of Cloud-based operation is that you shouldn't have to think about it. Once set up it just happens - and all you need is an internet connection either through Wi-Fi or 3G/4G.
Anybody who uses Google Drive for online storage of calendar, docs and other apps data is using "the Cloud". Apple users like me have the benefit of using their iCloud facility free of charge for storage up to 5GB. I find it really useful because our iPhones, my wife's iPad and my three Mac computers all synchronise their data (manually selectable) via the cloud, so calendars, notes, docs, emails and even browser bookmarks are shared automatically. So, for instance, I can view an incoming email on my Mac laptop and reply to it on my iPhone. It just happens.
For you, consider using Google Drive. It works in exactly the same way.
I can't imagine Jeremy Vine managing this topic - his technical knowledge is appalling but he always manages to blag his way through!!
PS: The servers are spread all over the world and although data is usually written to the nearest "server farm" initially, it's usually synchronised with many of the others very quickly. Apple uses a global company called Akamai and I think Google has its own network - and it's massive given the storage requirements for YouTube, etc. Server farms are absolutely massive!
We have one in Milton Keynes but its location is not public knowledge. |

It wasn't the setting up of it that was being discussed but what it was and why you would or would not want to use it.
Actually I didn't find a problem in the way Jeremy handled it, he'd had an Apple computer fail on him but hadn't lost a thing due to I presume a form of the cloud (he did say what it was but I can't remember). It was more about using cloud and/or external hard drives and the whys and wherefores of the laws that applied to the country where your data was being held.
Listen back Colin if you're interested, it was the last 25 minutes or so of the show.

It's easier than hard drives because they have to be connected (not practical for mobile devices and not always preferable for others) and you really don't have to think about backups any more. Having multi-device access to your files is a major bonus, too. I use the cloud for storing and accessing all our accounts files - and they're encrypted too.

Anyone use their tablets for reading books?
Is it normal to get messages implying they know when and guessing where you are reading? I had to switch from Blinkbox to Kobo to finish the book I had from Blinkbox when they closed down week ago, but it keeps showing that it knows when I'm reading and where.
I'm not getting paranoid but does Kindle do this? Blinkbox didn't.
I've finished the book so thinking about uninstalling the app and getting Kindle instead.

I read mistly "real" books as opposed to ones on tablets because they're easier on my eyes late at night, but when I do it's on an iPad using Apple's iBooks app. However, you won't have problems with Kindle because it's an Amazon product and therefore tied in closely to Amazon as a book vendor. The Amazon Kindle Fire is supposed to be very good. |

Sorry I should have said I'd be using the Kindle app on the Android Hudl. I had Blinkbox vouchers so thought I'd use them up.
I'm not totally sold on e-books and I'm not sure I like Kobo but wondered what anyone else used. It annoyed me that they keep asking you to review the book.

That's a bit weird. I've never had anything like that on my Kindle.
I got a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 to read books and comics but spent a year messing with apps like Facebook and Tetris - so I reset to factory defaults and now use it purely for books. But it's never sent me messages about where I am and where! |

Thanks Ian. I'll try Kindle and get rid of Kobo. I only used it as they took over Blinkbox and I still had a book to read on it.

I don't like reading text-only eBooks but where they come into their own is when there's embedded multimedia content. |

Sorry, I meant "that's what Amazon does". I've bought several things from Amazon in the last couple of weeks and I'm being hassled to review the quality of packaging, speed of delivery, etc. |

It's Amazon's algorithm's that I find annoying. Say I look at a fridge, then buy one, I'm not that likely to want to buy another a week later am I? Yet that's what they keep sending me e-mails about! |
