I am so looking forward to this. I read all the books years ago and saw the Robin Ellis version which I quite enjoyed although it wasn't close enough to the books. In fact Winston Graham had issues with the adaptation, particularly over making Demelza into a prostitute when, in fact, she was a grubby urchin whom Ross mistook for a young boy on first meeting her.

Some filming was done at Botallack which is so spectacular with the engine houses on the dramatic cliffs. I was there only two weeks ago - sigh.

Sunday 8th March 9pm BBC1 is Part 1 of 8.

I remember the first series and really enjoyed it, but I've never read the books Eileen. I'll watch the new one as well.

I assume we're going to see and hear more "Cornish" characters speaking with Swindon, Bristol and Bath accents just like they did in "Jamaica Inn" recently!

I wasn't overly impressed with the original Poldark,Eileen, but will give this new version a go..

I loved Aiden Turner in Being Human and Desperate Romantics but in the trailers I've seen for this Poldark he doesn't look (imo) rugged enough to take on the character of Ross Poldark, played in the original by Robin Ellis ......we'll see.

From what I can remember I didn't much care for the character of Demelza ..a sullen individual if ever there was one.

Looking back at the original cast I'm reminded that the lovely Ralph Bates played the not so lovely George Warleggan.

There are certainly a lot of trailers for this at the moment...

Judging by the vibes emanating from my other half, I would say I will very probably be watching it.

I don't remember Demelza as being sullen. Perhaps she was a bit off sometimes during her transformation from wild child to a loving supportive wife for Ross.

I am intrigued by the casting of Jack Farthing as George Warleggan as I last saw him as daft Freddie Threepwood in Blandings Very Happy.

That is obviously the part of the character that has stuck with me over the years,Eileen. Very Happy

Will look at the new production through fresh eyes and an open mind.

(Come to think about it I perhaps didn't see the previous production through to the end!) Very Happy

I've been listening to,and enjoying, a series of short stories this week, on Radio 4 Extra, by Winston Graham.

The penultimate one is an extract from Poldark....

Ross and Demelza

An extract from the first of the historical novels set in Cornwall, Ross Poldark. Ross takes his new wife and sometime serving girl and ward, out to see the pilchard harvest.

.... with the last being called ....

Meeting Demelza

Shortly before his death in 2003, Winston Graham wrote a story for the Cornish magazine, Scryfa. He recounts an imaginary meeting with his best-loved and most spirited creation

.

There has also been a repeat of an adaptation of Marnie by Graham on the same station

It's 1961 and blonde and stunning Marnie Elmer poses as a secretary in order to steal from her employers and fund her mother's existence in Torquay. But she's yet to meet handsome company director, Mark Rutland, whose pursuit of her will ultimately lead to her downfall.

I can't quite remember, Becky, but I have a vague memory of something happening between Elizabeth and Warleggan.

BTW, I do like the casting of brother and sister Francis and Verity. When I see them in profile I am struck by the similarity of their facial features.

Becky, I hadn't seen the latest episode when I last posted but I have just iPlayered it.

I haven't become so tearful over a TV programme since heaven knows when.

It sounds about right,Eileen, something happening between Elizabeth and Warleggan...for financial reasons. Poor Elizabeth.

Now you say it I have just pictured Francis and Verity, together, and you're right they do have similar profiles! I read elsewhere that the actor who plays Francis is American...I would never have guessed.

I am so sorry for spoiling it for you..... I was willing Ross to find poor Francis.. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

It's OK Becky, you didn't spoil it for me. I was quite prepared for Francis to not survive but I didn't expect to be so affected by it. It was very well written and acted, I thought.

Great casting ..the actor who played him did a beautiful job.

He's certainly changed from hero to villain (no amount of taking his shirt off Rolling Eyes will alter that!) these last few weeks whereas the lovely Dwight has been a hero throughout.. Cool

A toe curling moment, for me,when Ross emerged shirtless from the sea in the first episode of this series.. Rolling Eyes

I could hardly believe my eyes..it was like an advert. The BBC are milking the furore surrounding Ross's physique (since the sythe incident) for all it's worth.
