A couple of shops that I go in regularly check all notes, visibly,or forgery. I always feel a frisson of disquiet waiting for the outcome of the check.

Up to now all has been well but it got me wondering what happens if you unknowingly try to pass a forged note? Do you just have to write it off as a loss?

A few years ago I recall a business colleague who happened to be the manager of a former well known Building Society taking me out for lunch and withdrawing £100 from his own cash machine - after we'd eaten the meal and he came to pay the restaurant scanned the notes and told him that they were fake Embarassed

Can it really get any more embarrassing than that Smile

I ended up paying which gave a whole new meaning to the well known phrase 'there's no such thing as a free lunch'

He did later reimburse me - and I didn't charge interest Laughing

Absolutely Becky - I don't think I've ever seen anyone so red faced Smile

A few months ago I heard a radio feature saying that up to 40% of pound coins might well be forgeries but it seems that nobody is remotely bothered

As long as people can spend them then what the hell - I guess the forgers are simply trying to help out the Government with a bit of their own brand of 'quantitive easing' Smile
