Just heard the Rev Rog say he's quitting Sunday Half Hour at Easter!! Yet another nail in the coffin that's tearing apart the tone of the only decent part of the schedule. First 100 Best Tunes gets axed, then Melodies For You gets a new shape, sound and host, then poor old Sherry Morley dies and now this revelation. Who are they gonna get to replace Roger I wonder? Probably Diane Louise Jordan or some other such ghastly TV has-been. No one can say the prayers at the end with the same degree of sincerity as Roger.

This is disastrous news. Can't he be persuaded to stay on? It's only half a bloody hour a week!

Very sad news. Looks like the BBC are trying to pension off these people, except Morley wasn't pensioned off and had to retire for reason which we know now.. It's the first time I heard ex Blue Peter Diana Louise Jordan being mentioned. Was she in your mind?

Russell Brand does a good evening vespers it has been said! Laughing

No 'tis sad that Rog is moving on, though presumably there are others than can replace him. No one is irreplacable after all.

That's a shame, I don't listen to Sunday half hour but I always enjoy Roger's pause for thought slots.
He's a lovely chap, I wish him a happy retirement if that is what he is doing.

I usually catch the last five minutes or so - it puts me in a better mood for having to go back to work the following morning. As Lady says, another nail in the coffin.... Rolling Eyes

She's got previous - she did the weekend early show on R2 for a while, so may well be itching for a comeback! Sorry to hear Roger Royle's going - he's a genuinely funny chap.

Marvellous article in Private Eye this week about Sheridan Morley, actually, where they point out most of the tributes since his death came from people who've just sacked him, Lesley D included.

DLJ has done religion before. Things like Songs of Praise. Exactly the sort of irritating TV numpty la Douglas would go for.

I'm still not sure if SHH is going along with Roger at Easter? Can't quite believe they'd axe that too and so soon after YHBT.

To my mind though the most important qualification for succeeding Rog, assuming the programme is to stay, is to be another priest, and a similarly avuncular one at that. Can't think of any though am sure there have perhaps been one or two likely candidates from the Pause For Thought slot.

I can't begin to imagine the important prayer part of the show delivered by anyone other than the clergy. To have DLJ or some other TV person doing it would just sound wrong and insincere. Part of the joy of SHH is the knowledge that the majority of it is basically a sermon from a religious leader and not a few producer-scripted links handed to someone with a nice voice from telly who occasionally goes to church!

Roger Royle left once before (only to return- obviously!) I think he was replaced by Rev Ernie Rea who was head of BBC religious broadcasting until about a year ago.

IIRC the Head of Religion appoints the presenter for this show, not Douglas.

I'm not totally surprised to hear this sad news Lady B. Only on Saturday my Mum told me that he's giving up writing a weekly column in one of the magazines she takes, Woman's Weekly, again at Easter as it just said there that he was retiring.

I wonder about his pause for thought series as well.

If Roger is giving up his magazine column as well that does suggest he is retiring. I shall miss him a lot but I suppose the dear fellow can't go on forever.

BELOW IS THE BBC PRESS RELEASE:

The Reverend Canon Roger Royle has announced that he is to retire from BBC Radio 2's Sunday Half Hour programme.

Roger has presented the weekly show of hymns and prayers for 16 years.

He says: "I'm very grateful for the many opportunities I've been given especially being able to spend almost every Sunday evening with my listeners for the past 16 years but I have decided the time has come for me to take life that little bit easier and let someone else care for my listeners. I am sure some of them will miss me but I am sure some of them will be ironing the flags!"

Lesley Douglas, Radio 2 Controller, says: "For almost two decades of Sunday Half Hour, Roger Royle has been there for Radio 2 listeners, and for the nation.

"He has celebrated with us, entertained us, and has provided solace in the difficult times. He will be missed for his unique role in the life of Radio 2 listeners every Sunday evening and will be a very hard act to follow."

Roger's last show will be on Sunday 8 April (Easter Day).

Roger will continue to contribute to Pause For Thought on Wake Up To Wogan.

Reverend Canon Roger Royle was ordained in the Church of England in 1962 and served his first curacy at St Mary's, Portsea, Portsmouth.

During his career he served as Conduct and Senior Chaplain of Eton College. In 1979, Roger left to become a non-stipendiary curate in the Diocese of Southwark. He also worked for Save the Children.

Roger's career in media is both varied and busy. He has presented his own television series for Southern Television and Ulster Television and been a regular presenter of Songs Of Praise on BBC One.

Roger regularly contributes to Pause For Thought on Wake Up To Wogan. He has also presented Good Morning Sunday and A Royle Tour.

Roger has written a regular column for Woman's Weekly, and a number of books: A Few Blocks From Broadway, Royle Exchange, To Have And To Hold, Picking Up The Pieces, and a book on Mother Teresa.

In 1990 he was honoured by the Archbishop of Canterbury with a Lambeth Degree in recognition for his work in the media.

Roger is also Honorary Canon to Southwark Cathedral.

Sunday Half Hour, Radio 2, Sundays at 8.30-9pm.

God forbid! ... (Hey, did you see what I did there?!)

I still haven't forgiven Roger for leaving GMS and having old Crackerjack inflicted on us. If history repeated itself...

Now then, there is quite a nice Irish chap who does the Pause For Thoughts on Wogan's prog. He might be ok, however I really do think it needs someone softly spoken, like Rog, to convey the the right tone and reflective intimacy that the programme represents at that time of a Sunday evening.

Tough call.

I wouldn't be surprised if we got someone different, from a different religion each week. Bit like PFT. Might be the better solution in Lesley Douglas's world of relentless evolution? Long as she steers clear of the fecking telly names, for this of all slots!

He's called Brian Darcy, a lovely chap but without wishing to sound rude he is not in the first flush of youth either, he's about the same age as Roger so retirement beckons for him too.
Plus Brian is a catholic, that may make a difference to some people perhaps, nice idea though, he is nice to listen to.

Brian Darcy, that's the name! Thank you. Is he really about the same age? Wow. Never knew.

I suppose there's several schools of thought. Younger presenter = younger listeners, but then I'm in my thirties and adored Rog. I think SHH needs someone who's lived a little to be able to impart words of wisdom.

I also believe it matters not the age of the presenter in terms of attracting a younger audience. I don't think a younger listener would actively seek out the show knowing someone younger was at the helm. I mean, this is a Sunday evening religion slot we're talking about.

"Yeah, you know if only that God dude was a bit younger and on my wavelength then maybe I'd take an interest in him!"

Agree there Lady B!

Over the last few months I've often left the radio on at the end of MFY if I've been at the PC and I've got to admit I didn't want to switch it off.

Thanks Helen. Yes, Roger's presentation is gonna take some beating. It hit just the right note for the shape and form of the show and, I suspect, for a good many infirm listeners, is their Sunday visit to church.

Thinking about it Easter isn't that far away. They must know therefore who's talking over.

My breath is bated...

I suppose Aled's a likely contender but I really do think it should be someone of the cloth like Roger. Time will tell.

News from the Dawn Patrol. Although Canon Roger is retiring from Sunday Half hour, he will continue to do some 'Pause for thought' slots.

As much as we would like to hold on to certain presenters for ever, there cmes a time when they and us must move on.

I know that the UK is now a multicultural and multifaith society, but it would be best if this slot was covered in a Christian way. I would have no problem with Brian Darcy, although I am an Anglican, and the differing emphasis of the various branches of Christianity would be useful in a closer understanding.
