Sandi Thom has had a massive rant against Radio 2 for not supporting her after they decided not to put her new single on the playlist.

There could be a question mark about the station not supporting new work by acts they regularly play but I'd say she's had more than enough support from Radio 2 over the years, and really her time has passed. |

I thought that the whole essence of Radio 2 was to play a fair amount of music which some might consider to be past its 'sell by' date
Surely the new stuff gets played mainly on Radio 1 and commercial stations unless a new release has some link with the past - the new ELO album being a perfect example and then it gets played on Radio 2

Who's to say that Sandi Thom's 'time has passed'? Why not play her new tracks and let us, the listening public decide. Isn't that what music TV & radio is supposed to do?

I agree with the opening post in that Radio 2 played and publicised Sandi Thom enough when she was starting out (she had a pretty dreadful song about punk rockers with flowers in their hair, I seem to remember).
There are plenty of other new and more talented artists who need the airplay.
As it is, I think Radio 2 do a pretty good job of playing the 'old' and the new, though I sometimes wish they'd concentrate less on faded old has-beens like Rod Stewart and Jeff Lynne. |

Agree about Jeff Lynne, Hyde Park and then the Radio Theatre concert. A bit too much and too close together.

I'm saying it on the basis that her record sales had a pretty fall off, but fair enough the music could still be good. So I listened to the track in question and it's pretty bad. And I speak as someone who actually bought Thom's first two albums!
Regarding the wider issue I brought up, I was thinking of Radio 2 stalwarts like Al Stewart, Gilbert O'Sullivan, America, and the like never getting their new material played. But a quick look at the playlist shows new stuff from Enya, The Corrs, James Taylor, Don Henley and Squeeze getting played so perhaps I'm wrong. Whether these current songs (even from Jeff Lynne and Rod Stewart) will be played in a year or it'll just be the old favourites again remains to be seen. |
