I have just booked my first of the year - 4 days walking in early May in the Lake District, which is the furthest north I will ever have ventured!
I plan to add on a few more days as I have a list of places I want to visit. So far they include Beatrix Potter's house Hill Top, Carnforth Station for the Brief Encounter connection, the Pencil Museum ... Any more suggestions? |

No suggestions that I can think of at the moment, Eileen, but all of those places you have mentioned have been on Michael Portillo's route this week on his train journeys and seeing Carnforth Station made me think I must have a train ride up there and have a cup of tea in that famous Brief Encounter Refreshment Room.

| Lowther Castle is good for walking, but Muncaster Castle is a great place to visit and has the Ravenglass Railway nearby, which is definitely worth a ride on. |

The walks are all led so they have been pre-planned by the organisers.
Thanks Becky for info about the Portillo programmes which I have been watching this week. I had already decided on the Lakes holiday before I knew that Michael was going to be covering that area so that was a nice surprise.
Ian, thanks for the railway info as I always try to do a train trip on usually a heritage railway when I am away somewhere new. |

There's a few in the Lakes but I think this is a particularly nice one. |

Went there yesterday. 
I thought it was just the Brief Encounter tea room at Carnforth Station but there is so much more to do with the film and those times in the Heritage Centre next door. One of the women who volunteers in the Centre was telling us that Celia Johnson's daughter called in to see them a couple of weeks ago.
There is a (permanent) David Lean exhibition too
It's well worth a visit.
