I missed bits of SOTS but heard the Crickets (not the announcement though) Becky. I think they do voice bits (it's got a name but I can't think of it Sad ) and slot the records in afterwards on some or even all weeks. So I'm guessing they had pre-recorded it and because of Cilla's death they put in an extra bit so the timing was off and they changed the last track forgetting to change Brian's intro.

Someone with more radio experience will come along and correct me I'm sure!

Not sure about that Helen

I would guess that the three Cilla tracks selected would have been chosen to fit in with the time slot normally allocated to 'Three In A Row' - I reckon that the error at the end of the show was simply down to producer incompetence - after all it wouldn't be the first time would it Smile

Well it's always pre recorded Ruddles that's for sure.

Yes that's true Helen - I can't see Brian getting up at some unearthly hour on a Saturday morning - especially at his age

Even a recorded show should still be put together properly and accurately and I simply think that at the end of the day the producer has to carry the can for any glaring errors such as the one pointed out by Becky Smile

"Revolutionary thinking" "BBC". Not words that you see in the same sentence very often

A superb SOTS this morning, the best for a long time. More hits than usual and some good obscurities. My favourite was Gullivers People who I've not heard before and a song called Splendour In The Grass: wonderful.

Another highlight was Oh Well Pt Two by Fleetwood Mac. Plus hits from the Small Faces, The Move, Jimi Hendrix, The Hollies and Lulu. Well worth listening again.

I enjoyed hearing Pt 2 of 'Oh Well' as well. It's such a shame that you very rarely hear both parts played on the radio. Why not do that one week!

The track which excited me most on last Saturday's show was the one by Paul Revere and the Raiders - a very underrated bunch of musicians who were huge in America in the 60s but never really translated that success abroad - such a shame Sad

Brian said this morning about Granny Takes A Trip by The Purple Gang being banned by the BBC... I remember the song but don't remember it being banned.....wonder if they used to announce every record they banned back then?

From Wiki..."The BBC spotted the word 'trip' in the title and, assuming it to be a reference to LSD, banned the record from their airwaves. Also noting that the band's lead singer at the time (Pete Walker) was nicknamed 'Lucifer', the BBC Controller said “. . . a song with a dubious title designed to corrupt the nation’s youth – and a band that boasts a warlock for a singer will not be tolerated by any decent society."

So there! Razz

Looking at the list of banned (by the BBC) songs on Wiki makes for an interesting read.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_banned_by_the_BBC

George Formby fell foul of the BBC's rules three times in the thirties.

I see that Waterloo by Abba was deemed inappropriate for airplay for the duration of the first Gulf War and was subsequently banned (along with others) from their radio stations.
Another record played on the programme today was Ain't Gonna Wash For A Week by The Brooks Brothers. One of their other records,Warpaint was another one that was banned for the duration of the Gulf War ???

Lovely song (Lady Of The Island) that I hadn't heard before, from Crosby,Stills and Nash, played this morning.

That's on one of my CSN compilation CDs. Must give it a listen.

At last ! SOTS played the superior, original and unadulterated version of Gimme Some Lovin' by the Spencer Davis Group, which is heard hardly anywhere nowadays - radio stations etc almost always opting for the American mix. Thank you.

Another of those SOTS mix-ups this morning. One Timi Yuro track announced and a different one played.

I didn't notice the mix-up, Tom, (musn't have been concentrating) but I enjoyed the one Brian played...I hadn't heard it before.
Which one did he say was going to be played?

Sorry for the delay in replying. I can't remember now, but I think he (or the producer) was confusing the name of the track with the album title. Anyway, yes - I liked the song too, and I suppose I shouldn't quibble : we're lucky to have a programme like SOTS which digs out these obscurities for us. Even if it does make silly mistakes sometimes !

When I'm Five....a nice little song (that I hadn't heard before) from David Bowie on the programme this morning.

"I will jump in puddles, laugh in church and marry my mum
And I'll let my daddy do the washing-up"

No Becky - I'd never heard that Bowie track either and I reckon that from the format and lyrics it can easily be seen as to from where the ideas for his early seventies stuff came Smile

It was, I think, the unsuccessful follow up to the excellent Let The Heartaches Begin.
I enjoyed hearing Hugo Montenegro's The Good The Bad and The Ugly, one of those songs/tunes rarely played on radio.

NB Brian: Well Respected Man by the Kinks was not a hit as you claim, but an album track.

The Gene Clark track was announced as being from his 1967 solo album..but was actually Gene with the other Byrds from the group's first LP two years earlier.

One minute I was listening to the very dramatic Another Tear Falls by The Walker Brothers ...the next I was listening to the very innocent sounding Exclusively Yours by Mark Wynter....two very different Sounds of the Sixties....both very enjoyable! Cool

Gosh he's doing well Becky!

A shame that they played last week's show today though, as they were referring to Proms in the Park happening 'tonight' when of course it was last Saturday. I think it was to do with Frankie Valli.

Brian's had a few health scares in recent years but it's great to see him still so accomplished in presenting a superb music show and long may he continue

After all he's already outlived many of the artists whose music he plays despite being born many years before them Smile

I heard a Four Seasons song,Helen, but didn't hear what Brian said..

As I wrote elsewhere Frankie Valli was in great voice at the Proms in the Park..
