Just heard the sad news that Ed has died in hospital in Bournmouth after having a stroke.
So many memories of him on so many programmes on Radio 1 and 2.
RIP

Very sad news. I was peeling the veg at my daughter's on Xmas morning, listening blissfully to Ed, as I do every year. I shall miss him dearly.

I can only echo what's already been said here. I remember my first ever mention on radio was on Junior Choice courtesy of my parents on my birthday in 1972. Later on in the 1990s listening with my father on a midweek afternoon, especially his 'accumulator quiz'. As I recall, it worked in a similar way to Ken Bruce's 'Popmaster' but was a general knowledge quiz. Then, of course his Sunday afternoon show. Very sorry to learn of his passing.

I was trying to remember the name of his quiz LEE as I used to listen regularly. They had the year end championship the same way as Popmaster does.
I think we'll all miss him, especially at Christmas.

Very sad and shocked to hear the news about Stewpot.
I hadn't got round to listening to his last programme yet but heard his sign off (on the news ) from it and he sounded fine.

It was a good one Becky. We opened Christmas presents then I did the veg (like Raver who it's good to see once again!) for lunch.
Just had a dig around on Ed's page. You can only listen to this past Christmas Junior Choice but the playlists are there for all but the first should you want to look. I think I've probably got recordings of most on computer so may listen again some time.

Last night Clare Teal gave him a special mention and played two songs in his honour: Terry Scott's "My Brother" and a Sinatra track because Ed was such a fan "Too Marvellous For Words".
I was already an adult of course when Ed took over Junior Choice but I always listened. Christmas morning won't be the same without him. |

I listened to Stewpot's programme this afternoon,Helen, and I came away from it thinking how very jolly he sounded in the knowledge of how happy his programme made so many people.
In amongst the delights was the wonderful Make Some Happy by Jimmy Durante which lifted my spirits on this rather sad day. |

Very sad news, which I only heard just now by reading this forum : - strange thing is I remember hearing distant strains of Champion the Wonderhorse on the radio last week and thinking 'what an earth is Liza Tarbuck doing playing that?!'
Ed's programme had become an essential part of this household's Christmas morning - unwrapping presents with all the adults singing along and making comments whilst the youngsters were completely baffled!
We will miss him next Christmas, and we'll miss those terrible records that we loved so much, that nobody else will ever play.

Yes I think that Ed's death was somewhat overshadowed by the death of David Bowie and with so much coverage of that there was no space for more than a minor tribute on any of the shows.

Like others that have posted on this thread the Christmas Day Junior Choice shows had become something of a tradition and we'd put it on whilst preparing the Christmas lunch.
I written a tribute to Ed together with loads of audio here:

Radio 4's Last Word had about equal mention of Stewpot, Bowie and Rickman. But I must admit when it started, I'd forgotten about Stewart already. |

I have been listening to some of the audio clips, currently the one from Aug 1993. I note the comment underneath about the outside broadcasts. I certainly remember the Paris one where he went up the Eiffel Tower. I'm also reminded of an outside broadcast that another late, great Radio 2 presenter did. This was John Dunn, when he was doing Drivetime. Does anyone else remember the show he did from the British Antarctic Survey?

Don't remember John Dunn's broadcast from Antarctic Survey but thought he went to the Falklands (?) and re-fuelling at Ascension Island>
