Whatever happened to Simon Bates? Didn't he present the slot Ken Bruce now has? I was reminded of him the other day when Alan Titchmarsh played the theme from Romeo and Juliet. He had a slot very similar to what SW has now on the Sunday love songs. I thought he was great, but never seem to hear anything of him these days. |

He was working on a Brighton station last I heard, but I think he's now breeding horses in Sussex or somewhere down that way.
He did Radio One weekday mornings for years. The theme from Love Story comes to mind. I read his autobio recently - full of bile, hate and bitchiness, and I know see why he earned the reputation he did at R1.

He never struck me as being a particularly pleasant chap. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I don't remember him bitching, but I wasn't too much into the scene at that time. I just caught the odd radio show. I do remember DLT being very bitter and bitchy though after he lost his slot. Does he have a slot anywhere now, does anyone know? |

He is on classic FM, he usually does the music from the movies show.
I too had heard that he wasn't too pleasant but then he bought a house in a village in rural Cambridgeshire where my uncle lives.
The word on the street was he was very nice, polite and helpful so it just goes to show you can't believe everything you read. |

Yes, he's on Classic FM - he started on the Movies show but has moved to total weekday dominance: he's on from 8am to noon, at least. Pity, really, as he's a pompous twit. |

That's how he was regarded at Radio One, apparently, though according to his own book it was everyone else's fault that he came across in that manner. He has no kind words whatever to say about the infamous Matthew Bannister who pushed a broom through the place and changed the face of the station overnight.

I've met a couple of people who've been associated with him, and apparently he can be a bit 'difficult'....more than that I can't say as he has very good lawyers!
I am, however, a huge fan of his Classic FM shows - the morning show is the regular accompaniment to my journey into work, and his movies show is excellent (especially the TV special over Christmas - TV music is neglected far to often in favour of the more glamourous big screen, but there's been some great stuff over the years.)
I didn't realise he'd written an autobiography - I must track it down! _________________ "....you're wearing a plywood bow tie with Dundee United on it?" |

You'll have to look hard. I found mind in a remainder shop for £2!!! A look on eBay will turn up copies no doubt.

Just ordered one from Amazon - thanks for the heads-up, I had no idea this book even existed! I love score-settling autobiographies...I bought JY's on the day it came out, then found a signed copy in a charity shop a few months later!
Now, who's got a copy of 'Bouncing Back' by Alan Partridge.....? _________________ "....you're wearing a plywood bow tie with Dundee United on it?" |

He's big. simon bates.
Simon Bates the golden hour on radio one.
I remember Mike Read sitting in for bates whilst he was at one of the airports and he said you can all go down there and touch his trousers.
Is he married, as I never thought he was as he used to talk about as he always went out to dinner every evening with mates? |

According to his autobiog he is, or was. Whether he had any mates or not isn't discussed.

Nah, it was a second-hand one for a couple of quid - I'm not desperate enough to pay full price for Simon Bates!

In Chris Donald's 'Rude Kids - A History Of Viz', Donald said that Bates kept claiming to be the magazine's No. 1 fan.
The editors went to be interviewed on Radio 1, and marvelled at the size of the presenter's spare tyre! 'That's well Batesy' was to be heard around the office since. _________________ We made a land where crap is king and the good don't last for long.

Didn't John Peel and a few other Radio 1 jocks back in 1980 plan to give Batesy a hiding? |
