So, Tony Blackburn stands accused of not fully cooperating with the BBC's investigations of Savile's and Stuart Hall's wrongdoing and all of his contracts with the BBC are terminated.
Is this proportionate?
And who will take over Pick of the Pops? It took Radio 2 rather a while to remove Blackburn's name from the programme listings and even longer to replace his photo.

Absolutely scandalous decision by the bbc.
I was puzzled as to why Pick of the Pops wasn't on replay early this morning when I woke up, I thought someone had just selected the wrong day's rerun until I heard the news.
The BBC seem to be victimising Tony for either lack of recall of an event long ago or are accusing him of either lying or even being complicit in Saville's goings on.
The whole thing is turning into a Macarthyesque witchunt and is very distasteful _________________ The wheel keeps on turning...

This is a real shame for Tony Blackburn and a shame on the BBC. I hope we don't get some fluffy headed so called 'celebrity' presenting Pick of the Pops now instead. There are too many shows fronted by such people already and POTP is one of the few programmes I still listen to on Radio 2. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

This absolutely stinks - call me cynical but I believe that today the BBC has hung out TB to dry as a distraction to keep the real news today away from the media agenda - namely the absolutely appauling activities of Jimmy Savile for which the BBC carries a huge responsibility
It's the oldest trick in the book which governments employ all the time - bury bad news by creating some kind of diversion to occupy the media
As was said on radio today TB's only crime is his constant use of bad jokes and I for one will be making my feelings quite clear to Mr Hall and his cronies - not that it will probably make any difference _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

It's still on Iplayer Fog on the Tyne, I'm presently recording last Saturday's edition (66/74) on to my laptop.

I agree that it's disgraceful that the BBC are treating him in this way. He's the scapegoat in this Jimmy Savile saga that is for sure. I didn't hear JV today as I had to go out just as it was starting but it seemed like they were to discuss it. I may listen back later.
I hope he sues the BBC and wins!

Just watched Tony Hall being interviewed about this, and a less convincing, less reasoned explanation from a less credible character would be hard to contrive. I sincerely hope that he ends up losing his job - this would be the best outcome for someone who so unthinkingly ends someone else's long career.
When we discuss issues of abuse, disrespect, unfair treatment and bullying behaviour, the present conduct of the BBC in relation to Tony Blackburn should be held up as an example of everything that is wrong.
Quite beyond the context of the BBC, I thought we lived in a society where people were considered innocent until proven otherwise. It is depressing to see, yet again, a life being ruined without the apparent need for any justification or presentation of evidence.
My low opinion of the BBC and those who run it has just plumbed new depths.
I hope Tony Blackburn sues them for a fortune.
I hope Tony Hall finds his deserved spot amongst the unemployed very soon. |

I agree. I don't think I've ever seen anyone less convincing than he was on the news just now.

Classic BBC balls-up. Blackburn's clearly in the wrong but perhaps suspension or fine would have been the answer. Nobody looks good from this. |

Listening to Hall it appears that tony was dismissed because Janet Smith didn't like/ believe his answers to questions - oh well that's ok then, one woman gets to be judge and jury and Hall acts out his role as executioner.
Absolutely pathetic that one person is allowed to ruin a respected broadcasters career.
No host for Pick of the Pops listed on R2 page for this weekend yet.
Helen,I'm surprised that last week's show is still on IPlayer but maybe it's too difficult to remove it at short notice. _________________ The wheel keeps on turning...

There was a rape allegation made against him in the early 1970s and there are lots of documents to prove that managers spoke to him and investigated it. Problem is, Tony is saying he was never spoken to and had nothing whatsoever to do with it. As his version of events doesn't match all the others (including his lawyer of the time) the BBC have sacked him for lying to the inquiry.
Of course, everyone's now going to think he raped girls and his reputation is ruined. They shouldn't have sacked him, I think that's an over-reaction, but by going on the attack before the official news came out he doesn't seem to have done himself any favours. Claiming the BBC documents are forged to smear him has the whiff of desperation and now he's threatening to sue the BBC for, essentially, not interrogating him enough about a rape allegation. Maybe he should let that lie.

I'm trying to think of another way they could have ballsed this up but I can't. Who the hell does Hall think we will support; a much loved presenter or an organisation that employs rapists and child molesters? It's only a couple of days ago they had to pay damages to the victim of Crusher Clarkson's thuggery. Not only that but they seem to think we are even more stupid than they are, sacking TB on the day Smith's report comes out in an attempt to divert attention from the criminal goings on at the BBC. For God's sake, my windows are less transparent than their behaviour.
As for the crap about standards falling short I'd like to point out that the BBC's standards have fallen short. I'd like to but I can't because the BBC don't seem to have any standards to fall short. _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

There was an interview with Tony Blackburn on Radio 4's Broadcasting House this morning. It makes me think more and more that this is all a smokescreen to take the heat off inept managers who did nothing about Jimmy Savile. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

He's back!
The BBC and Tony Blackburn have agreed to disagree, and he'll be back in the New Year taking over from Desmond Carrington at 7pm on Fridays.
However, I'm told this is an appeasement to listeners who will be up in arms at other changes on their way. |

I read Paul Donovan's radio column in the S Times a couple of weeks ago and he said talks were in progress.
I dread to think what the other changes could be................
Good news though as it means they can use Tony elsewhere, on Bank Holiday specials etc.

Obviously the Beeb didn't want the case to go to court and be asked questions such as "Why did you keep employing Jimmy Saville, Stuart Hall and Rolf Harris?
Good to see Tony back _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

Good news indeed with a large portion of humble pie being eaten by Auntie Beeb in my view
I really hope he doesn't continue the dismal menu previously offered by 'hot rockin' Des but at least he's back to do other shows
Any chance of him being back on POTP when PG is away on holiday I wonder or will they pre record the show as in recent months? _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Great news.
As Desmond leaves us, we are more than ever in need of proper radio presenters, rather than just another celebrity who fancies having a bash at radio.
BBC, and Tony Hall specifically, appear to be cultivating a brain, which is even better news. |

Must admit I'd like Tony back on POTP. I can't really get into Gambo in that slot. Miss America's Greatest Hits on Saturdays as well.

I entirely agree Helen
Gambo is a very knowledgeable man and excellent at presenting stuff from his native country but he simply does not fit in on POTP to the point where I just don't look forward to the show any more
There is the well known saying about 'horses for courses' and POTP is simply not his course so let's see TB back there asap _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Got to agree with Helen and Ruddles, Gambo's a great broadcaster but POTP just doesn't suit his style and pace of delivery.
Give it 6 months and they might edge Tony back and hopefully give Gambo his old show back too _________________ The wheel keeps on turning...

He's improved but still not a patch on Mark Goodier - shame Dale Winton couldn't have come back for a couple of shows bearing in mind he's recently been doing other things on the network _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |
