Speculation brewing the future of Sounds of the sixities on Saturday mornings could end up being true and replaced with a breakfast show ( god knows why ) hosted by Dermot O'Leary whilst Zoe ball takes over his Saturday show. There's been no solid confirmation, but looks Likley these changes could take place at the beginning of 2017. What is the point having a Anneka Rice from 6am and breakfast from 8am . Looks like the station is moving forward to the new generation https://www.google.co.uk/amp/www.radiotimes.com/amp/news/2016-09-20/sounds-of-the-sixties-to-be-moved-by-radio-2?client=safari

I suppose there is no harm if it is moved to another slot, but to get rid of it altogether.....well, surely Radio 2 and Bob Shennon can't be that stupid. Or can they?

Not been on this site for ages, and I come back to this hoary old story. Scott Nelson's not writing for the Radio Times now is he?

There are 2 flaws with this plan. First, it's clearly designed to keep Dermot on board even though he's back on X-Factor. In which case, why start after X-Factor has finished...?

Second, Sounds of the Sixties is Radio 2's highest-rated weekend show and thus gets listeners in for the Saturday and Sunday. A move would be disastrous for the whole station.

The alleged proposal just doesn't seem to hold water for me

Bearing in mind that within the last couple of years R2 has introduced Sounds Of The Eighties and even more recently Sounds Of The Fifties and they also have Sounds Of The Seventies why on earth would they want to miss out the sixties Confused

Paul Donovan of the ST was speculating a couple of weeks ago that Brian might be retiring. Now that Desmond's going surely Brian must be the oldest presenter on R2. If that's true we have an obvious replacement in the newly restored Tony Blackburn.

I've just managed to wipe the name Scott Nelson from my memory and now it's back. Bugger!

Scott's a much-quoted pro-Corbyn political commentator now, known as "Socialist Voice" on twitter, but previously as "The Mockney Rebel." People take him seriously, despite being banned from the Labour party for his anti-semitic tweets (which he has since removed).

I'm far happier with him destroying the Labour Party rather than claiming to be the world's number one authority on music and radio schedules and bullying anyone who dares to disagree

With the way the Labour Party is heading who knows - he might even end up in the Shadow Cabinet Laughing

So!

Today was Dermot O'Leary's final Saturday show. He's back "next month" in a new slot with a new format.

Hmm.

Given that Friday Night is Music Night now consists of regular repeats and is I guess the sort of programme that the BBC bosses think no longer appeals to the desired audience I wonder if SOTS could be included within an expanded Tony Blackburn show. The Golden Hour format is good but seems strange on its own.TB would seem to be a natural candidate to play 60's hits. Phil Swern produces both I believe.

My guess is Sounds of the 60s will go in Dermot's slot then you have two companion shows in roughly the same slot on Saturday and Sunday. But don't know who'd present it - as you say Nick, TB would be the most suited.

BBC R2 & Unique have announced this afternoon that Brian Matthew will not be returning to SOTS due to ill health. The programme will continue with a new presenter ( details not specified). The full press release can be found on the RadioToday website.

At very least they should have allowed him to come back until say Easter in order to give him the chance to properly say goodbye to his numerous fans of many years - and of course by then Brian would have been in a position to tell listeners who would be taking over

Oh but sorry I forgot - it's the BBC we are talking about which these days seems to be in the hands of inconsiderate and incompetent idiots Evil or Very Mad

typical BBC ditching the talented and experienced broadcasters and no doubt giving another wannabee celeb a show

Yes, it wouldn't have hurt them to give Brian that much, would it? 60 years, this year, since he frst presented Skiffle Club - later to become Saturday Club. Just a few more shows to say goodbye properly, after 60 years. For those of us old enough to remember, he was such a vital part of the early 60's scene on radio and then on Thank Your Lucky Stars, that it's unthinkable he should be so coldly discarded like this.

But we shouldn't be at all surprised, as it seems to be their modus operandi.

If I knew the Latin for 'no class', I'd type that. Brian has plenty.

What a shabby way to treat such a gem of a broadcaster as Brian.

The BBC,Mr 'Carnage' (thanks LEE) in particular, should hang their heads in shame.

As has already been said Brian should at least have been given a decent leaving by the BBC, befitting his service to them, but they wouldn't know decent if it hit them in the face.

Disgraceful behaviour. Evil or Very Mad

Agree with you all that it's such a disgrace that Brian should have been treated so badly.

I hope whoever they get is better than Tim Rice, and maybe they could change the producer as well as the music this morning has been awful IMHO. Of course producer probably is with the 'company who decided on the chop' or maybe he even owns it as he does more than on show on R2...........

This is a disgrace. Brian should have been allowed back to say his goodbyes, but then I suppose the truth would get in the way of the BBC's lies.
If this show gets put in the hands of another so called celeb it will be the kiss of death for me.

Once again I am left wondering.....
Not just how a public funded organisation can be run so badly (that is not really surprising any more)....

But how they can be allowed to act with such a complete lack of integrity:
THEY ARE LYING about reasons for Brian's 'retirement'.

If is going to be regarded as 'OK' for the BBC to lie to the public, then we have a bigger problem.

Completely agree with your comments about today's show Helen and like you I am wondering who will take over the show

I suppose the obvious name in the frame is TB being that he has just become rehabilitated within the BBC and of course he kicked off Radio One and all that stuff back in the late sixties

I agree with Angela generally about the complete undesirability of any celeb taking over but I do think that I would make an exception in the case of Joe Brown who has very successfully presented the show before and who has impressed me on several radio appearances recently with his great knowledge and experience of sixties music

However for me there's one obvious candidate who was around in that era and who has vast knowledge of music of many decades including the sixties and who also has experience of working with Phil Swern - yes I'm talking about Mr Popmaster himself -Kenneth The Bruce

If they swap his role on Friday Night Is Music Night with Tim Rice's current slot then both shows would benefit in my view so bingo - Robert's your Dad's Brother Smile

Still so sad about the situation with Brian though - I imagine that show must have been a major part of his life and losing it might have devastating consequences - I really hope I'm wrong Sad

Ruddles, Joe Brown would be a good choice and fine with me. The sort of celeb that I wouldn't want to hear would be someone who has no knowledge or appreciation of music in the sixties. I could list those who are already on Radio 2, but I am sure you will know who I mean anyway.
It is an appalling way to treat someone of Brian's standing, I doubt the BBC could do much to sink any lower in my estimation now.

Don't forget that Johnnie Walker also did a great job sitting in for Brian in his absence. I agree with everyone else on here that it is a very poor show to just unceremoneously dump Brian Matthew without a bye-or-leave. Sadly there is a history of this kind of thing happening. Someone has mentioned it happening to Jimmy Young. After tonight there will be no more Janice Long or Alex Lester. It would seem that many years of loyal service now stsnds for nothing.

Very disappointing...

Anyone know where SOTS is going ?

Also why is Jo Whiley billed as standing in for O'Leary when we all know he has done his last show on a Saturday ?

Why don't they just tell us what's going on ? Rolling Eyes

I will be listening to even less R2, and that's not much now Rolling Eyes

A petition has been set up about the decision to replace Brian as a presenter of Sounds of the sixties. Here is the link if you wish to sign it.

Seems like the petition has had some effect, Angela. The BBC have been kind enough to throw Brian a morsel from their trough...

It would perhaps have been nice if Tim Rice had displayed a little moral fibre...
'Covering' for someone who doesn't actually want to be absent might easily be regarded as colluding with the BBC in this disgusting treatment of Brian.

Tony Blackburn said he's got some some exciting news coming up but couldn't say. I'm wondering if he's taking over the show with it maybe moving as Dermot is moving to another slot.

At least he was there in the 60s which IMHO should be one of the first requirements a presenter should possess before being appointed.

Sorry the grammar doesn't read quite right but you know what I mean!

Can't see anything wrong with your grammar, Helen.

I too think TB would make a good presenter of SOT60s. He was there at the time and loves the music. Definitely NOT Joe Brown as suggested earlier, as he is stuck in a pre-1963 time warp like the current producer Phil Swern, and it's time for fewer ridiculous obscurities from 1961 and more late 60s music.
