By chance I saw on Twitter last night that tickets went on pre-sale today for the 2017 tour.

Programme is MGM Musicals so should be good. Booked my seats direct with Bridgewater Hall this morning.

Thanks Helen. I had an email from Amazon inviting me to order tickets through them but I shall check other outlets first. It is our annual Christmas treat nowadays Smile

Eileen there was a tweet Wednesday night from the 'JWOfans' who I follow and they said it's always best to try the venue first rather than agents. I get emails from Bridgewater Hall anyway so I always go there first.

It doesn't always work though as sometimes the agencies get the better seats from the start. The first year I tried B. Hall said they had no seats and I didn't realise that they had given them to an agency so we missed out that year.

Thanks oldraver, that is a nice article.

Also, thanks for reminding me to book tickets for the Festival Hall London in December. I had so much trouble doing it on-line that I gave up and then other stuff got in the way. I have now booked by phone. Phew!

Glad to be of some help, Eileen! The Southbank Centre online booking is usually pretty good. I love the RFH. Best place in London, alonmg with the Union Chapel, to see and hear great music.

Glad you've got your tickets Eileen.

Thanks for the article link as well Raver!

Have you seen the Proms list? JWO are doing a semi staged Oklahoma on I think August 11th with a matinee and evening performance on the same day. I love Oklahoma and I think it's televised the same night.

I should have checked the Proms list before I posted, so sorry if I've got details wrong.

I'm glad that it wasn't last night Eileen, as it was extremely cold here, no snow but not good for driving. It's supposed to get a bit less cold during the day so fingers crossed.

Was thinking of you on Saturday!

We really enjoyed the concert Eileen, it was over far too quickly! I wonder what they will do next year?

Did you hear that Oklahoma! will be on TV on Christmas Day and also the Swinging Christmas with Michael Parkinson is on BBC4 quite late on the same day?

No I hadn't heard that, Helen, thanks. I loved the Oklahoma! production but I have a vague feeling that I didn't quite enjoy the Parky programme as much as I had expected. I'll watch anyway.

I'm glad you enjoyed John Wilson. The acoustics in the RFH are fantastic so we heard every word from Matt and Louise. I hope it was the same for you. I loved the selection of music and especially memorable for me was Matt singing the one from Brigadoon "There But For You Go I".

Helen, I have booked for John Wilson at the Royal Festival Hall in December.

I am pleased to be able to tell you that because I thought this MB had been closed down permanently. I have John's other fascinating website about old music in my favourites and had thought of asking him to forward you a message, but I don't need to now. Smile

Eileen I've PM'd you. We booked for December at Bridgewater Hall, only about 3 weeks ago. I was beginning to think there wasn't going to be a tour this year. I'd seen info for the Festival Hall but nothing for other venues.

Not long to go until the tour starts. Our venue is first night this year.

There is a new CD (a double one) out this Friday, Best of John Wilson Orchestra which looks to be good. Amazon have it for £9.99 so might indulge!.

Thanks for the tip off about the CD Helen. We are going to the Festival Hall on 15th December. I am angry with myself because I was caught out by purchasing tickets from Viagogo. What possessed me, I cannot imagine Mad

Eileen, as long as you got tickets that's the main thing!

It was wonderful last night, the encore especially so. You'll enjoy it.

Tinged with sadness for me today though as my Mum sadly passed away this afternoon. I spoke to her twice this morning and we talked about the concert, she was a fan and saw JW perform at the Sage Gateshead several times long before he started doing proms.

Oh dear, Helen, sorry to hear about your Mum. How nice it was that she too was a fan of John Wilson and that you were able to talk to her about the concert.

Am I right in thinking that Matt Ford is not in this one? If that is the case I shall miss him.

Eileen I hope you enjoy Saturday's concert, we certainly did!

You are right Matt Ford isn't on the bill, he was part of the Sinatra tour which I don't think finished until last Saturday. In any case the vocals were superb by Kim Criswell.

There is a great encore as well!

Helen, I was a bit disappointed last night until the FANTASTIC encore numbers. Thank goodness for Kim Criswell but I would have preferred more songs and a male singer, either Matt Ford or Julian Ovenden.

The orchestra is wonderful of course and there was plenty to enjoy but I found my mind wandering during some of the longer film incidental or background music because there seemed nothing to get my teeth into, as it were. Individual shorter pieces were great.

Did you buy a programme? I didn't for a change as they weren't available on the Level we were on at the RFH and I wasn't inspired enough to go downstairs in search of one. If you have one, could you tell me please the name of the lovely slow waltz which was played I think just before Mike Lovatt's great playing of The Shadow of Your Smile? I seemed to think it might have been from La Cage aux Folles but unsure.

I hope to continue an annual visit to the JWO, as long as I know there will be more songs, either sung or played. I don't think incidental or background music holds up without the pictures to go with it, in my opinion anyway.

Eileen,

I did buy a programme, was the waltz from Slipper And The Rose? A couple of pieces were not quite in the order they were played.

I agree that I could have come up with some other pieces and hope they will get back to their previous winning formula even repeating some of the previously heard pieces.

My favourite Prom is still Hooray For Hollywood! I may watch it again over Christmas.

Matt Ford seems to do a lot with the Foden Band as does Mike Lovatt (according to Twitter anyway. I follow @JWOrchestrafans which somehow links to Matt Ford. I don't use it that much but get odd gems of info from it!

Thanks Helen, yes it was The Slipper and the Rose Waltz and I have just found it on YouTube. Silly of me to think it was from La Cage as there hasn't been a film of that show, as far as I know.

I was wondering how you had been after your sad loss. Quite busy I should think with making arrangements.

A nice surprise when watching sci-fi comedy The Orville on Fox this week when The John Wilson Orchestra popped up to perform Singin In The Rain (sadly without the main man himself).

I see that John Wilson has a Prom this year on 9th August entitled The Warner Brothers Story but I can't find anything about a tour this year.

Thanks for that Eileen! I hadn't seen the Prom list.

I've been wondering if there is to be a tour. It seems very late for an announcement if it's to happen at the usual time of year.

It seems that there won't be a tour - first time in several years Sad . However, I have just booked for the Albert Hall Prom on 9th August.

It's a shame isn't it Eileen. I sort of wondered if there would be any more when they released the 'Best Of' CD. Hopefully there will be more. I suppose it will depend on the material he is working on. One I wish I'd seen was the 'Hooray For Hollywood' one. I couldn't get seats from Bridgewater Hall but realised the following year that they are given to the organising agent and they were still available. Sad

Glad you were able to get seats for the Prom. Is it the afternoon or the evening?

I have booked for the evening one, Helen.

NB It is being shown that evening on BBC4. I shall be setting the recorder for it before we depart for London.

I have watched the first half and it is absolutely stunning. We were very high up at the Albert Hall so didn't get the full force of especially the singers. Matt Ford singing "I'm Getting Married ..." was utterly wonderful on screen but didn't come over so well in the AH.

I have heard the Albert Hall isn't actually that great for listening to stuff. It's why they have all those upside-down mushrooms in the roof, but even then for some sections with some types of music you don't experience it how you should.

It was a long time ago, probably 70s or 80s, that I heard that the acoustics were not brilliant at the Albert Hall but I thought they had improved them.

I sometimes think the sound is better on TV but there is nothing like being there at the performance. Glad you were able to record it Eileen.

The Warner Brothers Prom is being repeated on New Year's Eve in the early evening.

... and I couldn't resist watching it again even though I had recorded it on the Skybox on first transmission.
