I'm amazed Helen... last time I looked, they were on Ebay.. in fact I bought another! The older silver ones were better because you had an "electronic" programme guide so you could click on the programme to record it. One of my silver ones packed up on the recording side but the other is fine.

I had a Robert's Recorder,Santa, bought for me as a present round 5 or 6 years ago. Last year the recording part packed up..I wasn't happy and I would never (even if they were still in production) buy one for myself. I expected much more from it ..like it working properly for many years. Rolling Eyes

Yes Becky, I've read a lot on Roberts recording radios and associated problems. I have two silver ones, the older models, and two white newer models.
One of the silver ones stopped recording and despite many factory resets, I can't get it to record. I found the silver models won't work with the high memory SD cards and I think this is what fried mine! the other still works fine though.
The white RecorderR versions are excellent in my opinion and both have worked very well with 16 Gb cards!. I'd be lost without them.
I also have a bedside Roberts iStream which is great too. It records to SD cards or the USB port. Trouble is, you can't program this unit so it's a manual record.

SantaFe what model is your bedside Roberts radio that records? That is the one that I should have bought but went for the internet version which doesn't (can't have it all ways I suppose!) record.

I have the Stream 83i from about 5 years ago and I bought the newer 93i last summer for upstairs. The newer one is compatible with Spotify but I don't think the sound is quite as good as the older one which has remained in the kitchen which wasn't the plan.

Morning Helen, It has the name "Roberts Sound 53" on the case. I can't check the box because that's still at my other place whereas the unit has moved over to our new kitchen in Suffolk.
It's about 7 years old now.. It has a nice rich sound, much much better than the portables. It's nice to be able to record to the USB or card but as I said, no timer is fitted. I've seen them on Ebay recently.
I also bought the internet black box radios which are great but of course, don't record. That's why I noticed the Pure version which does.

Thanks for the info SantaFe . I'll have a look out for that one.

I read up about the Pure Evoke 4 last night but the reviewer (a writer not just a user) said it was very fiddly to record from.

It's a shame the BBC messed with 'Listen Again' which was available when I first got my Stream 83i.

The newer 93i has the facility to hear podcasts, I think on the internet section, but it's not the same as using iPlayer on your computer and I think it only goes back 7 days. I must admit I've not fiddled with it much, there was a known fault of an alarm going off at midnight and turning on the radio if you left it attached to the mains, even when you had cleared all alarm settings. Shocked After 2 nights I disconnected it, and an update fixed that in the autumn. I've not been listening much as we are spending so much time in the NE house clearing and on estate matters (it's wearing me down). I look forward to having time to using it at its full potential one of these days!

I didn't bother reading reviews before I bought the white Recorder R, I didn't even think of it.. Laughing
But a while back, I did read lots of reviews on this model and there were many getting into a right strop about how difficult it was to record.. all I can say is these people must reach for the keyboard 5 minutes after unpacking their radios. I've found no problem at all with the record function and a after a few days, I could set it up blindfolded.
Although limited to 4 timed recording sessions, it's plenty enough for me.
I sometimes wonder why I record all the SOTS and POTPs but, I had it in my mind that one day, I'll retire and need music and shows I want to hear - all day if necessary and now that time is here!
It's funny though, how things move on in the home. I have a stack of LPs, then a stack of CDs then I built up my SD & USBs then last year I bought a Jukebox - always wanted one, but now with YouTube on my smart TV it beats them all in some respects, I can hear and watch what I want - for free!

I'm sorting through Dad's stuff and there is a Sony 200 CD player (it contained 200 of his CDs) and it's like a jukebox as the discs are vertical. I had the job of finding the right CD cases for each one, that was after I'd figured out how you got them out there was no manual! Cassettes amounted to around 200, mini discs around 100 and LPs which I've just got to must number around 100.

I don't know why but I still don't think you can beat just switching on the radio and taking pot luck with what comes out of it! Having your SD cards to play from said radio set is very next best thing!

I didn't know there was such a thing as a 200 CD Sony! I'm amazed!
Yes, sorry to read about your dad, it's a terrible time and the last thing you need is to have to sort all his belongings. Very difficult. When my mum died, I walked away after a squabble with my brother so I got nothing but that was fine with me.
I take your point about live radio and I do have Radio 2 on for most of the week ( I still like old Wrighty and luckily he's still there ) but there are more and more bland celeb types taking over which are not for me - at all. Dermott O'Leary and Zoe Ball have ruled out most of Saturday, I can't bear to listen to either.
For me, the smart tv is a brilliant thing to have. I've always liked to see the act perform as well as hearing them and with even a medium sound system it sounds great! I have phases in what I want to see and hear, AC/DC to Pans People, The Monkees to Frank Zappa...it's all there.
Also, I love old TV so, Dragnet, Highway Patrol, Dotto Shocked What's my Line, Top of the Pops,, evreything including B movies. It couldn't be better. A few nights ago, my wife and I enjoyed many James Brown appearances... unusual for us to enjoy the same music! Laughing

Well did all you alert posters spot the obvious error in today's show?

Shortly after the start TB played 'Captain Of Your Ship' by Reparata and the Delrons' and introduced it by claiming that he recalled playing it when he was on the pirate ships in the sixties which is complete nonsense because the track was released in mid 1968 long after the then Labour Government had put a stop to the pirates activities and by the time it reached the charts TB had been broadcasting on Radio One for almost twelve months

Come on Tony - I know it's April 1st and some people are half asleep around 6am on Saturday mornings but you really need to do a lot better and I'm surprised that Phil Swern didn't pick up on the point in question

Still it does rather support the theory that TB was probably telling the truth in his previous dispute with the BBC because if his memory is really that bad I can quite believe he probably genuinely did not recollect the details he was questioned on in relation to the Savile enquiry Smile

Haven't listened yet... This is a funny thing. I had to Google the track as I was sure it was before 68... I would have bet good money that I used to listen to "Captain of your Ship" on my little transistor radio in bed listening to Luxembourg. I wondered if there was an earlier version but no! It could be I'm getting this muddled with Sea Cruise but they're not much alike...

I haven't listened yet either but without checking anywhere I'm going to say it was out around Feb 68. I could be wrong.

I wonder if it was released in the US and Tony got an import earlier than the UK release?

The song was a UK hit in April 1968 and I can find no trace of its release in the US so it seems Ruddles is right and that TB is talking rubbish.

There were some awful pop songs in the first half of that year and this song is one of them.

I thought that the effort at a tribute to Brian on the show this morning was rather disappointing - after all they had a whole week to come up with something half decent and I really don't think that playing 'Midnight In Moscow' which is alleged to be Brian's favourite sixties track together with the very predictable 'Foottapper'goes anywhere close to properly respecting the memory of the long standing former host of the show

Am I surprised though - in short No Sad

I thought their tribute was poor. I suspect they had nothing planned until people started contacting the show to ask why they hadn't mentioned Brian's passing.

I think you're probably right Angela

There must have been a huge number of listeners contacting them for TB to promise a tribute later half way through the show

I just hope the official one this evening is a great deal better Sad

I've just put this on Helen's Tributes galore thread, ruddles.

The tribute to Brian was first broadcast in 2014 according to my TV (the radio part...) and also to the Radio 2 website.

Was away last weekend so have just caught up with Tony's programme from last Saturday. The last record he played was the wonderful Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks. It was released in 1967 and to mark it's 50th anniversary it was featured in the programme Soul Music on Radio 4.

Yet another gem from Phil 'the Collector' Swern who seems far more usefully employed on this show than in his previous incarnation producing Brian Matthew

It's quite evident to me that whilst TB appreciates his input he's not going to let Phil Swern dominate the show with his obscure personal favourites Smile

Funny you should say that, ruddles. Tony played an obscurity yesterday saying it was a failure both in America and over here! I thought at the time I wondered if he was going to play a few more less well known songs from back then,as Brian used to.No complaints from me if that is to be the case.

The song was You're Invited To A Party by The Victorians...I've never heard it before..it's not bad ( Tony said that he had heard it for the first time in 1961 and remembered thinking it was rather good so perhaps he picked this obscurity himself?)

Yes Becky that's what I was thinking - I think that TB is happy to play some obscurities and there's certainly nothing wrong with that as far as I am concerned but instead of Phil Swern's agenda dominating the show as used to be the case with Brian it's now under control and used selectively which to me is better not least because when an obscurity is included it is usually of decent quality as was certainly the case on yesterday's show Smile

Yes I agree. It's good that TB plays far fewer ridiculous pre 1964 obscurities than poor old Brian had to. The music played is fairly good but I can't help thinking it is fairly bland and unchallenging. A few more album tracks from the late 60s wouldn't do any harm. But I guess TB doesn't do the less obvious.

Definitely her kind of song,Raver She missed out big time with that.
I'm listening to Tony as I type..he's just played Goldfinger by Shirley.

Bern Elliot And The Fenmen,anyone?

I've never heard of them and they had the only hit over here with the song Money, so Tony said.

Last week Tony played Downtown by Petula Clark and recalled a birthday party he attended a few years ago which both Tony Hatch and Petula attended. Tony sat down at the piano and played his composition (Downtown) and Petula sang it..that must have been a lovely moment.. Smile

She was 85 this week. Her Wiki page is a great read. What a life she's had.

Must have been, Becky. What a great song.

She was 85 this week. Her Wiki page is a great read. What a life she's had.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petula_Clark

She was on the Light Programme shows that Paul O'Grady presented a while ago,Raver....she told this story...

From her Wiki page

In October 1942, the 9-year-old Clark made her radio debut while attending a BBC broadcast with her father. She was there trying to send a message to an uncle stationed overseas, but the broadcast was delayed by an air raid. During the bombing, the producer requested that someone perform to settle the jittery theatre audience, and she volunteered a rendering of "Mighty Lak' a Rose" to an enthusiastic response. She then repeated her performance for the broadcast audience, launching a series of some 500 appearances in programmes designed to entertain the troops.

Perhaps you heard it,too.

That's a great picture of her on the Wiki Page with Harry Belafonte and a great story to go with it.

Downtown was danced to by a couple on Strictly this week.

I listen again to it,usually,in the time slot it was on when Brian did it. I'm finding,Angela,I'm really enjoying most of the songs that Tony is playing and SOTS is still a must listen for me.

I never listen, too early. However, looking at the music played for Saturday it looked a very good show. If only it didn't start at 6am. It just shows the contempt Radio 2 has for 60s music and it's fans.

I always listen to the show live at 6am but there again I'm up anyway at that time on Saturdays

I think the choice of music is far better than was the case with the previous format but I do feel there is too much emphasis on Soul and Motown to the exclusion of Progressive and other Rock - mind you that's no real surprise with TB hosting the show - at least he seems to be able to keep Phil Swern in check which Brian clearly couldn't

I still do miss the old show but as I've said before it would be great to have the original SOTS back with TB following up with an all sixties breakfast show Very Happy

I preferred the old format, to me the new SOTS is just the Tony Blackburn show playing sixties music. He irritates me so much.
My o/h calls TB Dermot O'Leary's warm up man. He certainly mentions him a lot throughout the show!

Some statistics about the programme (since Tony took over) from Bob,a listener, that Tony read out this week.

The number of records played ..the top ten performing artists...the top labels. In terms of years...1967 is the top with 182 tracks...(37 from the Radio 1 anniversary show)....second is 1966 - 170 and third with 146 is 1965.

Blimey,Bob! I just listen and enjoy. Cool

He obviously has time on his hands. Not complaining though as those years were very good for music, better than the early 60s favoured by Brian IMHO.

I agree with you there, Ruddlescat
I think the show is a lot more accessible to the general listener now and I find it a better listen than Brian's show.
