Could there be a better track played all week than "Reggae Like It Used To Be" by Paul Nicholas (played on POTP toda)? Undeniably awful, yet strangely compelling.

Steve Wright played this today. Haven't heard it in years. I bow to nobody, in my admiration of very early Bee Gees. Why, just as puberty began to kick in, I even preferred then to the Fabs for a short while!

Hormones. What can a poor boy do?

A nice song indeed. I have a box set of three CDs featuring albums by the Bee Gees from 1967/8. Fabulous music eg Kilburn Towers.

Songs like I Started A Joke and First Of May will always be superior to the overplayed disco stuff from the 70s.

Beautiful song, beautifully sung...don't think I've heard it before..

Amid all the tragic news today from Manchester Jeremy played this beautiful song from Beth Neilson Chapman

Yes, I don't think he could have played a better song under the circumstances, than Beth's one. The only time I ever won a free ticket was to see her at the Mermaid, for FNIMN a few years ago.

Going back to the Bee Gees, if I may...I boiught everything of theirs, for a short while. All the singles up until Jumbo, I think. And the first two albums, Bee Gees 1st and Horizontal, were the first two LPs I ever bought. I was transfixed by Robin's unusual voice. But it's okay Becky...The Fabs were soon restored to their rightful place. We were spoilt for choice with brilliant and innovative music in those days, weren't we? My second two albums were the Best of the Beach Boys vol 2 and Abbey Road...2/6 per week on my mate Jon Wells' Mum's Freeman's catalogue. He sadly passed away a few years ago, but everytime I hear Abbey Road or Hey Jude, which we both bought on the day of release, then he's not far away.

So I'm assuming Schiz, that your box set consists of the two albums I mentioned and Idea..then, of course, it was Odessa, which was very avant-garde for the time.

Lastly, but by no means least...my thoughts are with the families of the victims from Manchester. Terrible beyond comprehension.

Jo Whiley's opener, Tonight The Streets Are Ours by Richard Hawley. Ages since I heard it.

I know we sometimes like moan about Jezza but he sometimes plays some really (or not going back to the old message board days!) apt music. They say it's not done on purpose, but I don't believe them.

Oldraver: correct, they are 1st, Idea and Horizontal. Bought from a huge record store a few years ago in Athens for about £50.

Noel Gallagher said a few years ago that those early Bee Gees albums were nearly as good as The Beatles' ones, and he is a huge Beatles fan.

Helen. Have you heard the John Culshaw Jezza impression that's on Steve Wright's show? It's hilarious!

A flatttering comment from Mr Gallagher, Schiz. As it should be, seeing he was the songwriter of the best Rutles tribute band ever.

It's a couple of jingles that he (Wrighty) plays, now and again, H.

There's one on this about 1:34:00 in...not the best one, but it's a taster.

Track of the day was on Steve Wright's oldies this afternoon:

The wonderful Castles In The Air by Don McLean. Nice to hear this instead of the usual American Pie and Vincent.
And it was followed by the lovely Oh Girl by The Chi-lites.

Mine for today is the Kinks' Well Respected Man which I've just heard on Absolute 60s on the internet radio.

O/H switched over from R2 after 1pm and I've got to say they've played some cracking tracks. Within the hour I've heard Time Is On My Side from the Stones, Heatwave from Martha and the Vandellas (as they were at that time!) and Dusty's I Only Want To Be With You.

Great for a summer's afternoon!

H

PS maybe it should have been on R 2 but it was years since I heard it!

From Ken's programme,my Track of the Day is the wonderful La Mer by Charles Trenet.

A song that Alan Titchmarsh would have played on his much lamented programme.

Also from Ken Bruce's show. Keith Urban is choosing his 'tracks of my years' this week, his first choice was 'Do Ya' by ELO. As I remember, this was the US hit when we, in the UK, had 'Rockaria'. However the usual trick at that mid 1970s time of reversing the US / UK releases when the tracks had run their chart courses didn't happen with these two tracks. For whatever reason 'Do Ya' was never released as a single in the UK. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI6MW-iPgOU
It was great to hear hear it played on the radio after so many years.

If memory serves, Do Ya was a b-side of California Man, which was a Move single when Jeff was with the band.

And my brain cell still works from time to time...contrary to rumour!

On today's Drivetime show. Justin Hayward is the guest and Simon played 'Blue Guitar' that Justin did with John Lodge. Haven't heard it in many a long year. I still love that track as much I did when it was released in the 1970s.

Baby Make It Soon by Marmalade on POTP 1969. Can't remember when I last heard it. I saw them I think later that same year at Newcastle City Hall as part of some city festival.

I bought a CD of Marmalade's Greatest Hits about a year ago and it's become one of my favourite things to listen to in the car when there's nothing decent on the radio which is sadly becoming a more and more regular event - with superb tracks like 'Radancer' 'Cousin Norman' and the excellent 'Wait For Me Mary Anne'

Some really superb tracks today from the best ever year in music including Clodagh Rogers Robin Gibb Thunderclap Newman and Love Affair Very Happy

I have a double CD called Fine Cuts of Marmalade. My favourite is Wait For Me Marianne, which I think was a single but not a big hit. Other great songs are Rainbow and of course Reflections Of My Life.

Yes, 1969 was a great year. I've always loved Something In The Air by Thunderclap Newman. Other goodies from yesterday's POTP were Give Peace A Chance and Honky Tonk Women. And In The Ghetto. And That's The Way God Planned it.

The CD I have which I think is called 'The Very Best Of Marmalade' starts with a superb track called 'Rain' - I don't recall it ever being a single let alone a hit track but it's really good and isn't really typical of the rest of the album Smile

There's a track on mine called I See The Rain, perhaps it's the same song.

Hopefully it's not a cover of The Beatles' Rain. They did do a few dodgy covers.

I'd have thought you were a Beatles fan!

Anyway, Rain was not any studio album and was the b-side of Paperback Writer.
Very psychedelic, more like Oasis in fact.

I always had a certain affection for the Beatles but as I got older I began to appreciate that there were better artists around such as The Moody Blues, The Move The Hollies and quite a few others

I realise it's probably a minority view and I've no wish to decry the obvious talent of The Beatles but despite growing up within about ten miles of Liverpool they just didn't really do it for me Sad

Being in a nostalgic frame of mind after the Pirates, I'm listening to Tony B, who has just played The Young Ones. Hank's intro never fails to send shivers up my spine. As does the rest of his wonderful Strat playing throughout.

Gosh it's been a while since we posted to this thread!

My track for yesterday was 'A World Without Love' from Peter and Gordon on Liza Tarbuck. She loves it so she said, as do I!

Today's is Christie's 'San Bernardino' on Johnnie this afternoon. He played a lot of other faves of mine as well.

I'd have made my track for yesterday 'San Bernadino'. I'll have to 'Listen Again' and hear it in it's full glory.
