Music mogul Louis Walsh will no longer act as a judge in the next series of The X Factor, ITV has announced.

The Irishman will continue to manage acts off-screen, while two new judges will join regulars Simon Cowell and Sharon Osbourne.

The show's host Kate Thornton is also being replaced and is moving on to present new programmes with ITV.

A new category will be introduced to the show's revamped format, while the age limit will also be lowered.

Walsh said he would "focus my energy on my day job as an artist manager," including the relaunch of Boyzone.

"I am also looking forward to continuing my work with Simon and The X Factor team managing the stars from this year's series," he added.

'New dimension'

Walsh, who also manages chart-topping boy band Westlife, steered Shayne Ward to a victory in the second series, and mentored series one runners-up G4.

In the most recent series, won by Simon Cowell's protegee Leona Lewis, Walsh took charge of the groups category and failed to steer any of his acts into the final stages.

Thornton, who has hosted the ITV show for three years, is in line to present Sir Elton John's 60th birthday celebrations from New York, and is already in talks about another new project.

Paul Jackson, ITV's director of entertainment, said: "We are always looking at ways of keeping the format as fresh and exciting as ever. Having an extra judge and additional category will give the show a whole new dimension."

Hi Mark
Hi Andy.
Poor old Kate.
How will she pay the mortgage each month now?

I don't think Moyles would be too good on camera work.
You need a good idea of how TV works.
My ideal would be Philip Schofield who looks relaxed in any situation. Razz Razz

I hope no one suggests Holly Willoughby neither.
A lovely looking woman but so wooden on camera.
No, Philip Schofield would be a good choice in my book

When you're doing live network telly (and high-cost network telly at that) you need someone out front who can hold things together when it goes wrong. Kate Thornton can obviously be trusted to front such a show (there aren't a great many people who can do it) so it will need someone with a similar amount of experience. Obviously Philip Schofield comes into that category (he seems to enjoy live telly); Cat Deeley's another - but she's doing stuff in LA now.

Moyles would be funny - for a while - but can't really hack it at that level I don't think.

Ella agree that Philip could hack it.
I suppose on a singing talent show you could do with a host who has history in the busines..
Doesn't leave a lot of choice sadly...

Cat Deeley is comfortable on Live TV aswell.
Patrick Kielty is another but he does not do a loy for me.

Ah well as a last resort

EAMONN HOLMES!!!!!!! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

I've heard that the stage construction guys complain about having to accomodate Eamonn Holmes on the stage due to the additional number of RSJ's they have to use in its construction.

Hi back atcha MIKE. lets not even get Davina within a mile of this one, she'll just shout at the audience, shout at the acts and hog the camera for herself!

Who wants el Tel to have a go, he's great at Eurovision, let's see him have a pop (no pun) at these one hit wonders Laughing

She's co-presenting Any Dream Will Do on BBC1 from April. I think she's alright.

Rumours are that Dermot O'Nearly is going to host X-Factor - which would surely mean an end to his R2 Saturday show.

Dark horse me Wink

I think this X-Factor thing really spoils the music industry as the person is always guaranteed the christmas number one. It kills off anyone elses chances who hasn't needed to ponce around on stage to get views votes.

Poor Louis feels that he has been "stabbed in the back" according to the Daily Mirror today. I wonder why he kept that awful Osbourne woman though? I thought she was the weakest link in the last series. Plus her chatshow demonstrated how woefully limited she is as a presenter.
