Just listening to Mark Radcliffe's show about 50 years of Fairport Convention and of course tomorrow's 50th birthday of Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band got me thinking of how many more are there?

For me I guess it was a significant year as I did my GCE 'O' levels and I have so many memories of 1967. I travelled alone to Austria on an exchange which lasted a month, I guess I felt grown up!

There was of course the Summer of Love and flower power and on a more serious note the 6 Day war which I remember beginning the day my exams began.

There must be more, are there any that you can add and memories too?

A Whiter Shade Of Pale! Greatest song of all time.

1967 was a special year: new groups included Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Doors, while there were plenty of old favourites like Sir Tom, Herman's Hermits, Dusty, and Tamla/Soul...just about everything.

Groovy.

I will be listening to the Sergeant Pepper show tomorrow. I have just been reading a magazine, purchased in the USA last week, about the album and like to think I know all about it. Ironically at a pub quiz last night, a question was: what do Marilyn Monroe, Albert Einstein and George Bernard Shaw have in common?
I didn't know. They all feature on the cover of Pepper.

50th anniversary of Are You Experienced was earlier this month. It still sounds fresh.

I'd have got that question Schiz, I think....and there are some decent Sgt Pepper articles around at the moment..

I mentioned in another thread that it's 50 years since Waterloo Sunset was released. There is a programme (Soul Music) on Radio 4 Extra celebrating it.

I remember the 6 Day War looming large back then,Helen, even though I didn't exactly understand it all. The world held it's breath,it seemed, as if we were heading towards a World War ..very scary days.

'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' is for me without question the greatest song of the sixties and probably ever in terms of the music charts

I was listening to SW whilst gardening on Monday - something I rarely do these days - I mean the listening not the gardening Laughing

- and one of the guests was Englebert Humpherdinck since apparently this week is the 50th anniversary of the track 'Release Me' reaching number one in the pop charts

Not sure whether that's a good thing or a bad thing but the man is still touring and performing and apparently has a new album out which explains why he was on the show - after all we all know that guests only appear there when they have something to sell Rolling Eyes

I heard a few years ago that he was running a pub somewhere near Leicester but I've no idea whether it's still the case - after all the pub trade has been throuh some hard times in the last 20 years Sad

Yes, you can't hear Whiter Shade Of Pale without thinking of the summer of 1967. I love Homburg and A Salty Dog equally, as well, but I still get the same thrill when I hear it, as I did back then. If you're picking three records from any artist or band, then those three are as good as it gets.

I also heard the Soul Music - Waterloo Sunset episode. It was an enjoyable listen, as are the vast majority in the series, in my humble. I've seen a few Waterloo sunsets, when at the RFH. Wonderful song. I wouldn't like to choose between that, WSOP and Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane, along with a good few others, from that year. I just love them all...and feel privileged to have lived in the time that they were gifted to us.

I have always liked Engledink Humperbert: another great 1967 song was The Last Waltz.

But I will never forgive him for his dreadful Release Me keeping the Beatles' Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane off the number one spot.

It's a funny old world. I could never stand The Last Waltz, but I did like Release Me. If I remember rightly, Engeldick first popped up on Sunday Night at the Palladium, singing it.

Most of my mate's parents had a copy of the single as well. We soon discovered the joys of the flip side...Ten Guitars.

I'd guess it possibly would have been, but for Gordon Mills playing it safe with a ballad. He must have made fortunes from Engeldick and Tom Jones.

But he was never satisfied with the money he had....ask Gilbert!
