The BBC have announced plans to celebrate the 50th birthday of Radio 1 (I assume celebrations for the other channels will also be announced soon).

The main event is another "pop up" station, which will broadcast 'best of' hours by DJs from the last 50 years, as well as documentaries and other bits. The station will launch with a "triple cast" on Saturday 30th September with the same show hosted by Tony Blackburn and Nick Grimshaw broadcast on Radio 1, Radio 2 and Radio 1 Vintage at the same time. Yes, at last, Grimmers brings his golden touch to Radio 2!

Earlier that day, as part of Sounds of the Sixties, there'll be a live re-creation of Tony Blackburn’s first ever Radio 1 show, including Flowers In The Rain by The Move, famously the first song ever played on Radio 1.

Should be fun. There will also be some classic TV documentaries on iPlayer, including a behind-the-scenes of Noel Edmonds' 1978 breakfast show and the infamous Blood On the Carpet about Matthew Bannister's sacking spree.

Interesting line up of shows but I'm very disappointed there's no reference to David Symonds DLT Stuart Henry or Tony Brandon

Far too much emphasis on recent presenters who weren't even born when the station started half a century ago

A celebration of the birth of Radio One should be concentrating on exactly that Sad

I get why they might omit DLT. For the same reason that you don't see editions of Top Of The Pops that he (& Jimmy Saville) presented repeated on BBC4, even though both were big noises on Radio 1 in it's early days, but I don't get why no Bruno Brookes or Steve Wright.

How long has Ms Brambles been plain old Jackie, instead of the cutting edge "Jakki" ?

And who the hell are Fabio and Grooverider? Sounds like a duo that could be found on Eurotrash.

I'm with all who believe that it should be mainly about the original crew (a concession to latter day terms) of 1967 and the few years that followed.

As an aside, I stopped listening to R1, when Simon Bates started playing Bros. I just found it ridiculous. Some old bloke pretending to be down with the kids. Best thing I ever did. Now, of course, that accusation could be levelled at the likes of me.

Yes, I confess to watching and enjoying Lorde's set at Glastonbury (or Glasto, as us groovemeisters call it), despite it being aimed at 19 year olds. I recognise talent when I hear it.
