Wow, what a fantastic start to this new series last night. There was no music from later than 1950 and there were so many gems including one of my favourite records Bunny Berigan's "I Can't Get Started".

This is what Russell Davies does best and I am relieved that his vast musical knowledge is once again being put to good use.

I didn't get to hear this Eileen but I read Gillian Reynolds column in RT where she mentioned it. I'll hopefully find time to listen.

I haven't seen the Gillian Reynolds piece so must look for that.

Russell's show about songs and songwriters was axed in 2013 and it was a great blow, as far as I was concerned, as he knows so much and I learned a lot from him.

His series of interview programmes were OK but anyone could have done them and I thought it such a shame that his expertise was being wasted. He seems to be one of the few presenters who is aware of and knows anything about the huge collection of recorded popular music that exists.

This new series is only for six programmes but I hope it gets a positive reaction and will lead to more. I have emailed the BBC, Russell himself and the Radio Times feedback letters page.

Thanks, Eileen. I wouldn't have known about this if it wasn't for your post. Excellent stuff.

Yes, Raver, the programme is well tucked away at 11pm Sad. Still, at least it's there and the first programme is well worth a listen Smile.

I enjoyed it very much, Eileen. It's a crying shame Russell is no longer a regular fixture.

I must iPlayer last night's programme as I had to miss it, but I just caught the last few minutes and heard Russell say that another series was planned.

It is wonderful to have him back on the wireless sharing his vast knowledge with us and playing beautiful entertaining music Smile

Much enjoyed, Eileen.

Out of all the songs he played - and let's hope the new series isn't far off - this song absolutely melted me the other week. Especially the last notes.

Oh Madchen Mein Madchen - Richard Tauber

Well I've finally got round to listening to one of these! And thoroughly enjoyed it, I did!

Must make time to listen to more before they disappear. Always lovely to hear Stanley Holloway and his monologues. Laughing I was humming along to Java Jive by The Ink Spots and started to sing what I had sung as a youngster....only to realise they weren't the correct words!

I love coffee, I love tea
I love the java jive and it loves me

The second line was different!

Memories of the marvellous Singing Detective and lots more..

Whenever I hear Ruth Etting I think of the film with Doris Day and James Cagney..Love Me or Leave Me ...which tells Ruth's story.

Thanks for posting, Eileen, even if it has taken me a while to get round to it. Very Happy

I can hardly believe it but according to the Radio 2 website, Russell returns later in the year on Monday evenings 11pm until midnight.

However, I am hoping it will be his earlier format of celebrating great songs and songwriters rather than as in a later series in which he interviewed one performer and all the music was based around that person.

That's good news, Eileen. I'm prepared to wager that it's a six week run, or something. He would have fitted in so well on Sunday evenings again. Permanently.

Here's an old one from 2011, followed by a Clare Teal programme. Quality radio that seems a lifetime away.

What bliss, Raver, thank you. I listened to just the start of Russell Davies and my spirits rose. I have saved it for later.
