....sitting in for Steve Wright

Wiki says...
Ore Oduba (born 17 November 1985) is a British television news and sports presenter, currently working for BBC Sport. He is best known for presenting the BBC children's news programme Newsround from 2008 until 2014.
In 2016, he was the winner of the fourteenth series of BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing.

So ideal as a sit in for Steve.????

I have to admit I've only listened for a little while this afternoon so he might be ideal...anyone think he is a good replacement?

(This has nothing to do with the fact that I thought Danny should have won Strictly...... well maybe just a bit Smile )

I like him as a sports news presenter.
I only heard the oldies today, at least he didn't talk over the ends of each song, unlike the regular moron.

Heard a little bit on Friday and he seemed okay. He said they'd let him do Love Songs a little while ago and now had let him loose on the Big Show!

Didn't hear it today.

I've just had a look at the R2 schedules page and it would seem that Steve is back from tomorrow. Likewise for the breakfast show. Sadly Sara Cox was only in charge of it for today. Just in case you were looking forward to her being there for the rest of the week!

Do the BBC ever cast the net any wider than existing employees when they need someone to sit in?

Do they ever look around to see if someone, who knows their music, might be more suitable or is it down to someone who is comfortable behind a microphone and who can carry the programme with help (a lot of it) from others?? (As well as being a BBC employee!)
Ore is not the first and he won't be the last but it would be nice to hear someone who knows their onions, re music, doing these programmes.

It would seem not Becky. They have Amol ?????? on Drivetime. I don't like him (he did Jeremy and seems to be all over the place on TV news) and it was quite obvious he was reading from a script when introducing a track, it could have been the Blues Showstopper last night. Even O/H commented!

Quite useless.

I don't care for either. Ore has been all over the Beeb like a rash, thee past weeks. Clearly being groomed for the future, so the outlook isn't great.

Once the old guard wither and fade away, all BBC radios shows will be hosted by celebs, who have next to no knowledge of, or love for, music as we know it. Or knew it.

The good programmes on R2, all seem to take place after seven o'clock in the evening. It's just a pity that all radios don't have the listen again capacity. Jamie Cullum is one young fella who knows and loves his music. He had a great show last week, with Ramsey Lewis on there. I only caught it by chance, while in the car. Even Jo Whiley, I can listen to, without wanting to commit some awful crime. Just about.

Note to self...remember to listen to the Randy Newman programmes, before they expire. Only 2 days left to listen to the first one!

You know I didn't much care for Jamie Cullum when he first started out (too much hype perhaps?) but he's one who I now think has really matured into broadcasting. I don't like to miss his shows and his library must be vast.

Over the past few months I've been clearing out Dad's collection of CDs and many artists were names I'd not heard before but they registered with me. Recently I've heard tracks from several of these artists on Jamie's show and some have been recordings from the late 40s and 50s and thought 'Dad had good taste', which I knew anyway but it wasn't always mine!

Thanks for that reminder as well Raver!

It does seem a shame the likes of Mark Goodier, Richard Allinson, Janice Long, etc don't get a look in while rather bland sports presenters do.

I think the best stand-in for Wright recently has been Al Murray. At least he brought a bit of energy to it. These guys sitting in for Steve and Simon just have nothing about them.

I've only listened to the first and found it very frustrating - it's a strange mix of interview, live performance and promotion for his new album. Very often it will mix from a recording to a live version, then interrupt with a commentary. For some reason they just don't play the music straight.

It's a very great shame, even more so when you think that Radio 2 once had them all in their grasp and then they let them go, along with plenty of others. In each case it's very much Radio 2's loss. As an example, listen to Janice Long on Radio Wales (Mon-Thur 7:00 - 10:00pm) to see what I mean.

Well why is anyone surprised - the present situation has nothing whatsoever to do with ability of presenters but rather the BBC's long standing membership of the 'political correctness' club Embarassed

I was only saying that the other week,Helen. Neither Ore or Amol have one solitary word about music on their Wiki pages.

I tend to agree with Ian,Raver. I listened to the first one too but the presentational style just didn't work for me. Put me off listening to the second part...pity, I was looking forward to it.

In that case, Becky, I shall take yours and Ian's sagely adivce - in fact I already have and so blew Randy out.

In the meantime, Ore's managed to get a gig at the World Athletic Championships. A girl (woman of 62 now) who used to be in my class at school, was a gamesmaker in 2012, along with her daughter. The daughter was just on with the choir, singing Elbow's On A Day Like This. Very nice it was, too. She was also one of the women with Ore, just before that. Mum is joining her on Sunday, but is gutted not to be seeing Mo tonight, Bolt tomorrow, but has been blubbing at seeing her daughter on telly. Hot off the Facebook press.

If this was on the old BBC boards, this post would have probably been modded for going off topic.

So may I get back on topic, to say how welcome the news was, that Chris Evans has shed half a million idiots during the past year*

* The Rt Hon Ian Robinson excluded.

Ha! I must admit I don't listen as much as I used to. I work from home, and think Chris is better to listen to in the car. Not had a chance to look at the latest RAJARs.

Sorry to have missed that,Raver...I was in late in and thought I had recorded the athletics from the start so I could have looked back at that but for some unknown reason it had recorded something from the red button?? Rolling Eyes
As for Ore...when our athletes came home from Rio he was on one of those buses they were paraded on. He was shoving a microphone under their noses asking searching questions like "How do you feel?" Why do they do that? The crowd have come out onto the streets to see their heroes and people like Ore are taking them away from them..if I was a fan stood out there (sometimes in all weathers) I would not be best pleased..It has never made sense to me why the TV companies do that. Us ,at home can see them...they've already been interviewed to death....we don't need anymore. (I do realise if it wasn't Ore it would be someone else but he's the one I noticed so he's the one who incurred my wrath. Evil or Very Mad

That shoving a mic in the face and prattling away is a Room 101 for me. Can't stand it. The powers that be, must think we're as thick as they are.

Didn't he lose listeners with Top Gear, during his mercifully short tenure?

Eileen. He won last years's Strictly, if that makes it any clearer...

That's what he does best, I think. He's been pretty good this week, on the Athletics, with Colin Jackson and Jess Ennis's coach.

Becky. If you go to here, you can find the videos. The girl in question is nearest to camera with Ore...and at the end in the same place, during the song. She says nothing, and nor can you hear her sing, but the choir is really good.

Not posted for a while.

I'm obviously too old for Radio 2 now. I find this chaps Sunday evening programme totally disinteresting to me. As soon as he started the "Guess the Year" slot with a song from 2010 I knew it was time for me to bow out.

Is there any English language radio channel ANYWHWERE in the world that features pre Rock Era popular music - particularly on a Sunday?

Hi Eric I'm wondering the same thing!

His show is a total turn off for me as it's all about Strictly, which I don't watch, so why on earth would I want to listen to radio show pretty much dedicated to it?

I think I heard that someone had complained (he mentioned it last week before I turned it off) but did he take heed? Of course not.......

I've lost interest in the show. Winkleman started the rot with this "naughtie nineties" rubbish as well as having people on to prattle pointlessly. It's clear that she views her radio show as a part time job when she's not hosting Strictly. As for Ore (who he) he broadcasts as though he's asleep.

It's on TV seven nights a week...in one form or another... enough I would have thought for the most avid Strictly fans. I love it but have stopped watching the programmes through the week as they started having people in the studio who shriek (well perhaps not shriek) at the slightest thing...very annoying. Evil or Very Mad
I sympathise,Helen, with non Strictly fans who have it put up with it on the radio!

As I've probably said before it's simply political correctness gone mad - a totally untalented person who happens to strike it lucky because of the BBC left wing tendency to embrace this ridiculous promotion of minority people irrespective of their talent - I post very little on this forum today because I've virtually given up on this country - like Barcelona I just want my country back Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

I used to like Alan Titchmarsh when he was on. Ar least their was a variety of music. This show is just like any daytime radio show. At least this guy is better than the ghastly Winkleman. She's another of these presenters like Evans and Wright who can't stop jabbering. I'm sure they get a bonus for the number of words they get out

Ruddles I agree completely. The BBC has become ludicrously obsessed with political correctness. It seems that every presenter/pundit these days is black or Asian. I saw the first three minutes of the appalling One Show this evening. Both presenters were BAME and so was the ethnic guest, a BBC producer of some sort, whinging about 'refugees' and their perceived lack of welcome in Europe. (They could always return to their home countries of course, but that wouldn't occur to the BBC, stuck in its metropolitan bubble). In a few years time there won't be any white people at the Corporation.

In case any Guardian reader thinks I'm racist, I'd be the first to congratulate Lewis Hamilton, Anthony Joshua and England's u-17 World Cup winners for their superb sporting achievements this weekend!

You've got it spot on Schiz

I don't particularly care for Lewis Hamilton as I find him rather arrogant but as for Joshua and people like Nicola Adams - yes they deserve the utmost respect and credit for their achievements not to mention all those who went before them such as Lennox Lewis

I find I'm turning off BBC channels more and more these days but where do you find any impartial news coverage in the present PC obsessed media?

The main problem as Schiz says is London which seems totally out of touch with large parts of the rest of the country - perhaps we should have a referendum on the question of moving the capital city to Manchester or Birmingham Very Happy

Hmm - did I open a can of worms here? I certainly didn't mean to. I dislike Ore because I don't think he's that good and I've no interest in music played on his programme. I couldn't care less where he comes from or what his ethnic background is.

I'm enjoying some nice New Orleans jazz at the moment on Paul O'Grady's Show - so some stuff I like on today.

I'll be turning Ore off at 7.00 pm of course Very Happy

I've never been Steve Wright's biggest fan, but... blimey, Ore Oduba certainly makes you long for energy and fun of "the Big Show." It's like Smooth are missing a continuity announcer. Bland is too strong a word for the drivel being put out this afternoon. Down with this sort of thing!

He's everywhere like a rash right now, it will all end in tears....... I think I saw a trail for Would I Lie To You Featuring him.......

Someone tell me when it's safe to watch or listen to something he isn't on!

I think we're stuck with him, as I don't suppose he's even squeezed anyone's knee, but his own.
