Really sad to hear this news..
Actor Hywel Bennett, known for his roles in Shelley and EastEnders, has died aged 73, his agent has confirmed.
Probably best know for other roles but he will always be Arthur from The Family Way to me...I had a massive crush on him.

The Family Way was the first X film I saw and I was still underage at the time LOL!

Loved Hywel as Shelley. Legendary. I was too young (you've no idea how good it makes me feel to be able to say that) to see The Family Way at the pictures, but I did go and see The Virgin Soldiers.
I did get in to see my first X rated film when I was 12 though - a Danish sex comedy romp called Seventeen, starring Ole Softoft, I think his name was. GLC certificate, which meant London could show films the rest of the country couldn't. I think...
Oh yes, Hywel. I'd completely forgotten he was married to Cathy McGowan at one time.
Also, the incredibly alluring and fantastic actress Jeanne Moreau passed earlier this week and the Churchillian Robert Hardy too. They has long and full lives. It seems Hywel was ill for quite a time, bless him. A really great actor, who could play so many different roles. Never took himself too seriously, either. After all, he did star in Percy.

You can go right off some folk...right Helen? 
I saw The Virgin Soldiers,a bestseller (think I read the book too) turned into a film, from the pen of Leslie Thomas...which told of his own army days.

I thought The Family Way was racy for those days, but the one you saw,Raver..sounds much more so! Only shown in London,eh..perhaps the rest of the country were deemed too innocent for that sort of thing,eh????

Yes. I read the book a few times. The name of the Chinese laundry has just come into my mind. And David Bowie has a split second role in it...though I've never seen him.
I think the London certificate was because they'd make any inoffensive film X rated, in those days. I was grateful for it, in any case. The second X film I watched. was Valley Of The Dolls, which went right over my 12 year old head.
Anyway...I was right about Ole...and it's on You Tube!!

I read Valley of the Dolls years ago...a real eye opener about drugs in Hollywood...based on real people I believe. I think I read Judy Garland was one of them.There was an adaptation of it on Radio 4 a few years ago.

I didn't know that about Judy, Becky - though obviously knew about the studios (MGM?) getting her hooked on amphetamines to fulfill her contractual duites, ie slavery.
That Danish film, though thought racy at the time, is more like a second rate Carry On film, if such a thing exists. I prefer Borgen, these days.
