I enjoyed the Cliff episode too. People sneer at it but he didn't volunteer. He was called into the organisers' office and asked if he could possibly provide some entertainment as the weather was so horrendous. He was a good sport and it was great to see several players joining in.

I hope Murray can get get sorted out without too much drama. I always love to watch Federer and I would love him to win.

It's only a clip at around 2h 29m. It's called 'Sporting Occasion', Alan Titchmarsh used to play it every year around this time but alas no more.......

You Tube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYVDI522hgo

It could be a minute before you get to the part that you recognise.

It would be nice it they could play it in full at the end on Sunday as they used to......

H

PS let the You Tube continue and you'll hear another long lost radio memory (my Grandpa always listened!).

They still play that theme tune (in the football season)before Sportsweek on 5 Live on a Saturday evening. When I hear it I feel as if I have stepped back 50 years or so...love it!

I seldom miss the music to the football results on Saturdays at five on Five. It wouldn't be Saturday (or football) without it. Isn't the Wimbers tune the same one it's always been? I'm not familiar with the Sporting Occasion..ah, just recognised a little piece of it. It is the same. I can remember when Billie Jean King was Miss Moffatt!

I wasn't denigrating Sir Cliff of Dover, either. And certainly not sneering at him. No, it was meant to be a humourous aside, to lower the boredom factor in my post. Why, I'll wager that I am the only one on here, who actually bought Congratulations, in 1968. I've only recently got over him only coming second to La La La.

I could be a real anorak and tell you what the b-side was, but that'd be a step too far. Talking of which, that funny little dance he did on the Eurovision to that, was probably the only one I could do as a kid, apart from the Twist.

So I won't tell you, but if you cllick this link, you'll find out...new balls, please.

I never knew his official title...thanks! Wink

I remember Little Miss Moffatt as well.

Well I didn't buy Congratulations and would never have remembered who won the Eurovision that year.

Boris B was saying this afternoon, watching Federer, that he remembered him being a bit of a brat. Andrew Castle replied that his parents warned him about his behaviour on court and said they would not come with him anymore if he didn't change his ways..he was showing them up.. Shocked

Perhaps next year for Jo..

Just seen that Andy Murray has withdrawn from the US Open due to that hip problem. So no Murray, or Djokovic or Wawrinka. I hope Marin Cilic does really well to make up for losing the Wimbledon Final against Federer when that huge blister made it so painful for him to play his best.

Oh dear, poor Kyle Sad . I hope that neck problem isn't serious. It must have been so painful.

It is just as well we are out of the Davis Cup this year what with Andy's hip, Kyle's neck and Dan banned!

I stayed up until the early hours watching del Potro pull off that extraordinary win over Dominic Thiem. He will now face Federer in the semis - I can't back both of them Sad.

Yes, I do hope Andy's hip problem can be sorted out.

I stayed up until 5am this morning watching the terrific match between del Potro and Federer. I was delighted for Delpo and if he hadn't had all those wrist problems and operations I am sure he would have been one of the Big Five with Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray. He has done so well in making adjustments to his game and deserves all success. A lovely chap too, by all accounts, and liked by the other players.

Oh well, I stayed up until 4am to see del Potro being beaten by Nadal Sad. I shall not be tempted to have another late night to see the Final on Sunday which is just as well as I have a Pilates class to go to at 9am on Monday.

I haven't done any late night/early morning viewing of this tournament,Eileen.

The final of the mixed doubles is on at a much more civilised (over here that is) time.

Hingis and Murray romped through the first set of it, 6-1, but Chan and Venus have settled down in the second set and have broken the serve of Hingis and Murray.

I can't find coverage of it on any radio station...lucky for me I have found a stream on-line.

You'd think the BBC would put it on 5 Live Sports Extra.

I watched the second and final set in the Shanghai Masters Final in which Federer beat Nadal. Federer was awesome and Nadal seemed at a loss as to how to cope with him. Nadal is still holding on to his number one in the world (for the time being).

Anyone here following the ATP Finals? There have been some cracking matches and although I felt a bit (but only a bit) sorry for Nadal and his painful knee last night, it was great to watch Goffin playing so beautifully.

Nadal has now withdrawn and his place will be taken by Pablo Carreno Busta.

This afternoon Cilic was beaten by Sock. Tonight Federer is playing young Zverev so that should be interesting.

I haven't managed to see any of up to yet,Eileen. I see your 'mate' Roger fought back to beat Marin Cilic in three sets and head into the semi-finals with an unbeaten record from the ATP Finals group stage, today. Smile

I loved the way Goffin played and beat Federer and I do hope he has a really good match against Dimitrov tonight.

It was a terrific final and Goffin has gained many new fans I am sure even though he lost.

I shall be watching at 8am tomorrow, Becky. During the early hours of yesterday I woke up a couple of times, checked the score against Dimitrov, saw that Kyle was doing well and nearly went downstairs to watch on TV but was too warm and comfortable so I didn't. He is coming on so well and seems to be a hard worker with plenty of grit - and a nice young fellow, by all accounts.

Kyle did so well, that I think he'd have even beaten the great Aznavour, this time.

On a serious note, there are so many players failing to finish games and tournaments, due to injuries. This has to be because the rackets make the balls travel at ridiculous speeds, leading to all the baseline rallies, supersonic serves etc etc. I'd love to see then rein this back a little, but of course, that'll never happen.

But it would be great to see the subtlety come back into the game...those little dinks and touches at the net, instead of all the crash, bang and wallop.

I'm not advocating the return of long white trousers, but I wouldn't say no to the return of wooden rackets.

Very Happy

Hopefully he will be fit enough to play in the Davis Cup,Eileen.

I heard someone on the radio,Raver, saying that jam packed schedules were part of the reason for top ranking players suffering injuries. Could be a combination of the two.

Believe it or not, Becky, that was something else I was going to put in my post, but for some unknown reason, I didn't.

Andy Murray was never the same after playing for 12 months solid, in his quest to be rated the World's No 1. Why? It doesn't matter a jot, in the grand scheme of things. The records will show he has won Wimbledon twice and the US Open, along with his Olympic titles. All of those make the No 1 thing pale in comparison.

Which brings me to The Fed. He has either had regular blood transfusions at the Swiss clinic where Keith Richards used to have his done. Or, most likely, his decision to take lots of time out, over the past two years, have turned the clock back, like something out of an HG Wells novel.

I have always said that Rod Laver is the greatest ever, but now, I have to say, that The Fed must be the greatest ever. He is a freak of nature. He could beat the others playing with a frying pan.

Laughing

He really is a phenomenon in the tennis world and he plans to go on as long as his wife is happy to follow him round the world with their four children.

"An intriguing scenario is unfolding in the wake of Roger Federer’s sixth Australian Open triumph in which the ageless Swiss arrives at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to join his long-time rivals, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, in a grand farewell to their illustrious careers."

I think Roger has always played a different game to the other three - Rafa, Andy and Djokovic. His range of shots is amazing and he doesn't slog it out from the baseline, avoiding such a massive assault on his body.

We (daughter and I) have always said Rafa's knees would cause problems and Andy has always had to deal with a kneecap problem that has probably not helped his hip.

Never been keen on Djokovic, always had my suspicions that he was taking something - and Sharapova's 'medication' could have been in his diet. He certainly hasn't done so well since that was banned.

Excellent result from Cameron Norrie today.

We have a new hero! Cameron Norrie on his debut in the Davis Cup beat Spain's Bautista Agut from 2 sets to love down! Now we are one all. It is Jamie and Dominic in the doubles this afternoon. I will be watching on BBC2. I wonder if yesterday's matches were shown on there? I think Sunday's will be.

Didn't Cameron Norrie do brilliantly! I hope he gets his wish to take part in more clay court matches and that his ranking rises as fast as Kyle Edmund's has. It seems that his experience of playing college tennis in the USA stood him in good stead as he said it is highly competitive and very noisy, even during points.

Disappointing result for Kyle but he played well. I like to see Gasquet play so watched some of his match against Nadal - no hope of beating him of course. I also like to see Goffin play and I watched some of his match against Monfils who was clearly unwell. I missed all of DelPo's match because I was cleaning and disinfecting the bird feeders and heard he was sailing through anyway.

The upside of Sharapova winning today is that she will play Serena on Monday. I have never been a fan of the Williams sisters but I have been amazed at Serena this week and will back her on Monday.

Watching some of Serena's play the other day,Eileen, it was difficult keeping my attention on the tennis with the outfit she was wearing! Shocked I will be keeping my fingers crossed for her on Monday, although she would probably be very dismissive of anyone doing that for her. Very Happy

Yes I was gobsmacked at Serena's outfit but then I heard it was for medical reasons to prevent blood clots, to which she is susceptible. However, I think she could have worn a little skirt over her nether regions Very Happy.

Poor Goffin didn't seem quite himself today. There are some good matches to watch tomorrow with Serena/Sharapova (I will turn down the sound!), and two of my favourite players Cilic and DelPo.

Wonder what she'll wear at Wimbledon....that's saying she will be there. She has just pulled out of the highly anticipated match against Sharapova with an arm injury...how disappointing is that! Sad

That was disappointing about Serena but it seems she hadn't given herself enough time to recover from giving birth and I think she only stopped breastfeeding a few weeks ago. I hope she plays at Wimbledon.

I'm pleased Cilic and DelPo both got through but they play each other in the next round. I must say Fognini is a very watchable player so I look forward to seeing him again. Very Happy.

Tuesday:
That hamstring problem was a shame for Zverev today. Did you see the stunning match between Djokovic and Cecchinato? What a phenomenal ending!

That tie break was easily on a par with the famous Borg/McEnroe one. Breathtaking, spellbinding, or any other superlatives that come to mind.

The easy mishit forehand will haunt Djokovic for a while, too. He, along with everyone else in the stadium, couldn't believe what he'd done.

Sunday 10 June:
Crikey, an 11th French Open win for Nadal! Thiem will get there one day.
