The gobby idiot losing the breakfast show to a proper presenter, perhaps?

Simon Bates on Smooth has been a good listen this week. I like Richard Madeley, but had to tune to see what the shows were like. Mr B at Smooth could take a few listeners away from 'Mr E R2 breakfast show.

A squawking parrot could attract listeners away from The Gobby One, let's be honest. That said, wild horses wouldn't encourage me to listen to "Mr. Radio One Cheese 1980" over on Radio Sickly!

I heard Mark contributing to a BBC programme the other day and thought, hopefully, that this might mean he could soon be back, along with his jukebox....my hopes were dashed when I realised the programme was a repeat from 2009. Sad

Article here about Lamarr's stand-up days. Unfortunately I came across it with comments from his colleagues saying his retirement was a sad loss to stand-up and music radio, so it doesn't look like he's coming back any time soon.

Of course I opened this thread with hopes held high that Mark was on his way back on to our radios only to have them cruelly dashed when I read your post,Ian.

Where is he,I wonder and what is he doing?

I heard some of the last show that he did (whether live, or on 'Listen Again' I don't recall now) I do remember him saying something like "I may be gone for some time". I knew that wasn't a good omen. I wonder why they let such a talent go. He could present a show on just about any type of music. He did Shake, Rattle & Roll & Alternative 60s. Didn't he also present one on Reggae as well? He had a good alternative Christmas music show on Christmas day afternoon. And used to fill in for others on their shows, like on Saturday mornings (sometimes with Jo Brand as a sidekick) And I think Mark Radcliffe's, then, late show, in the days before he was paired up with Stuart Maconie (another very knowledgeable presenter, sadly missing from Radio 2)

Not to mention his work with the likes of Bob Harris (and others) at events such as 'South by South West' in Austin Texas!

I think we should send a search party out for him and make him come back to our radios. Wink

He's due to appear at this year's Latitude with God's Eternal Jukebox, so you can try and catch him there!

A great DJ-use to love his show on BBC Radio 2.

Guess Huey Morgan was brought in as his replacement.

No chance Mark L wil be back on Radio 2-the fat controller is clueless-he's only interested in celeb types.

I've heard Mark is "totally out of the game" now, although I think he still writes for Bill Bailey. He attended the funeral of Sean Hughes last week and that was the first time many of his old friends had seen him for a while. He is well, apparently, but just had enough of the whole thing and walked away.

Thanks for the up-date,Ian. Mark is still much missed.

Before Sean Hughes was cold there was a real hatchet job of an article about him in The Guardian from a so called former friend.

It was good to see that Twitter in the guise of many people (who knew him)and others who only knew him from his work, quick to condemn it.

David Baddiel said on Twitter...

Sean Hughes' funeral was nearly as funny, moving, complex and musically-eclectic as the man himself. A great tribute.

Yes, what a terrible piece that was. He basically said "Sean stopped speaking to me years ago and none of his friends will speak to me now so I can only conclude he was a horrible poo"

But there was a big turnout for the funeral so he really was much-loved. One of my friends who was there just sighed and said "What. A. Day" when I asked him about it. Sean's (apparently very large) house is now going to charity.
