If they would move it forward even by just 1 hour it would be better. I guess they could reduce Graham Norton to 2 hours without having to adjust the rest of the schedule.

Putting it back to 8 would be more than perfect for me. Very Happy

Agreed Helen can't help thinking radio2 have missed a trick, TB is probably marmite, personally l'm a fan, and I'm convinced the audience figures would be increased with a later start time, being an early riser I listen to the show live but he is definitely wasted being on that early

A 'heads up' for you. I'm listening to Sounds Of The 70s and early on in the show, Johnnie said that he'll be sitting in on a couple of forthcoming Sounds Of The 60s. I don't think he said when that will be.

He said it was going to be in February. Hurray, some good news at last! Very Happy

Tony has been offered a new contract by Radio 2.

He said...

'I have to try to live as long as my contract now' Surprised Laughing

The Golden Hour and Sounds of the 60s host’s contract will run until 2020

Well let's just hope his powers of memory hold out that long

On yesterday's SOTS he claimed that he'd done shows with Diana Ross and The Supremes in 1972 when everyone knows Diana Ross was doing her own solo material at that date - I recall buying a copy of the single 'Remember Me' for school discos back in 1971 Rolling Eyes

It was his faulty memory that got him into trouble last time!

A tweet from Tiggy Walker‏

I consider myself pretty damn loyal to my husband’s career. So do I set my alarm for 6am tomorrow - on a Saturday- to hear my dear @piratejw do Sounds of The 60’s on @BBCRadio2?! Guess I’d better 😬

I am looking forward to hearing JW on SOTS. I haven't been tuning in as TB gets on my nerves!

I loved SOTS without TB this morning. It was good to hear whole tracks without anyone talking over them and a better mix of music than has become the norm. Very Happy

I missed a chunk from the first hour as I got called away (I was on iPlayer) but I really enjoyed hearing Johnnie play 60s music again.

First track on 2nd hour, Ronettes' 'Baby I Love' you preceded by the twangy 'Johnnie Walker' just one classic Walker moment!

Looking forward to the next one.

Yes I also thought the format and choice of music was better than the TB version

My only worry is that I think Mr Swern will take the opportunity to regain undue influence whilst he thinks he can get away with it - he clearly can't with TB's show

Actually I find the whole situation rather odd because why would TB feel the need to take a two week break from SOTS but yet be available to present 'The Golden Hour' on both weeks ) Confused

It suggests to me that someone somewhere is not happy with the way TB is performing in the Saturday morning slot and might be a sign of changes when the new schedule begins in the next few weeks

Unless of course the Golden Hour is pre recorded. I wouldn't know because I gave up on it a long time ago.

I don't think the show is prerecorded Angela as I'm sure I've heard lots of texts read out which wouldn't happen on a prerecorded show

As I said I smell a large cuddly rodent with the whole situation Shocked

Maybe Tony has some personal Saturday commitments and he doesn't want to have been up since 4 am or working at all on the day! Doing the Golden Hour only gives him a couple of free weekends and or course he could pre record that for 2 weeks. I don't think it would matter it he did.

Here's an interesting thing. The small hours of this morning's repeat of Sounds Of the 60s is dated 10/2/18. Therefore not last Saturday's Johnnie Walker presented show! As they used to say in the 1960 / 70s 'Answers on a postcard'!

Having just listened to last Friday's Golden Hour, he said at the beginning that the show was recorded for the next two weeks, so it wasn't possible to contact him in the usual way. So probably no need for any conspiracy theories - he just fancied a 2-week holiday Smile

Another great show from Johnnie this week.

Classic 'Johnnie Walker jingle then right in Chris Farlowe's Out Of Time.

Maybe he'll do a few more when Tony wants a holiday.

I wish Johnnie Walker could have the show every week, it has been totally different and MUCH better. Ah well, that's me done until TB's next holiday!

I listened to last week's on catch up, while lying on the sofa last week, feeling rough and yukky, so will revisit it later. He played Walk Away Renee, which is guaranteed to bring even Lazarus back from the dead.

I shall record the two shows for posterity. Love Johnnie doing SOTS...and he did last week's with a stiff and painful neck, so had to stand! I'd be as happy as Larry if they gave it to him full time - which they won't. And I don't think he'd enjoy getting up at 4am every Saturday, either. But it's been great to hear him on there. After all, he stood in for Brian a few times.

Thank you for reminding me of those other JW SOTS. I've got recordings of them I think. Off to check!

Me too! Is there *anyone* who enjoys TB's inane so-called 'jokes', his cheesy patter, his constant pleas for emails and texts, ditto his constant thanks for them, his references to a 50-year old mutt ... and most of all the way he wrecks every record by crashing into the beginning and end of them. Aarrgghh Evil or Very Mad

Great playlist on Tony's programme today (well at least as far as I was concerned)

Zoot Money's Big Roll Band ~ Big Time Operator, Aretha Franklin ~ I Say A Little Prayer, Johnny Kidd and The Pirates ~ Hungry For Love,Billy Fury ~ Last Night Was Made for Love, Frank Sinatra & Nancy Sinatra ~ Somethin' Stupid, Gladys Knight & The Pips ~Take Me In Your Arms and Love Me, were just a few that were played.

Could have done without the wittering on about the cold studio though. Wink Smile

Must listen back to last week's Becky!

Am listening to today's on iPlayer to this week's as I'm doing last minute preparations for visiting friends over the next few days! Good tracks so far.

This week, I put SOTS on at 7.55, which meant I could go back to the beginning and effectively listen from 8 till whenever, also skipping the two news bulletins and the waffle with Ricky Wilson. Who's a clever boy, then? You can't beat actually hearing it on a Saturday morning. Just sets you up for the day.

Cracking playlist too, so far.

Only just over 1 hour in and gotta say you're spot on Raver! Opener from 2nd hour Poetry in Motion followed by Forget Him from Bobby Rydell, can't get much better!

H

PS Substitute from the Who is track 3, so they keep on coming!

Another cracker today. This track interested me, among all the little gems played. Not sure I'd heard it before...only by Elvis. Loved it.

Matthews Southern Comfort - I've Lost You (strangely, not on the playlist)

Chalk and cheese...

Missed that one Raver I'll try and catch it before it's too late!

Just been listening to the latest (11th Aug) edition and it too is a fabulous one. Lots of my favourites bringing back a lot of memories.

H

PS I had a look at Friday's Golden Hour (we were away so missed it) playlist and that was a good one as well.

I just caught up with last Saturday's show. God, I miss Brian Matthew! This isn't SOTS, it's a breakfast show that plays 60s music although it's not as esoteric as it used to be. Enough with the texts and emails, kill the pointless jibber jabber with DOL and could we have a week without being told the same thing week in week out

I agree with you, we gave up listening to the Tony Blackburn show weeks ago.
It isn't SOTS, at least not as we know it!

I have to say, I was quite alarmed at the amount of times TB repeated himself this week. Even more than usual. That said. getting up around 4am isn't conducive to coherent thoughts for two hours, I'd have thought. But yes, the 'jibber jabber' does wear out it's welcome, after a while, bless him. He's a cheery soul, though, so it doesn't bother me. Yes, Johnnie Walker was a refreshing change when he stood (literally) in a while back, but apart from those two, I can't think of anyone suited to it. The old DJ's won't be around forever, so I'm happy to enjoy them while they are. You've seen and heard for yourself, the sort of presenters that R2 are going to employ for future torture, who make Tony's witterings sound as profound as a Martin Luther King speech.

Well said Raver but like you both I did pick up on the repeated phrases. Maybe Tony is due a holiday break?

I really do think we have to enjoy the real DJs who are left as long as we can.

I thought he'd had a little break not long ago, H. I could be wrong. Either way, I'm sure that once the weather gets cooler, he'll be off to sunny climes for a longer one., which will hopefully rejuvenate the old fella. He's clearly a workaholic.

Just a thought. Let Gambo do SOTS and Tony go back to POTP. Gambo is a music broadcaster, as Brian was, and is wasted on POTP. I'm quite happy for it to be pre-recorded because I don't care about someone driving to Cornwall

While I'm banging on am I the only one who thinks the tracks played have gone from one extreme to the other. Brian ended up getting very esoteric but Tony seems to be very conventional. No album tracks, no B sides, no prog.

Trouble with all this is that a feel like a right B'Stard for criticising Tony. It's like kicking a puppy
